She would walk quickly beside him towards the kitchen, occasionally glancing at the puppy in his arms. She had to admit that she was rather uncomfortable when they reached the kitchens, swarmed by a plethora of women who cooed over the puppy. They irritated her, but she wasn’t sure why; she had acted in almost the same manner. When the cooks finally gave Alasdair some scraps of meat she would immediately move out of the kitchens and back towards the gardens, hardly waiting for his gesture for her to come with him. When they reached the gardens and he sat she would have to refrain from laughing; the sight of him clutching the puppy adorable and attractive at the same time- what woman didn’t like the sight of a man being gentle and coddling a small defenseless animal. She would sit when he gestured for her to, absolutely beaming when he placed the pup in her lap, “Absolutely dying. I was afraid I might keel over,” she would laugh, scooping the puppy up to cuddle her against her chest for a moment, dipping her head to gently kiss between its ears before shifting the pup back down to her lap. She would watch as he fed the pup a scrap of meat, grinning wildly as she noticed him trying not to wince when the pup accidentally got his fingers. After it was done with that scrap she would reach towards the meat, picking out a small piece before offering it to the pup, though she wasn’t nearly as stoic as he had been when the pup accidentally got her fingers. She would hiss softly, shaking her hand and bringing it up so that she could get a look at the tiny puncture wounds in her fingers, laughing softly as tiny droplets of blood welled up in them, “She definitely has some sharp teeth!”

He had seen the discomfort in her when they'd entered the kitchens, so it was no surprise to him that she'd been just as anxious as him to get out of there. When they settled on the ground and he watched her kiss the puppy on the top of the head he couldn't help but grin. However, when she reacted to the way that the puppy's teeth felt on her fingers a deep rumbling laughter echoed from his lips that he just couldn't seem to contain. "Oh gods. Yes, she does have sharp little teeth," he said when he finally managed to contain his laughter. "They're like little needles," he said with a frown. He picked another piece of meet from the pile and this time laid his hand out flat for the puppy to take the meat. Funny that he didn't get bit that time. He shook his head and continued to feed the puppy like that until her little muzzle parted in a yawn and he knew she was full. He watched her crawl out of Treise's lap and back into his where she curled into a little ball and seemed to fall to sleep immediately. "Well. I guess that answers that question," he said with a laugh and a shake of his head.

When he laughed at her she couldn’t help but grin, shaking her head at his agreement that her teeth were sharp, “Jerk,” she would chuckle, teasing him. When he said that they were like little needles she would laugh, “Oh God, do you know how much I hate needles?” she would ask with a laugh; of course he wouldn’t, but that was beside the point. She hated to sew, and thus hated needles, “Can’t we say that they’re like little daggers or something instead?” she would ask, obviously joking. She would grow quiet after that, though, simply watching with a soft smile on her face as Alasdair fed the pup. She would gently stroke her fingers over the pup’s back as she ate, only to withdraw them as she let out a massive yawn before making her way back into the man’s lap, which caused her to shake her head slightly. When he said that it answered that question she would laugh, “What question? Were you wondering if I was a worse person than you were?” she would ask jokingly, “Well, I suppose that answer would be a yes. Puppies never lie,” she would laugh with a shrug, though she would reach out to gently brush her fingers over the pup’s cheek, smiling when it flopped its paw over her hand.

He laughed at her comment about needles. "No, but I can imagine. You don't look like the type of woman who cares for things like sewing," he teased. He didn't mind the fact that she'd called him a jerk; mostly because he'd heard the laughter in her tone when she'd said it. "Ah. They might be a bit more like daggers when she gets bigger, but right now they're like needles," he said with a grin. When the puppy curled up in his lap he dropped a hand to scratch her head absently and chuckled again when Treise said something about being a worse person than he was. "No. I saw the yawn and wondered where she would decide to sleep," he said with a shrug. "I'm sure you're not a worse person than me," he said with a laugh. "It's more likely that she chose my lap over yours because I'm a male," he said with a shrug. "Most of the time animals prefer humans that are of the opposite gender. Not all the time," he admitted with a frown. "Just most of the time." He smiled when she reached over to scratch the puppy's cheek and the pup flopped a paw over her hand. "She's a cute little thing," he said absently.

She would shake her head at his comment about her not seeming like the type of woman who liked things like sewing, “Oh, and how would you know?” she would ask, though her tone was still playful. Honestly, it was probably quite obvious; she was sitting here in a kilt for Christ’s sake, on the ground, and not complaining about the fact that the puppy had made her bleed and that the animal obviously needed a bath. She could only imagine what one of those ladies from the kitchen might do in this situation, and honestly it was quite amusing thinking about it. Upon hearing him say that they might be more like daggers in the future she would grin, enjoying that he was playing along; she hadn’t thought that she would end up having pleasant conversations with him. When he told her that it wasn’t because she was a bad person she would laugh softly, “Well, maybe you’re right,” she would say, her tone still playful, “But I think it’s because you actually are a pretty good person, and she knows it,” she would say with a smile. Upon hearing him say that the puppy was a cute little thing she would smile at him, pleased by the look of happiness on his face. After a moment she would glance back down at the pup, shifting her fingers against its cheek before gently pulling her hand away, “We should find her a blanket and a basket,” she would say with a grin, looking affectionately at the pup before glancing at him again, “What are you going to name her?” she would ask.

He laughed at her question. "I don't mean this offensively, lady, but you just don't look the type," he'd responded. When she said she was sure that it was because he really was a good person he'd lift his shoulders in a shrug. "I guess it's all just a matter of perspective," was all he'd said in response to that comment. At the comment about finding her a blanket and a basket he would nod and carefully scoop the pup up and stand. She barely stirred in her sleeping state and he smiled down at her when Treise asked what he would name her. "I'm not sure, really. I usually believe in waiting to see how they develop and naming them for their personality," he admitted a bit sheepishly. "I know it sounds silly, but that's how my mother always suggested naming animals," he said with a shrug. He got the distinct feeling that this little ball of fluff was going to end up sleeping in his bedchambers with him. More likely than not she'd end up in the bed next to him at some point in time, too. "Actually, I think I have a perfect idea for a bed for her," he said as a smile tugged at his lips. He carefully handed the puppy over to the woman. "If you don't mind holding her," he added.

When he stood she would follow suit, rising to her feet to stand beside him, perhaps a little too close but she was eager to watch the sleeping pup; she was just so cute. When he said that he was going to wait to see what her personality was like she would grin, “I think that’s a wonderful idea, not silly at all,” she would say enthusiastically, reaching out once again to gently pet the pup, “Your mother must be a very smart woman,” she would grin before retracting her hand, letting it drop to her side; as much as she wanted to pet the pup, she didn’t want to wake her up. When he asked her to hold the pup she would gladly accept it, clutching her gently against her chest and absentmindedly rocking, as if it was a baby that needed the soothing motion. “What is it?” she would ask, curious as to what he might have thought of for a bed for the pup, though she wouldn’t press it after that. But, if he moved she would follow him because she figured he would want her to follow with the pup; if their roles were reversed she definitely wouldn’t want to leave the sleeping animal, not even to get a bed for her.

She'd flashed him a smile when they had arrived at the stables and he'd ordered their horses saddled. She'd pressed a kiss to his cheek before they'd mounted up and she'd turned them in the right direction to go to Sunil. The ride wasn't near as long a one as it would have been to Carnaghan, and soon they arrived at the gates of the march. A grin spread across her face when she heard several of the people call out to her upon recognizing her. She waved to several people and when they dismounted she was greeted by one of the girls that she had pretty much grown up with. "Agnes," she greeted the girl with a hug. "Is Alasdair around," she asked the girl. Anges rolled her eyes, but nodded in response and ushered Ranait into the estate, taking enough time to allow the man who had arrived with her to follow. "He seems to have found a puppy somewhere, that brother of yours," Agnes informed her, and she couldn't help but smile. When they arrived behind the estate it was to find her brother handing off a puppy to some woman that Ranait had never seen before. She arched a brow at Agnes who just shook her head. "Al," she called out to her brother with a smile.

He smiled at her compliment to his mother. "I like to think she is," he said with a laugh. When she asked what it was he had in mind he smiled. "The gardeners use little wooden crates that would be the perfect size for her when they collect vegetables. It would even give her a significant amount of room to grow," he admitted with a smile. When she followed him he was thankful that she'd thought about it. They didn't have to go far before he found one that had been left behind and picked it up. "It will need to be cleaned out," he said, holding the wooden crate out for her inspection. "But with a little cleaning and a nice blanket it should work perfectly," he said. His train of thought was interrupted by the call of a familiar female voice and he turned to spot his sister waving to him. "Renny," he shouted back to her with a grin. He turned his attention back to Treise. "Sorry. I didn't expect her to come here at all. I hope you don't mind," he said before he set the crate down. Whether she minded or not he didn't get the chance to find out before he darted across the garden to scoop his little sister up into his arms and spin her around. "Oh gods, Renny. I'm so sorry," he said, pain obvious in his tone as he set her back down on her feet. "I was a complete idiot and a total asshole, but I was so terrified that he'd done something to you," he said, his tone strained. "I wasn't trying to make you mad at me. I was just trying to protect you," he continued to ramble. "I know it probably doesn't seem like it most of the time, but I do actually care about you. And if he had done something to you and I hadn't done everything I could to get you out of that situation I wouldn't have been able to live with myself," he said. It was obvious by his tone that he was still pleading with her for her forgiveness. A sigh drifted from his lips and he turned to Alpin Mahon who he bowed to and then straightened, clearing his throat. "Lord Carnaghan," he said, addressing the man formally. "I owe you an apology as well. I admit that I let my temper get the better of me when I shouldn't have," he said, his tone still formal. He was trying not to twitch, but at the same time he was remembering the man's fist connecting with, and breaking, his nose. Which, by the way, still hurt like a son of a bitch. Especially when he itched at it.

Alpin moved quietly behind his wife throughout the march, a grimace occasionally passing over his face. He was rather uncomfortable, unsure of what would happen when they found her brother. Though, when they reached the gardens and the man noticed his sister he would blink, cringing when the man came rushing over to pick up Renny and swing her around. He would twitch, tempted to move forward and wrap his arms around her; make sure she was fine and that all was well, but he wouldn’t. He knew that it wouldn’t be acceptable, and that the man hadn’t hurt her, but he was still tempted. He would remain silent as the man spoke to Renny, his jaw clenching slightly as he listens to his apologies only to blink as the man turns to him. He would force himself to relax, listening quietly as the man spoke to him. After a moment’s thought he would move to clap the man on his shoulder, “There’s no need to apologize, brother,” he would murmur, his voice coming out a bit gruff, “You’re not the only who let their temper get the better of them,” he would remark with a shrug before gravitating back towards his wife, gently wrapping an arm around her waist.

She felt a little lost when he left the crate with her and ran off to his sister, though she was rather glad that he didn’t have to try to figure out a way to see her. She would gently bite at her bottom lip as she glances down at the crate, towards Alasdair and the small cluster there before looking back again. She would nudge the crate with her foot before sighing softly, shifting to hold the puppy with one hand before moving to pick the crate up with the other; she didn’t have any business sticking around while he worked things out with his sister. She would lug the crate and pup to a far corner of the gardens, where she had seen a well. She would set the sleeping puppy down at her feet before beginning to clean out the crate, remembering that the man had said that it would need to be cleaned out. Once it was clean she would lay it out to let it dry before picking up the pup, cuddling it to her chest as she moves to sit down with her back against the stone of the well, gently letting her fingers sift through the animal’s fur. After a bit she would figure that the crate was as dry as it would get for awhile and would move to take off her vest, laying it out in the crate and putting the puppy inside with it before moving to sit down against the well once again, drawing her knees up to her chest so that she was more comfortable as she watches the sleeping animal, waiting until the sound of voices died down so that she might leave. She would have left before now, but she didn’t want to embarrass the man with her presence; having his sister know that he had a babysitter wouldn’t be the best of ideas.

She couldn't help but giggle when Al scooped her up into his arms and swung her around. When he placed her back on her feet she just shook her head at him and waited for him to finish rambling his apology. "It's okay, Al," she said, trying to assure him. However when he turned his apology to Alpin she glanced back to see her husband twitching. She bit her lip as she watched him clap Alasdair on the shoulder and accept his apology before moving to wrap an arm around her waist. She beamed up at him and stood on her tiptoes to brush a kiss across his cheek and whisper a thank you to him. She lowered herself back to a flat footed stance and turned her attention back to her brother. "So I heard that you found a puppy," she said with a grin. "Please tell me that I get to see the little ball of fluff," she said, a hint of impatience in her tone. She adored animals, especially when they were babies. "Also, please tell me you're going to introduce me to whoever that pretty lady that just walked away was," she added with an arched brow. She turned her attention to her husband again and moved one of her arms to wrap it around his waist in much the way he had done to her, giving him a gentle squeeze of reassurance. Though that reassurance was mostly for her own sake. She could see that he wasn't exactly comfortable being here with her, but the fact was that he was here with her and obviously trying to at least be civil towards her brother for her sake. It made her feel better to see two of the men she held dearest to her heart at least trying for her sake.

He nodded to Alpin's acceptance of his apology and flashed the other man a grin. "I guess that's what happens when you put two men who are protective over the same woman in a room together," he said with a laugh before his attention turned to his sister. "Ah. Yes, actually. She's an adorable little ball of fur," he said in response to her saying that she'd heard he'd found a puppy. He watched the way Alpin slipped an arm around his sister's waist and instinct made him want to knock the man's hand away for the sake of protecting his sister, but he forced himself not to act on that. They were married and if the Duke wanted to put his arm around his sister's waist, he had every right. It was just likely to make Alasdair twitch for a little while until he got used to seeing it. "Of course," he said in response to her added statement about meeting the woman who had just walked off. He turned and ushered his sister and her husband towards the corner of the garden where he saw Treise had settled with the puppy sleeping atop her vest that she'd obviously placed in the crate. He flashed her a smile and crouched down next to the crate. "Lady, this is my sister Ranait and her husband the Duke of Carnaghan. Renny, Duke, this is the Grand Duchess," he said introducing the three of them. He finally settled next to the crate and gestured for his sister and her husband to settle nearby if they so chose.

He would smile upon hearing Renny’s thanks, gently squeezing her in his arm though he would otherwise ignore it. When the man spoke about how he guessed that’s what happened in that sort of situation he would laugh, shifting his gaze to his wife’s face, “I suppose so,” he would agree, moving to gently press a kiss to her forehead. He couldn’t imagine not being protective over her; he was too invested in her well being. When she commented about the puppy and the pretty lady he couldn’t help but laugh, dipping his head so that he could whisper in her ear, “Do I have something to worry about? You eager to meet pretty ladies and all,” he would tease her quietly, low enough so that only she could hear him. When her brother agreed he would follow after him, though he didn’t remove his arm from around his wife, merely moving along beside her. It made him feel a bit better about everything to have her right there next to him, and he was truly trying to be on his best behavior; he didn’t want to slip up and disappoint her or anything, and he knew that the best way to assure that he wouldn’t was to have his attention focused more on her than anything else.

When Alasdair appeared followed by his sister and who she assumed was his sister’s husband she would blink, not having expected for him to bring them over here. Though, when he crouched down next to the crate to look at the puppy she couldn’t help but smile, listening to his introductions, “Hello,” she would say kindly, dipping her head to the two in greeting though she wouldn’t stand, choosing to stay there sitting next to the pup, “I’ve heard a lot about you, and it’s definitely a pleasure to meet you,” she would say, her tone friendly and respectful; much different than it had been when she’d first greeted Alasdair. When the Marquess settled beside the crate she would smile at him before turning her attention to the animal inside, reaching in to gently brush her fingers over the top of her head, “She really seems to like your brother,” she would comment, directing her remark toward Ranait though she wouldn’t look away from the pup. Honestly, she was a bit enamored by the little creature, and would probably argue with the Marquess if he tried to take the pup into his own chamber’s for the night.
