She stepped on her husband's foot. Not that it would likely do much good, considering she wasn't heavy enough to make it actually hurt. But that was about the only response he would get out of her. When Al ushered them off towards a corner of the garden, Renny's curiosity peaked and she found herself smiling at the woman that her brother introduced as the Grand Duchess. She dipped the woman a quick curtsy before settling on the ground next to her brother. "Aww," she said softly. "She's so adorable," her attention turned to the other woman when she said the puppy really seemed to like her brother and she beamed. "I don't think there's an animal alive that doesn't like my brother," she said with a soft laugh. Her gaze drifted back to the puppy and she desperately wanted to reach out and pet the little head, but she also didn't want to risk waking the poor thing up. Instead she turned her attention to the woman that Alasdair had introduced as the Grand Duchess with a slight frown. "I don't mean this rudely or anything, but what is the Grand Duchess doing at a march? Especially one as little as Sunil."

Al smiled when the introductions seemed to go relatively well. His attention was focused mostly on the little puppy that was curled up in the wooden crate. However when his sister began talking about how cute the puppy was he laughed and glanced over to her husband. "Careful. Next thing you know she'll be asking you for a puppy," he said in a joking manner. When Renny said she didn't think there was an animal alive that didn't like him he merely shrugged. "At least not one that we've met," he said with a chuckle and shake of his head. However when the conversation turned to what the Grand Duchess was doing here he cringed inwardly. Of course this subject was going to come up. "She's here because the Clergy thinks that I need a baby sitter," he said in a strained tone. It was obvious that he was trying not to let the irritation and anger that he felt seep into his tone. He knew it wasn't Treise's fault, but it still irritated him anyway. He shook his head, however, when the puppy started to wake up. Almost immediately his expression softened and he reached out to pet her gently on the head. He was rewarded with multiple licks to his fingers again.

When his wife settled down beside the crate he would grin, taking a step or two closer but not wanting to crowd them or the pup. He would smile softly as they spoke about animals liking the Marquess, though his gaze would flick between Ranait and the crate, the wheels in his head turning. When her brother spoke to him he would laugh softly, "She doesn't have to ask me for anything. If she wants a pup then she can get one," he would say with a shrug, truly meaning it. But he figured that his wife knew that anyways, he said it more for the brother's sake than her's; he knew that if he had a little sister that he would be concerned for her well being, and he would wonder if she was getting what she wanted.
When Renny questioned the Grand Duchess he would blink, turning his attention to the woman only to have Alasdair answer. He would purse his lips for a moment, trying to figure out if this was amusing to him. It served the man right, but he knew that having a babysitter wasn't the best thing in the world. And he was supposed to be trying to get along with the man, so no. It wasn't amusing. That didn't mean he couldn't make some sort of joke, though, and would cast a devilish glance towards his wife, "Well at least your babysitter is pretty," he would say with a grin, though he didn't take his gaze off of his wife; eager to see her reaction.

Upon hearing Ranait's response about her brother and animals she would grin, chuckling softly when Alasdair commented on it as well, "I don't doubt that," she would say, letting her gaze drift down to the pup once again. She found herself calming a bit, figuring that his sister wouldn't question her presence... that was, until she actually did. She would sigh softly, letting her gaze flick to the Duchess as she tries to think of some excuse other than her being a babysitter, though she wasn't given much time as the man just went ahead and said it. She would shake her head slightly and glance towards him, having noticed the anger in his tone and felt almost like it was directed at her. She couldn't really blame him though; who didn't resent their babysitter? After a moment she would stand and dust off her kilt before smiling to the group, despite the fact that she suddenly felt intrusive, "Well. I'm going to go attend to some business of my own," she would say, dipping them a curtsey before moving out of the garden. It was better to leave them alone anyways; they had some family business to take care of and she was in no way apart of their family. Like Alasdair had said, she was a babysitter. She shouldn't be acting as a friend or anything like that.

She smiled innocently when Alpin said that she could have a puppy if she wanted one. She wasn't sure about wanting one, even if they were adorable, just yet. She'd rather wait until they had moved everything to Carnaghan and gotten settled in. Honestly, the palace was no place for a puppy. A frown tugged at her lips at Al's response to what the Grand Duchess was doing here, but then mischief sparked in her eyes. "Well, then. It's about time there was a woman around to put Al in his place," she teased. However when Alpin commented on her being pretty she would shoot him a glare. She saw, however, that he was apparently just trying to get a reaction from her, so she decided to otherwise ignore him. When Treise got up from the ground and said she had things to attend to she would frown and stand up as well. "You know you don't have to leave," she muttered to the other woman. "I'm sure Al's not upset with you over this whole thing. I mean, it's not like you chose to "baby sit" him," she said gently. "And if we didn't want you around, we wouldn't have come over to where you were sitting," she tried to assure the woman.

When Alpin and Renny both teased him over the Grand Duchess he shook his head, though a slight red tint covered his cheeks. He coughed and tried to cover it up, but wasn't sure if he was successful or not. However, a grin did tug at his lips when Ranait glared at the Duke. It was funny to see his sister jealous of anyone, quite honestly. Renny was normally so care-free that to see the jealousy flash across his sister's face told him just how in love with Alpin Mahon she was. He shook his head and plucked the puppy from the crate to tuck her against his chest when she woke up. He used the other hand to pet her head gently, and when Treise attempted to excuse herself he frowned until Renny intervened. He stood up as well. "She's right, you know," he mumbled. "You don't have to leave, and I'm not upset with you. As you said; this isn't your choice," he said with a shrug as he bent over to place the puppy on the ground and let her romp about for a little while. A chuckle rumbled from his chest when she immediately attacked his hand. Once again he was trying to suppress a wince while her little needle-like teeth sunk into his fingers.

When Ranait stopped her she would grimace slightly, turning to look at the woman for a moment. If only she’d been here for her arrival, “You’re right, I don’t have to,” she would say, letting her gaze flick to Alasdair for a moment, “But I would rather go attend to my business,” she would finish, looking back towards the Duchess. “I don’t think it matters whether I chose to do it or not,” she would say, her brows raising slightly, though when the woman said that if she wasn’t wanted then they wouldn’t have come over to her she would laugh, “You came over to see the pup,” she would point out, “My being here had nothing to do with it,” she would say with a shake of her head. Upon hearing the Marquess mumble about how his sister was right she would chuckle and shake her head, marveling at how enthusiastic he sounded, “Either way, you have family affairs to attend to, and I need to get my things situated anyways,” she would say, still feeling rather intrusive. “I will see you around,” she would say with a smile, leaning down to gently scratch the pup behind the ears before resuming her walk out of the gardens. She truly hadn’t meant to make such a big deal about her departure, and was now feeling rather uncomfortable.

She frowned at the woman's insistence, but gave a slight nod. "Alright," she said. "I didn't mean to bother you, I just didn't want you to feel unwelcome," she said, trying to be reassuring again. She shrugged and turned her attention back towards her brother when the other woman continued on her way. A giggle escaped her as she saw the pained expression on her brother's face when the puppy's teeth sank into his fingers. "You know you don't hide that very well," she said, teasing him. She wandered back over to her husband and stood on her tip toes to press a quick kiss to his cheek and then knelt on the ground in front of her brother and the little puppy. She gave a soft whistle and the puppy's attention immediately left her brother and focused on her. The little ball of fluff wheeled around and darted the short distance over to the hand that Ranait had outstretched for it and she bit her lip when the puppy's teeth sank into her fingers. "Ouch, you little bugger," she said, with a laugh. She carefully knocked the puppy over onto its back and rubbed her hand quickly over its stomach, grring softly at it. A giggle escaped her as a playful growl came from the puppy. It was just too darn cute not to giggle. Her attention flicked back to her husband and she flashed him a smile. "Okay. So maybe we do need a puppy once we get to Carnaghan," she said with a grin.

He, too, had frowned at Treise's insistence that she would rather be elsewhere doing her own thing. 'cause that wasn't in the least bit rude or derogatory. Apparently they weren't good enough to keep a Grand Duchess company, he thought with an eye roll. However he shook his head and turned his attention back to the puppy when Renny knelt down in front of him. A smile claimed his lips when she called the puppy and his fingers were released from the torment of tiny needle teeth. Her comment about him not being as good at hiding the pain as he thought he was landed on deaf ears. However, he couldn't help but laugh when her hand got attacked by the puppy and she got to feel his pain. "And now you know how it feels and why it's not easy to hide," he teased gently. "Her little teeth are like a bunch of needles," he said with a grimace. When her attention turned back to her husband and she said something about a puppy once they got to Carnaghan he would cant his head. "I heard that you were staying at court for now at least. What made you decide on that," the question was more directed at his sister than Alpin. That; however, was mostly because he wasn't sure he was actually comfortable enough with his brother-in-law to talk to him.

Alpin remained quiet as they spoke with the Grand Duchess, knowing where she was coming from. As one of the more favored Dukes within the clergy he had to babysit a few of the lower nobles in the past, and the feeling that he was being intrusive, and that he wasn’t welcome never went away while he was on an assignment like that. When the woman left and his wife came over to him he would smile, gently kissing her back and starting to wrap his arms around her only to have her sink to the ground to play with the puppy. He would move to sit cross-legged beside her, occasionally reaching out to wiggle his fingers at the pup. Upon hearing her say that they needed a pup once they got to Carnaghan he would laugh, “That’s fine with me,” he would assure her, reaching out to ruffle the pup’s ears only to get his fingers nipped as the pup tried to play. He would merely laugh at it though and would thrum his fingers playfully against her nose before pulling his hand away. Upon hearing Alasdair’s question he would glance towards the man, though he figured that it was more directed at Ranait than him, and would let her answer. It wasn’t quite his decision to stay at court anyways; he’d left it up to her.

She smiled when Alpin moved to settle next to her and she settled her unoccupied hand on his leg, just above his knee. Her fingers continued to wiggle as the puppy ran around between the three of them and took turns nipping at everyone's fingers. A smile played at her lips as she watched the puppy play, but her attention turned to her husband when he said it was fine with him if they got a puppy. "Good. I was concocting a plan to get Davan's help if you told me no," she said, teasing him. When Alasdair spoke up she turned her attention to her brother and kind of lifted her shoulders in a shrug. "I wasn't ready to leave the queen behind just yet," she admitted a bit sheepishly. "When dad sent me away to court, Moira became the only friend that I had. So Alpin said that we could stay at court for a while, at least until I got pregnant. But, after the events of the last few days, I'm thinking it might be time to go ahead and leave for Carnaghan soon," she admitted with a shrug. "Besides that, I think it's time we got settled in somewhere as a family and I got to know Davan," she said with a smile directed at her husband. She leaned over to kiss his cheek again and her expression definitely had love etched all over it.

He shook his head as he watched the way his sister and the Duke interacted. It was obvious, even from an outsider's perspective, that the two of them were in love. At some point the puppy had stopped running around between the three of them and had flopped against his hand, a yawn parting her tiny muzzle. He chuckled and scooped the puppy up with one hand to tuck her against his chest for warmth and comfort. When his sister began to explain the decision his attention would turn to her and he'd nod as he absently stroked behind one of the puppy's ears with his forefinger. "I can understand being reluctant to leave behind your only friend," he said sympathetically. However when she mentioned the events of the last few days his head titled to the side. "The events of the last few days," he said questioningly. It wasn't so much that he was trying to pry, but something about the way that she'd said that made him think that something had happened to threaten her safety. And he didn't like it when things threatened the safety of his little sister. "If someone did something to you, Renny, or tried to," he said, letting his voice trail off with the threat.

He couldn’t help but laugh when she said that she was concocting a plan to get Davan’s help if he’d told her no, “That’s not fair. You can’t use her against me,” he would say, shaking his head. When she mentioned that it might be a good idea to go to Carnaghan soon he would blink, his brows furrowing slightly as he watches her, wondering if she truly meant it. He was about to ask if she was sure when her brother spoke up, asking what had happened in the last few days and such. He would laugh at the man and shake his head, “Slow down, tiger,” he would say, rolling his eyes, “If the King ever comes back to life, I’m the first man in line to send him back to hell,” he would say, his tone dead serious. He didn’t quite realize that the man wouldn’t know that the King had been killed, or how or why he would have been killed until after he’d already said that. “The King was…not being very nice to Ranait and one of her Knight friends stepped in to help. Well, one thing turned into another and they ended up dueling,” he would say with a shrug. “The King should have known not to challenge or accept a challenge from such a formidable knight,” he would suggest, shaking his head.

She flashed Alpin a grin. "Of course I can. I have to be the good guy in this," she teased. Her attention flicked back to her brother when he asked what had happened. She was about to respond to him when Alpin started to explain things. "What he failed to mention is that this all went down while he was away from court," she added onto his words. A sigh drifted from her lips and she began to chew on the lower one. "I can't help but realize that I got really lucky that Esras and his uncle happened to be in the same place at the same time," she said on a sigh as she closed her eyes for a moment before blinking them back open to look at her brother. "Of course, Esras and I aren't on the best of terms now that he knows I'm married. And, I mean, the chances of something like that happening now that the king is gone are relatively slim, but," she paused as she scooted closer to her husband's side and wrapped her arms around his waist. "I think I would feel better being away from court and finally settling in somewhere that I can call home. I'll miss Moira, but other than that..There's not much to miss about it," she said with a shrug. "Besides, it's not like I won't be able to visit from time to time. The queen pretty much told me I didn't have a choice," she said with a soft giggle.

Al arched a brow at the first of the Duke's words, and as the man's explanation continued his face mottled with anger. It took a moment or so for him to be able to calm himself down, and by the time he had Ranait was adding on to what Alpin had to say. He shook his head and rubbed one hand over his face, the other still clutching the puppy to his chest. "That bastard," he growled, shaking his head again. "I knew that man was a piece of shit the first day that I met him. I never should have let dad send you off to court without guards," he said on a sigh to his sister. "But he didn't think anything of it because the king was known to avoid virgins," he said and then he found that he was upset with himself. "Shit. I should have sent men to protect you, Renny. If I had known," he said, letting his voice trail off. But then he shook his head again. He knew that even if he'd had men at the palace to guard her she likely would have given them the slip at some point or another. So the chances that things would have ended up differently were slim to none. "I'm glad things didn't end as badly as they could have."
