Not much time after they had left the Eastern Kingdom they had returned to the Northern. He felt a little odd, though, as the last time he’d entered the palace grounds it was with the intent to merely visit and meet his betrothed, but this time it was with the intention to take up residency for as long as his wife felt necessary. Regardless of the queer feelings he was happy to be there. When his mount came to a halt he would swing down from the saddle, handing the reins over to a stable boy before moving to help Ranait down as well. As he lifted her down he would press a kiss to her forehead, a smile spread over his lips, though he didn’t say anything. Instead, he would move to help the stable boys get their horses situated, not quite comfortable leaving them in the hands of individuals he didn’t know, or trust.
As soon as he was done he would move from the barn to grin at his wife, “Well, what now?” he would ask her with a tip of his head. He wouldn’t have much to do at court besides spend time with Ranait, and he figured he might as well spend that time making her happy. Which meant he would let her decide what they would end up doing; he had no clue what she did here other than sit in the Queen’s Gardens, which in turn led him to the realization that he, actually, didn’t know all that much about her. He figured he had the rest of his life to learn, but it was definitely a startling realization.

Renny had watched him a little here and there throughout their ride back to the northern kingdom. She had felt bad when she had realized that he hadn't wanted to change her life, but she was asking him to change his. It wasn't so much that she wanted him to change his life for her, but she wasn't ready to leave court yet. And, let's be perfectly honest here, they couldn't exactly go back to living the way that they had before they'd gotten married. Well; they could, but she highly doubted that he would find that idea acceptable. Her living at court while he lived at Carnaghan would make their marriage quite difficult, and even though it wouldn't be easy with him having to go off from time to time, she knew it was better than the other. When they arrived and he pulled her down from her horse she offered him a small smile. "Thank you," she said. "And I don't mean for just helping me down. Thank you for everything that you're doing for me to makes sure I am happy," she said, pressing a kiss to his cheek.
She watched him help the stable boys with the horses and when he returned with the "well, what now" question she wrapped her arms around him in a hug. "Now," she said as she turned, placing her hand on his arm. "I am going to go get something to eat and drink, and you are more than welcome to join," she said with a grin as she started towards the palace. "Afterwards we shall see what the day has in store. It is likely that I will have some things to do for the queen before she returns, but once I am done I should have time to do other things," she said. A frown tugged at the corners of her mouth as she realized that she had no idea what kinds of things married people did together. "Um. I usually spend my free time studying, walking in the garden, or with the queen," she admitted a bit sheepishly. "I don't have a very interesting life unless there's some event or another going on at the palace."

When she thanked him he would merely grin, placing a gentle kiss to her cheek before moving to help out with the horses. It seemed she didn’t realize that it was how a wife was supposed to be treated by her husband. It was how his father had treated his mother, and how if she ever went out into the country, the minor lords would treat their ladies. Even if they hadn’t clicked he still would have treated her with respect because it was what any person deserved…especially one who had technically been forced into marriage. When he returned and she hugged him he would wrap his arms tightly around her, resting his chin on the top of her head as she speaks. “Sounds like a plan, I’m starving,” he’d say jokingly. When she turned and rested her hand on his arm he would chuckle softly, moving to gently grasp her hand so that he could hold it as they walked.
He would listen as she commented about needing to do some things for the Queen, which honestly didn’t make him feel all that great; his wife was now a part of one of the most esteemed duchies in the kingdom and she was waiting upon somebody, it didn’t matter if it was the Queen. He wouldn’t comment though, as he knew that she enjoyed doing it for whatever reason, or else she would have wanted to join him at Carnaghan. He remained quiet until she was finished speaking about her hobbies, which left a smile on his face, “Well, you’re a very interesting person so that makes up for it,” he would laugh softly. “We can do whatever you’d like, though I’m thinking I’ll need to make a trip to Carnaghan tonight or tomorrow. I need to gather some things and make sure the place isn’t going to fall apart while I’m staying here with you.”

She smiled when he held her hand, despite it being a bit odd to her. It wasn't that she didn't want to hold his hand, but it was something that she'd never done before. Anyway. She lead the way into the castle and down the halls to the dining hall where she paused to ask a servant to fetch them some food and drink. While she always felt awkward asking the servants for anything, she'd learned long ago not to step foot into the kitchens. The cooks tended to frown upon any ladies or lords of the court entering their kitchen. She'd even been chased out by one of them brandishing a rolling pin once. That had been really ironic in her opinion, considering that she'd actually gone to fetch something for the queen, not steal tasty morsels for herself. When Alpin said that her being an interesting person made up for her boring life she laughed. "I guess that's a matter of perspective," she said.
When he changed the subject however she couldn't repress the sigh that drifted from her lips. She'd known that it was coming, but she wasn't sure she was ready for him to leave so soon. She also knew; however, that it would be pointless to say anything about it. "I understand," she said with a forced smile. She settled at a small table in the room and when the servants brought the food and drink out that she had requested she suddenly found that she really didn't have much of an appetite. Lifting her cup to her lips she'd taken a small sip of her drink before placing the cup back on the table. "Well," she said, pushing her chair back. "I should get to work on the things that will need to be done before the queen returns. I hope your trip to Carnaghan is swift, that you arrive safely, and that everything you have set up goes smoothly," she said softly. For whatever reason she suddenly felt as though someone had woken her up from a really good dream and now she was having to face reality. And her reality was no where near as good as that dream had been. She walked around the table and dipped a curtsy to him. "Good day to you my lord," she said before the left the room.

When they sat down in a room he would smile at her, leaning forward to place his elbows on the table and clasp his hands together, resting his chin on them as he looks at her. Only to frown as when the servants brought out food and drink she merely took a sip from her cup before standing and saying something about going to do the things she needed to before the Queen got there. He would lean back in his chair, honestly a little appalled as she wished him luck before curtsying and moving to leave the room. He would stare after her, a little flabbergasted. He was trying to piece together what had happened, wondering why she had suddenly grown so formal and then rushed away from him. It didn’t make sense at all, unless she was throwing some sort of fit over him having to leave? Maybe he shouldn’t have mentioned it, or pushed it off for another couple of days. But he’d already been gone for awhile, and he disliked leaving his estate for so long without some sort of direction from him, and he knew that he shouldn’t keep anything from her.
After another moment or two he’d finally get up, staring distastefully down at the food as his stomach had seemed to turn his hunger into a ball of lead. He would shake his head, sighing as he made his way after his wife, trying to figure out what to say to her. When he finally caught up to her though he would force a sort of smile onto his face, catching her around the waist and tugging her against him, “Hey, what was that?” he would ask, his brows furrowing slightly, “You…curtsied at me. Didn’t even give me a kiss goodbye,” he would say, his voice sounding a little hurt.

She had almost made it to the queen's chambers by the time that he caught up with her, and when he caught her around the waist she froze. A soft sigh drifted from her lips when he pulled her back against him and she tilted her head back to look up at him when he spoke. "I'm sorry," she said, immediately feeling guilty when he said that she hadn't even kissed him goodbye. She turned and stood on her tip toes to press a quick kiss to his lips before shifting away from him slightly. "I guess I'm just a little frazzled by all of this," she admitted a bit sheepishly. She wasn't mad at him, but she was a bit stressed out, and she knew she shouldn't be taking it out on him. In her defense, though, at least she hadn't snapped at him or anything.
A sigh drifted from her lips and she knew saying what was really on her mind was pointless, so she refused to open her mouth about it. "I do need to get to work, though," she said with a frown. She didn't want to just leave him hanging again, so she tried to turn him around and usher him back towards the dining hall. Something told her that he hadn't eaten anything before he'd taken off after her. "Go eat. I'll see you when next we have time together," she assured him.

When he felt her freeze in his arms he would frown, his brows furrowing as he heard her sigh, and feeling kind of like a jerk when she apologized, “It’s okay, I wasn’t looking for an apology,” he would say, releasing the woman from his grasp. He wondered instantly if she was annoyed with him, or if she was tired of his presence. She certainly didn’t seem to want him there at the moment. When she kissed him and then said that she was frazzled by all of this he would blink, a frown tugging at the corners of his lips, “I’m sorry…” he would murmur, instantly feeling like an ass, though he wasn’t quite sure why she was frazzled. He was doing just fine with all of it, though he did know it would be different for her. He’d tried his best not to allow her to stress out over it.
When she sighed he would open his mouth to ask what was wrong, only to have her turning him and directing him to go eat. “I’m not hungry, I don’t want to eat,” he would say, though moments before he felt as if he was going to starve. “I want to know what’s eating away at my wife,” he would murmur, his deep voice dropping to a whisper as he looks at her through half-hooded eyes. The best puppy-dog look he could muster at the moment.

She frowned when he said he hadn't been looking for an apology. Honestly, she hadn't known why he had followed her, so she'd just assumed that was what he'd been looking for. "It's not your fault," she said when he apologized. When he said he refused to budge as she'd tried to push him back towards the dining hall she'd given another sigh. "You are too hungry," she said with a frown. "You just said that you were before we entered the palace," she reminded him. However, when he said that he wanted to know what was eating away at her she pressed her lips in a firm line. Damnit. She should have known that was what this was about. She really didn't want to tell him what was bothering her, considering the fact that the only thing that would come out of it was him feeling bad. But she couldn't very well lie to him.
Honestly she felt like tugging at her hair at that point in time. How was she supposed to not lie to him, but not tell him what was bothering her at the same time? With nothing else to do she just shook her head and turned to walk off. "I have things to do," she muttered under her breath. She entered the queen's chambers and saw that someone had replaced the frame that Alpin had broken when he'd attacked her brother with one that looked exactly the same. A relieved sigh escaped her at that and she busied herself collecting some of the queen's dresses that had been left out for one of the ladies-in-waiting or an actual seamstress to mend. The seamstresses tended to be too busy to get any mending of the queen's done very quickly, so she usually ended up doing it herself. She settled onto a chair in the sitting room and adjusted herself and the items in her lap appropriately so that she could set to work.

When she said that he was hungry, and that he’d even said so he would shake his head, “You said that you were hungry too. I can change my mind if I want to,” he would say, frowning. He honestly felt like crap at the moment, like she truly didn’t want him around. And the feeling only worsened when instead of answering him she turned around and walked into the Queen’s chambers, saying that she had work to do. He would stare at the door, his brows furrowing slightly as he contemplated following after her. He’d never wanted to be with somebody so bad in his life, but he couldn’t help but wonder if she was having regrets; if this was her way of telling him that she had changed her mind and she didn’t want him. So, instead of following her he would let out a soft sigh and turn away from the door, closing his eyes for a moment before walking back to his rooms. He would glance around the place before shaking his head before moving to a desk that was situated in his sitting rooms. He would snatch up a piece of parchment and a quill, biting his bottom lip as he tried to think of what to write before actually doing so. After he was done he would wave the piece of paper in the air for a moment, letting the ink dry before folding it and walking out to find a servant. He persuaded the individual to lead him to Renny’s chambers, where he would place the note on her pillow before quickly leaving. It read something like:
My Dearest Love, I am truly sorry for angering you, if I have, and I hope to remedy the situation as soon as you wish to be in my presence. I would have followed to speak with you, but you seemed to want me to leave, so I felt that a note would probably be best. Do not feel obligated to join me tonight, as I understand that you may want your space. I love you, and I truly am sorry for whatever I may have done to upset you. Love, Alpin Mahon After he had delivered the note he would make his way back to his daughter’s rooms, speaking to her caregivers before spending time with her. He hadn't given her much attention these past couple of days, and felt that it was only right that he give his attention to her while he had the time. Eventually, though, she grew tired and after putting her down for a nap he would make his way slowly back to his own rooms, choosing a book from a shelf in the corner before settling down in a chair with it, though he couldn't quite bring himself to read it. He was much too distracted about the fact that he'd done something to upset his wife, and he couldn't manage to figure it out so that he could fix it.

She sighed and frowned when he didn't follow her into the queen's chambers. Part of her was relieved by it, but part of her wanted to smack him over it at the same time. She shook her head, however, and forced herself to focus on the task at hand. It took a bit of time for her to finish mending the dresses that had been laid out. Unfortunately she didn't really feel any better afterwards. In fact, she probably felt worse. Another sigh drifted from her lips, but she forced herself out of the chair, folded the dresses, and carried them to the queen's bedchamber where she stashed them in one of the many trunks that contained different articles of clothing. She returned to the sitting room then and stored all the sewing equipment back where she had pulled it from.
After checking on a few more things to make sure that everything would be in order for the queen's return she found that she was done for the day. She ran a hand through her hair, tugging on the ends for a moment as she debated what to do. It only took a minute or two of debating before she decided that she was going to her own chambers for the time being. When she arrived she found the note from Alpin on her pillow and her heart clenched. She definitely felt like a complete jerk for making him think that she didn't want him around. Especially considering the fact was that she didn't want him to leave at all. She knew she was being unreasonable, but it was just so hard to know what to do in this sort of situation. She'd never been married before, never mind in love.
A sigh drifted from her lips as she flopped onto the bed for a moment, laying on her back. She reread the note and felt even worse. Deciding she needed to remedy this situation; because it could only be a bad thing if he left for Carnaghan with the wrong impression, she pushed herself off the bed. Standing she straightened her dress to the best of her ability, tugging at it only to growl when it didn't want to straighten. Two days of wearing the stupid thing with a quick wash in between hadn't done anything for the dress's appearance. A sigh drifted from her and she took a few moments to change her clothes into something more presentable, using the wash basin in her bedchamber to clean up quickly as well. Once she felt she looked at least a little more presentable she wandered down the hall to where she knew Alpin's chambers to be. Taking a deep breath she reached up to tentatively knock on the door. The sound was light, so it would be easy to miss. However she couldn't bring herself to knock any louder, and so she just stood there wringing her hands nervously and hoping that he, or someone, would have heard the soft sound.

When he heard a knock at the door he had been chewing on his bottom lip, his fingers dancing over the cover as he tried to figure out what he had done wrong. Honestly, he almost lost the tentative sound, it being so quiet and his mind being so focused on his wife that the sound barely registered in his brain. Even once it did he almost let it slide, not wanting to deal with anything other than figuring out how to make Ranait happy with him again. But, if it was his daughter or somebody like that he couldn’t just leave her standing there and would thus stand, tossing the book onto a small side table before making his way towards the door. He would close his eyes for a moment once he reached it, drawing in a deep breath and plastering a fake smile over his face before opening the door, only to freeze as he recognized Renny.
He would blink, the smile dripping off of his face as he looked at her. It looked as if she had cleaned herself up and changed dresses, though that wasn’t really what he was focused on; his eyes were stuck on the wringing of her hands and the fact that she looked nervous. And the fact that she had knocked on what she should now consider her rooms. He would bite his bottom lip once again, though when he did he would finally taste the blood that had gathered; having worried it so much earlier that it was apt to bleed. “Why did you knock?” he would ask, his brows furrowing as he steps back a little bit, opening the door wider so that she could enter, “We share everything now…you don’t need to knock.”

She bit her lip when the door finally opened and seeing the way he froze and the smile slide from his face made her heart jump into her throat. She hadn't realized that the smile on his face had been a fake one, so that reaction to seeing her made her want to both cry and run away. She choked back the tears that welled up in her eyes, refusing to let them spill over. There was no reason for him to be happy to see her, she reminded herself. She'd been all but down right cold to him; possibly even that. "I..um..Force of habit," she managed to get out when he asked her why she'd knocked. When he held the door open wider she hesitated, not sure if she really wanted to enter or not. Now she was the one who felt out of place; like maybe she shouldn't be here at all. Maybe he didn't want her here after all. It wasn't a nice feeling, to say the very least.
"I'm sorry I made you feel like I didn't want you around," she blurted, and the pain of her injured hands finally made her stop wringing them. She began to fidget in other ways, pulling at her dress despite the fact that it clearly didn't need to be straightened or anything like that. She shifted her weight from one foot to another and her expression was quite similar to a deer in the headlights. She felt like she should just bolt, but didn't want him to think that she was mad at him before he left. "I didn't mean to make you think I was mad at you," she choked out. She was still standing in the doorway. Fighting the urge to tuck tail and run away; her only recourse had been to stand there like she was rooted to the spot. Entering his rooms without knocking felt like an invasion of his privacy, even if they were married. The same went for entering his rooms when she felt like he didn't actually want her there. She wasn't going to force her presence on him. "I just thought you should know that before you left," she added lamely, ducking her head and turning away from him. Part of her wanted to leave and let it go at that, but part of her wanted to stay and force him to not be mad at her. Not that she had even the slightest clue how to make him not mad at her. Also, she didn't really do the whole forcing people thing.

When she said that it was a force of habit he would nod slightly, though his frown would deepen. His brows would furrow when she hesitated upon him opening the door wider, immediately feeling even worse. He wondered why she had come if she didn’t want to be here, though when she apologized for making him feel as if she didn’t want him around he would shake his head slightly, “Don’t be,” he would say, his voice coming out rather calm, though he felt anything but calm inside. She’d apologized for making him feel that way, with obvious regret, but never said that she actually did want him around. He would glance down at his feet for a moment before looking up at her, watching as she fidgeted. He wondered why she was so nervous, though he didn’t get a chance to ask before she was speaking again. He would shrug slightly, “But you are,” it wasn’t a question, more of a statement, “If not mad then upset,” he would correct himself, clasping his hands behind his back as he watches her.
He felt insanely awkward, which was hilarious because he’d never felt this way in his entire life. When she said that she thought he should know that before he left he would blink, his head tipping a bit to the side as she turns away from him. He would stare at her back for a brief moment before reaching forward to gently grab her wrist, turning her back around to face him and tugging her close. “You didn’t do anything wrong,” he would murmur, reaching up to gently cup her chin and tilt it up so that she had to look at him, “I’m sorry for making you feel as if you had. It wasn’t my intention at all,” he would murmur softly, leaning in to gently kiss her forehead before releasing her chin. “Honestly…I’ve no idea what I’m doing right or wrong with you,” he would say on a short bout of nervous laughter, “With my last marriage I couldn’t do anything right, and I’ve never truly courted anybody before…” he would trail off with a shake of his head. “I’m kind of lost here.”

She sighed and swallowed passed the lump in her throat. "I'm not mad at you or upset with you. I'm upset with the situation," she said on a sigh. "I felt like, for a moment, everything was going back to the way it had been before all of this. Before I met you," she added to clarify. "I know it's stupid, but that's why I didn't say anything. When you tried to ask me what was wrong I couldn't justify saying anything because I refuse to lie, even if it's a simple nothing when there is something wrong. And. I felt it was pointless to say that I was upset by you returning to Carnaghan. I know you have to. And me saying something about it isn't going to change it. It just caught me a little by surprise that you were planning to leave tonight is all," she said with a frown and a deep sigh. When he lifted her chin and said he didn't know what he was doing right or wrong she let out her own burst of nervous laughter.
"Well, if it makes you feel any better I'm just as lost as you are. Before I met you I had barely flirted with anyone," she said. She made sure to say that she had barely flirted with anyone, because she was sure that some of what had happened between her and Esras could have been translated to flirting in some people's opinions. "I do want you around," she said on a sigh. "That's why I'm bothered by you leaving," she said before she took a step back from him. She still felt really odd being here. Goodbyes were definitely not her thing and she didn't want to have to suffer through that. "I..Um," she started, only to sigh again. She didn't want to leave him hanging. "I don't know what to do here," she admitted, shuffling her feet against the floor and dropping her head to stare downwards. "I feel like a complete idiot for being upset that you're leaving. Also...I feel really bad about not going with you."

Upon hearing her say that she was upset at the situation and not him he would sigh softly, reaching up to wipe his hand over his face. He should have known. “I’m sorry,” he would murmur, though he would quiet and let her continue to speak. When she was finished he would smile slightly at her, “It wasn’t like I would’ve been gone forever,” he would comment softly, “And I said ‘or tomorrow’, right?” he would ask with a soft laugh. “I’m sorry if it seems like I’m rushing back to Carnaghan, because I really don’t want to be there. I don’t want to be anywhere without you,” he would say with a slight frown. Now he felt almost as if he couldn’t leave, not tonight anyways. There wouldn’t be any way that he could do it and still be happy with himself afterward. “Carnaghan can wait until morning,” he would murmur, reaching up to gently brush his fingers over her cheek.
When she said that she was just as lost as him he would laugh softly, “I suppose you’re right,” he would say. “I’m bothered by leaving as well,” he would assure her, only to frown as she stepped away from him. He would release her wrist, letting out a soft sigh. He would shake his head when she said that she didn’t know what to do here, before saying that she felt like an idiot, and that she felt bad for not going with him. “Don’t feel bad, I understand. I wish I could change your mind, but I know that your place is at court for now. And my place is wherever you are,” he would say with a smile. “You don’t have to think about it right now anyways, I won’t leave tonight. I’ll leave tomorrow morning and be back before your evening meal,” he would promise with a smile, opening his arms for a hug though he wouldn’t pull her towards him or anything, letting her choose if she wanted to embrace him or not.
