She had been “asked” to do a huge favor for the Clergy and Queen Moira, though she didn’t really have a choice in the matter. It was absolutely ridiculous. She wasn’t a damn babysitter, and she wasn’t a damn teacher either; she was a Grand Duchess. She was a bit irritated by all of this, to say the least. But, she felt that Queen Moira was a good friend of hers, and having the Clergy on her side could only be a plus, so she was doing this. She’d tried to put it off for as long as she could since receiving news that she would be going to Sunil to help with the Marquess O’Halloran, but she just couldn’t put it off for any longer. It had already been a couple of days, and if she waited any longer she was sure that she would disappoint people, so here she was. Riding into Sunil on the back of her stallion, Fathach, which a cluster of her own people following behind her. If she was going to be staying at Sunil for a while she was sure as hell going to have her own people there to help her.
When she reached the stables she just barely allowed her mount to halt before she was swinging down from the saddle and glancing around, her eyes dancing from the barn to the palace and back again. She had expected the Marquess to greet her upon arrival, but she wasn’t sure if he would. She’d heard some outrageous stories about his lack of respect and control, and she truly doubted that he would view this meeting as important. She believed that she truly had her work cut out for her, and it only made her more irritated.

Al had spent the last several days stewing in silence in Sunil. He didn't much care for the place, but he didn't really have a choice in the matter either. How could he have been so stupid as to have accused the duke of what he had? Simple. He hadn't been thinking. But, then, the man had attacked him, and it had sent him spinning into a realm of pissed off that he'd never experienced before. Honestly, after the guards had escorted him to Sunil he'd found himself flying into panic mode. If the duke had attacked him like that, he was terrified of what the man might be doing to his baby sister. Sure he might not care if the man put her in her place the way that she needed to be, but to have him beat her? Al wouldn't be able to live with himself if he found out that his baby sister was being beaten by a man that he had forced her into marrying.
He'd gotten word from his men that there were people approaching the estate. Great. Fucking perfect. This was probably that grand duchess that had been sent her to "teach him a lesson" or whatever the fuck it was that she'd been sent here for. He'd growled and groaned about it, but had also forced himself onto the front steps of the estate. He might be rude, but he wasn't stupid enough not to greet the woman in person. He stood on the steps, though, waiting as he watched her dismount her horse. He could greet her just as easily from where he stood as he could from where she stood. And he was entirely too stubborn to make the trek across the way. Besides, it wasn't like she was here as a guest or something.

When she didn’t see him around the barn anywhere her jaw would clench in anger, and she would shove the reins towards the nearest stable boy before whirling around towards the palace. She couldn’t believe that he hadn’t been bothered to come down here and greet her, like he had something better to do. Her hands were clenched into fists as she walked, obviously more than a little upset with the Marquess. She would storm up the steps, not even noticing the man until she was standing inches in front of him at the top. She would glare at him for a moment, her hands shifting to her hips as she looks him in the eyes for a long moment. “Marquess,” she would utter, her green eyes flashing with annoyance. She definitely wasn’t the traditional lady; standing here staring down a Marquess wearing a kilt and long sleeved shirt with a vest slung over it of all things. Her mother was definitely rolling in her grave at the moment. Not only was she practically throwing a fit over the whole thing but she was doing so wearing men’s clothing, and using the title that her mother had once owned. If she wasn’t so irritated about everything she would probably be laughing about it right now.

He watched as she shoved her horse at one of the stable boys and then stormed up towards the estate. The expression on her face was one of pure frustration, and for whatever reason a smirk tugged at the corners of his lips. Probably because he lived to irritate people and got the distinct impression that he was the source of the frustration that was currently etched across her face. "Duchess," he said in his best "sweet" tone as he swept her a mocking bow. He turned and pulled open the front door of the palace, sweeping his hand inward as if inviting her inside. He really wanted to shove her in there and slam the door in her face, but he knew better than to be that rude. Of course; in his opinion, it would serve her right for meddling in affairs that had nothing to do with her. Being exiled to Sunil for an undetermined amount of time was one thing. Sending someone to baby-sit him was quite another. So, yeah, he was kinda pissed off with this whole situation himself. His tone changed, however, when he realized that she might be able to give him news of his sister. The thought that she might be in a bad situation was one that was still bothering him. "Do you, by chance, have word of my sister," he asked her in a much less mocking tone.

She would narrow her eyes at him when he called her Duchess, “Grand. Duchess,” she would correct him, ignoring the sickly sweet tone to his voice. When he bowed to her she would roll her eyes, otherwise ignoring that as well. It was a sign of respect, or it was supposed to be, and he didn’t even know her. And she didn’t know him either and obviously didn’t respect him, so she sure as hell wasn’t going to curtsy to him in response. When he swung open the door and swept his arm towards the room she would shake her head slightly before marching inside, her head lifted quite high as she reminded herself that she was supposed to act dignified. Though, when she heard his question she couldn’t help but turn and laugh, the sound rather mocking. “Oh, Alasdair. You really don’t have a clue,” she would say with a chuckle, reaching up to press her fingers to her lips as she looks at him. “Your sister pretty much hates you, if the rumors are true,” she would grin. It wouldn’t usually make her happy to share this news with anybody, but he had annoyed her, and he needed to know the consequences to his actions. “And she is happily married to the Duke of Carnaghan,” she would say with a smirk, hoping that this would be like rubbing salt in a wound; she’d been told what he had accused the Duke of so that he couldn’t marry the Lady in Waiting. “Ranait Mahon. It has a nice ring to it, no?” she would ask with a tilt of her head, pursing her lips as she watches his face for any reactions he might have. A proper Marquess would express happiness for his sister, but she had a feeling that he would be outraged.

He did his best to refrain from rolling his eyes at her "grand duchess" comment, and made no remark about it. When she entered the palace he entered behind her, even though he really wanted to slam the door on her now. He bit his tongue when she turned a mocking smile to him, and if he didn't taste blood he was about to. Gods that look pissed him off, and if she'd been a man he probably would have decked her already. "Lady, I don't know if you have any siblings, but let me enlighten you. My sister has hated me since the day she was born, so her hatred for me is nothing new," he said with a snort. "We spent out lives torturing each other and making the other person miserable. It's kind of what siblings do," he said with a shrug. "So you telling me that my sister hates me is not even close to news to me," he informed her. However, when she said that Ranait was happily married to the duke he went cold inside. He hadn't expected the two of them to get married, and now that he knew they were he was filled with dread over what might be happening to his little sister. "But what of the Duke? Does he seem...happy with her," he questioned in an uncharacteristically soft tone. Basically it was his way of asking if there was any sign that the man might be abusing his sister without asking that question out right.

She would raise her brows at him when he informed her of what siblings did to each other, “No, that’s what brats do to each other, Marquess. Proper siblings who love each other look out for one another and don’t torture them. And yes, I do have a sibling. A younger sister,” she would say, rolling her eyes. It seemed that she was wrong about him being angry over his sister’s situation, and actually felt a little less annoyed with him. When he asked about the Duke in this overly pathetic tone she would roll her eyes turning away from the man to look around the place, “The Duke is madly in love, or so they say. He had a diamond ring crafted for her. It’s more costly than your entire estate,” she would inform him, “It’s been said that he’s even leaving his home to stay at court with her to make her happy. Foolish man,” she would say with a shake of her head. A Duke like him should be seeing to his estate, not dilly dallying around at court every day. He was bound to go into debt or get himself into some sort of trouble while staying there. Not that she didn’t see the romance and love behind his gesture; she just thought that he should have made a more responsible decision. And the Duchess Ranait shouldn’t have let him stay at court with her; it was an extremely selfish thing to do. She would shrug slightly and walk a few steps into the Marquess’ home, clenching her jaw slightly as she tried to figure out what exactly she was going to do with the man.

He snorted at her comment about brats and having a younger sister. "No, lady. It's what brothers do," he said as he rolled his eyes. When she spoke of the Duke's apparent affection for his sister relief flooded through him and he couldn't help but smile at the things that the man had done for his sister. He might not personally care for the Duke, but somewhere deep down he loved his baby sister and always would. Even if he would rather her be miserable the majority of the time. He was starting to realize that the only reason he'd ever wanted her to be miserable was because..well..misery loves company. And he certainly wasn't happy in life. And it wasn't because of a lack of an extravagant title or a lack of riches. No. What made him miserable was that he had no one to share his life with. Everyone at Sunil saw him as the spoiled rotten brat that he'd acted like when he was a child, and no one had ever taken the time to actually get to know him as a man. A sigh drifted from his lips and he shook his head at her comment on the duke being foolish. "Smart man, actually," he said with a shake of his head. "Keeping those around you, especially your loved ones, happy is more important than anything else in life," he muttered as he walked past the "grand" duchess and into the dining hall of the estate. His stomach gave a low growl at the smell of food cooking in the kitchen adjacent to the room. However, the table held bread and cheese along with a few different choices of drink. He grabbed a piece of bread and a hunk of cheese before he settled at the high seat of the table and picked up a goblet of mead.

Treise would smile sweetly at him when he mentioned brothers, "Oh, I'm sorry. I knew you had siblings but I wasn't aware that you were a brother," she would say, her voice even more sarcastic than the smile. Despite her annoyance with him she did notice that he seemed relieved by the idea of the Duke liking his sister, though she wasn't sure if it was because he wanted to make the Duke happy in some selfish ploy to better his standing, or if because some part of him actually wished to see her happy. Either way, he'd given a good response to the question and she shouldn't really worry about the reasoning behind it. But she did, because that was Treise for you.
Upon hearing his retort to her comment she would roll her eyes, "And will she be happy when she finally goes to Carnaghan and everything has fallen to pieces? She'll be lucky if he'll be able to put food in her mouth by the end of their stay at court," she would say, overexaggerating a bit. She didn't quite realize what had made him say such a thing, though. She'd never been lonely, and she certainly had never craved a companion; she had her sister and several other individuals that suited her just fine...she has a way of warming up to almost anybody when she's in the mood to. She would let the idea of the Duke's stupidity drop when the Marquess marched off into what appeared to be a dining room without saying a single word to her. She would snort and shake her head before following after the man, "You know, THIS is why I have to be here," she would say, her tone filled with accusation, "If you just knew how to be courteous and think before acting, you wouldn't do half bad as a Marquess."

He'd ignored her jab at his manhood. He was used to his sister going for that when they fought, so it didn't bother him. Unlike some men he was perfectly secure in that area. Also, he wasn't overly interested in her sarcastic tone of voice. It kind of irritated him, given that he was trying to behave. However, he'd shaken his head at her dramatics and even laughed. "You obviously don't know anything about my sister if you think for one second that Carnaghan is going to fall into pieces; with or without the Duke there. I don't know anything about the man to say if he's adept as a Duke, but Renny was practically the matriarch of this place until dad sent her off to court. She's a smart little cookie, and I wouldn't be surprised if she's corresponding with the people at Carnaghan on a regular basis herself," he'd said with a shrug. "Not to mention the fact that I know Renny's smart and crafty enough to be able to put food in her own mouth; money or no. I think you just like a flair for dramatics," he'd muttered that last part so softly she would have had to strain really hard to hear it.
When she stormed into the dining hall after him and accused him of being rude he rolled his eyes and shrugged. "Lady. I have no interest in you, and I honestly don't give a damn about what anyone else thinks of me anymore. Let them hate me. They always will; no matter the way I treat them, because of how I was as a child if no other reason. I've also got no interest in going back to court. Much prefer life here at Sunil. Though it would be nice to travel a bit beyond my own boarders. But it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make not to have to deal with the likes of you as far as nobles go," he muttered the last part again. "Pull up a chair if it pleases you, but I'm hungry and will eat. You can stand there and glare at me all you like, but it's not going to change the fact that I'm going to feed myself. And, before you even think about it, I will bite you if you try to snatch my food from my hands," he said as he flashed her a grin and then turned to his food. He actually ate with pretty impeccable manners; probably not something that might be expected of someone with his behavior.

Her brows would raise slightly when he spoke about his sister, "Sure. She was great being the matriarch of a march, but I can assure you that a duchy is a lot different. And what makes you think that she has any interest in Carnaghan if she's so adamant about staying at court?" she would ask, "And I never said that she wouldn't be fed, I said that he wouldn't be able to feed her. Surely she'll be able to stay with the Queen for as long as she likes," she would say with a shrug. She didn't necessarily believe everything she'd been saying, but it was definitely interesting to see his responses; she was curious as to whether the word on his behavior was actually true.
When she heard his response to her she couldn't help but scoff, "Let's get a few things straight," she would say, moving to take a seat. "I couldn't give a flying rat's ass if you were interested in me, and I'll be honest here and let you know that the only reason why I'm showing any interest in you, is because I was asked so very kindly by the Clergy," she would say, a grimace flickering over her face for a moment. "And I never said that you wanted to go to court. You know why I'm here? Because the Clergy nor the Crown likes to strip titles without first giving chances," she would say, growing rather serious. "And you really have no idea what you're talking about. You have no idea what kind of nobles are out there, and I'm actually probably the nicest you'll meet. Any other Duke who had to listen to your insolence would have your tongue carved out," she would inform him, though her tone lacked cruelty; it was merely informative. "Also, it's not because you were an annoying brat as a child that people dislike you, it's because you're an annoying brat as a man. You know the first thing you did as a Marquess? You falsely accused a man of rape. Now think for a minute about why they don't like you."
She would blink upon hearing him say that he would bite her if she tried to take food out of his hands, "Who the hell do you think I am? I'm not here to play games with you, O'Halloran, and I'm not so ridiculously...petty as to do something like that."

He shook his head at her comment about a duchy being a lot different from a march. "It might be different, but Ranait would still be able to handle things efficiently. I happen to know her better than you do. And while you may not trust my judgement of my sister, I'm not about to listen to you talk shit about her. She's probably the only one at that court with half a fucking brain. Hell, she's smarter than I am, as much as it pains me to admit that," he said on a snort. "And I find it funny that your view of a man in love is so negative that you think a man whose 36 years old and has been a Duke his whole life is stupid enough to let his estate go to ruins while he is away. I've been a Marquess for mere days, and I'm able to make arrangements for Sunil to be properly managed upon the happenstance that I am made unavailable, even for an extended period of time. It's why we nobles have what we call a second. Mine might hate me, but Sunil is his home as much as mine and it would do him no good to see it fall to ruins."
When she scoffed and went on to attack him he would merely listen in silence as he ate his food. When she was finally finished he would arch a brow at her and shake his head. "First of all; they'd have to catch me to have my tongue. I rather prefer that thing to stay attached, and while they might catch me eventually I'd put up a hell of a chase," he said with a shrug. "Second of all, yes, I might have falsely accused a man of rape, but I'll be the first one to admit to acting without thinking from time to time. I'm human. We all make mistakes. And I reacted, believe it or not, out of a fear for my sister. Walking in on the Duke and my sister in a very intimate position on a couch while he was kissing her wasn't exactly conducive to logical thinking," he said with a shrug. "Ranait may think I'm a bastard, and maybe I am, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that I am her brother and she still has this picture in her head of the boy that I used to be. I'll admit that I'm probably not much better as a man, especially when it comes to being her brother, but not much can be done about that. I know how I'm supposed to act, and believe me I regret that I acted against logic, but what's done cannot be undone. Alpin Mahon made it clear upon our first meeting that there would never be any sort of even civil behavior between the two of us," he said with a shrug. "And he made that clear by busting my nose rather than trying to diffuse the situation," he said with a laugh. "Though I do have to give the man some credit. I likely would have responded in the same way if the roles had been reversed," he admitted with a shrug.
"Judge me as you will, Lady Grand Duchess, but I'm too tired to fight against it anymore. Give the title of Marquess to one of my brothers or to some other Lord who is more deserving of it than I, if that's what pleases you and the clergy. I'll find my lot in life as a farmer or fisherman if need be. Just don't sit across from me at what is still my table for the time being and tell me that I'm a worthless piece of shit. I get enough of that from everyone else in the world, to include myself...I don't need to hear it from someone who doesn't know jack shit about me," he grumbled as he picked up his mug of mead and drank deeply. "And to respond to your who the hell do I think you are? You're obviously the Grand Duchess that has no interest in being here and things she can snark me into being less abrasive to other people, when the fact of the matter is that she's being just as abrasive at the moment. And yes, you do strike me as the person who would yank a man's food from his hands just to spite him when he's obviously got no interest in what you have to say. I've heard it all. Including the threat of being stripped of my titles. If it happens then there's nothing I can, or could, do about it. Life goes on, m'lady. Whether we want it to or not."

She really couldn't help but smile. She tried not to; the man was sitting her pretty much being an asshole to her, but he was doing so with so much tact it was unbelievable, and he obviously cared for his sister no matter what he may have done. "I don't mistrust anybody's judgement of her, and you're right I don't know her. But I'm going to make my own judgement based on what she's actually done, not on the potential that she has to do something, and the Clergy themselves won't change that," she would say with a shrug, her tone less harsh than it had been. When he told her that he found her view on a man in love funny she couldn't help but laugh, "Duke or farmer, every man in love does crazy shit," she would say with a shrug, "I have no doubt that Carnaghan makes a great Duke," she would say, only to shake her head slightly at his second comment. "And what is the second supposed to do when their noble spends a fortune at court?" she would ask with a tip of her head, now quite curious as to what might come out of his mouth next.
She would remain silent as he spoke about his sister and Alpin Mahon, her lips twitching up ever so slightly from time to time, though after he said that there was no way to change his sister's image of him she would frown; the man still had quite a lot to learn. "You're right. She won't change her view on you unless you do something that would change it. If, say, you went and apologized to her for acting so irrationally that might begin to change. I'm not saying that you have to, I'm just giving you an option that may start helping. But, again, I don't know your sister so I have no idea how she would react," she would say with a shrug, pretty much ignoring the rest. He could have tried to talk and diffuse the situation, but he hadn't.
"I'm not telling you that you're a worthless piece of shit, I'm telling you that from what I've seen so far you're a very annoying brat. If you were worthless I wouldn't still be sitting here listening to you berate me," she would say, shrugging. "Oh, I don't think I can snark you into being less abrasive, and I'm quite aware of the fact that I'm being an asshole. You would be to if you'd rather be at home with your sister than sent on a mission to practically babysit," she would laugh, though the sound was harsh and unamused. "I'll have you know, that I've never taken a man's food from him... whether he's ignoring me or not, and I'm not about to start. That is rude and distasteful and such a... lady of the court thing to do. And I wasn't threatening you, I was informing you about why I'm here. You do have the power to change whether or not your title gets stripped, Marquess. You just have to be willing to keep it."

He shook his head at her remarks about his sister and the Duke. "Who says the man is spending a fortune at court? Honestly. Ranait hates when people spend money on her left and right. She might have accepted some ring or whatever to make him happy, but if he goes off and tries to spend a bunch of money on her, she'll talk with him about it," he said with a shrug. "He's got to have some smarts to have as much money as he does as late in his life as he is," he shrugged again. He had no real interest in the Duke's spending habits. They weren't his business, nor did they affect him directly. They might affect Renny, but he was sure of his sister's capability to take care of herself.
He sighed at her recommendation and ran a hand over his face. "That might be possible if there was any way that I could get her to agree to see me, but the chances of that are slim to none. I would try to write to her, but it's just as easy for her to toss the letters out as it is for her to accept and read them," he said with a shrug. "She's my sister, and I don't like that there is a rift like this between us, but I don't know that there is a way to mend it." He shook his head at her comments about herself. "Funny. Because I haven't done shit to you except to greet you and then come in here to get food. If that's being an annoying brat then your tolerance for anyone must be very little. I'm surprised you haven't been reprimanded for your own hotheadedness. No. I haven't acted like an annoying brat, except to dish back what you've delivered yourself. And if you can't take what you dish, then maybe you're the one that needs lessons in keeping their mouth shut. You're right. I'd be pissed if I was sent somewhere to baby sit someone that I didn't know anything about, and I'd probably react to them the same way if I heard the shit that people say about me about them," he said with a shrug.
"Well, bully for you, Lady," he said in response to her remark about never having taken a man's food from him. "But I can tell you now that I'm not about to take you on your word," he said with a shrug. "You don't trust me. I don't trust you. It's a two way street there, darlin', and I've got no interest in earning your trust when you're just here to pass judgement on someone you know nothing about. Be my guest and stay for as long as they want you to, but I'm not about to cater to your every whim. You have as much freedom with the servants as any visitor, but if you order something that goes against what I need them to do I will make sure they don't do it," he said with a shrug. "Nothing against you, but I actually use my servants to run my estate. Now if you'll excuse me, I have things to do that don't involve sitting around talking to someone who hates me." he said as he pushed back from the table and stood up.

She would laugh and shake her head, "I didn't say he was, I was asking what they were supposed to do in general. If I had been talking about Mahon I would have used his name," she would say with a shrug. The man always seemed to be on the defensive, and she wondered if it was because he was in trouble with the Clergy, or if it was just how he was. He certainly has a sharp tongue, though, and she was almost positive that it wasn't because he was feeling pressured or wronged in some way; she figured he'd been a smart ass for most of his life.
Upon hearing him say that he didn't know if his sister would agree to see him she would frown slightly, suddenly feeling bad for the man, and just a touch of guilt for being so rude. "Well, why don't you talk to Queen Moira about it? Or you could just try to take her by surprise or something. But, I have a feeling that she would want to sort all of this out anyways; you're still her brother as much as she's still your sister," she would comment, shrugging. She wasn't sure as she'd never fought with her sister like this, but her sister was much younger than she was and she'd had to act like her mother more often than she'd had to act like her sister. "It's not what you've done it's how you've done it. You act as if you're so above all of this," she would say, only to purse her lips slightly in thought as he continued on to talk about her own hotheadedness, "As much as I hate to admit it, you're right. And I apologize for not treating you with more courtesy," she would murmur, leaning back against the chair that she was sitting in. "Also, I apologize for judging you so quickly, I suppose that rumors have tainted my bias more than I would like to admit," she would say with a low sigh.
Upon hearing his next little speech she would shake her head, "I'm not here to pass judgement on you. I'm here so that I can inform the Clergy on your nature as a Marquess," she would say, reaching up to drag her fingers through her hair. "And you're right, we don't trust each other. But why should we? We don't even know each other. And you were just as quick to pass judgement on me as I was to you," she'd comment shaking her head. "And I don't need somebody to cater to my every whim, nor do I need your servants. I've brought a couple of my own people, and believe it or not I'm actually quite capable of caring for myself." She would frown slightly when he stood, her brows furrowing just a bit as she moves to rise as well, "I don't hate you, Alasdair. Like we've both said, I don't even know you. But I understand if you don't want to speak with somebody that you don't seem to like. So, please, this your home and you were hungry enough to come in here so I won't harass you any longer," she would say, thinking for a moment before dipping him a low curtsey and moving away from the table and towards the nearest exit. Even she had to admit that she should have handled this situation with more tact, though there wasn't much she could do about it now. She'd already apologized, and she wasn't about to get down on her knees and beg his forgiveness.
