He waited quietly while she dressed, knowing that the clothes would be too big but not knowing what else to get her. When she finally came around and stood in front of him he would grin, moving to wrap her in a hug, “You look really good in my shirt,” he would murmur, leaning down to gently kiss her forehead before pulling away, “Yes, but let me help you with your clothes first,” he would say, a soft chuckle fleeing his lips as he moves behind her. He would grab the extra fabric at the back of the shirt and pull it out, tying it in a knot so that it was a little less baggy. He wasn’t sure what to do with the kilt, though, and would merely leave it alone. After he was done he would move to gently grab her hand before walking back into his daughter’s room, “She likes to have her hair brushed before she sleeps,” he would whisper quietly, moving to grab the brush off of her bedside table before turning them around and moving to leave her room. He would have to arrange a time to spend time with her as he hadn’t gotten the chance this morning. He had planned to after his walk in the gardens, but one thing turned into another and now he was here, helping Ranait.
After they had exited the room he would lead her back to his own, though he would bypass the sitting room in order to enter his own bedroom, gesturing for her to sit on the bed. Once she did he would move to sit behind her with the brush and gently drag it through her hair, trying hard not to pull it. “I figured after I brushed your hair that you might want to take a nap or something,” he would admit, remembering that she had said that she was tired. He was just afraid that if he let her go back to her own rooms that her brother would find her and make her go back to Sunil with him, so he was actually kind of trying to hide her. “So, what do you think about getting married sooner rather than later?” he would ask as he gently slid the brush through her hair, hoping that she would agree. It wasn’t that he wouldn’t usually mind waiting, he just knew that her brother would do everything in his power to end their engagement and he really didn’t want that to happen.

Ranait O'Halloran
She smiled when he wrapped her in a hug before moving around to tie a knot at the back of the shirt to make it a little less baggy. When they moved through his daughter's rooms and he grabbed the brush from her night stand she would smile at him, though chose not to say anything for fear that she might wake the poor child up. Once they were out of her rooms she breathed a little easier, though she was a bit surprised to see that he was taking her back to his room, and even more surprised when they entered his bedchamber. A blush settled across her cheeks because the only bedchamber she'd ever been in at the palace aside from her own was the queen's; definitely never one that belonged to a man. When he gestured towards the bed she settled on the edge of it and smiled when he settled behind her to brush her hair. A soft, content sigh drifted from her lips when he began brushing her hair. This was the closest, aside from him washing her hair, that she'd gotten to someone playing with her hair in a long time and she was thoroughly enjoying it.
When he mentioned her taking a nap she frowned. "I can't just take a nap because I'm a little bit tired," she admitted softly. "Sleeping in the middle of the day typically leads to me not being able to sleep at night," she explained. When he asked how she felt about getting married sooner rather than later she couldn't help but smile. "I wouldn't mind that," she said softly. Her line of thinking about her brother was right there in line with his, and she was afraid that he might find a way to break the betrothal. "The problem, though, is that the queen isn't here to give her approval," she said with another frown. "I think she went to the eastern kingdom, though I don't really know why she did," she heaved a soft sigh. "And I don't think marriage is one of those things where you can just kind of do it and then ask for forgiveness later," she said with a soft giggle. "Especially not when the queen is supposed to have such a big say in it."

He would frown when she said that she couldn’t take a nap, “Not even for a little while?” he would ask, continuing to slide the brush through her hair, though he was pretty sure that all of the knots were out by now, “You’re just so tired,” he murmurs, letting out a soft sigh. He doubted he would be able to convince her, though. When she responded to his question he couldn’t help but grin, shifting forward to wrap his arms around her with brush still in hand, “Good,” he would murmur softly, nuzzling gently into her neck until he heard her say that the Queen had left. “She’s…not?” he would ask, his brows furrowing as he rests his chin on her shoulder. When she continued he couldn’t help but sigh, closing his eyes tightly as he tries to figure out what to do. “This was a grand time for her to leave,” he would say, honestly just a slight bit annoyed though he couldn’t truly be upset about the Queen leaving. She had no idea that this was going to happen.
“Perhaps we can follow her? She might end up going South to visit her sister while she’s gone,” he would say, frowning. If that was the case then nobody would know when she would get back and if they left the palace then her brother surely wouldn’t be able to find them, though he wasn’t sure if Ranait would agree to go with him. “I just don’t know if it would be wise to wait very long,” he would admit, frowning. He wasn’t sure if her brother would actually be able to break their betrothal, especially because he had witnesses that would affirm their agreement; there weren’t many people that would dare to anger a Duke, so he didn’t have to worry about any of them lying, but he was still worried about it nonetheless, and the sooner they were married, the better.

Alasdair O'Halloran
It had taken him a while to arrange his next move, but he wasn't about to take several hits and not come back swinging at some point. He'd gotten fixed up by a physician and the whole time he'd been plotting. Then it had hit him, the perfect way to get revenge against the duke and break the betrothal between the man and his sister. He'd gone to the clergy. It had taken a good bit of arguing on his part to get them to agree to this. He was attacking a Duke, after all. Not to mention the fact that the clergy were all so certain that he was too much of an honorable man of God to do what it was he was accusing the man of. He'd managed to convince them, though, when he'd told them that he'd caught the Duke kissing his sister and in an intimate position with her on the couch in the queen's sitting room. Of course, that had been a little bit of a lie, but he had watched as the man scooped her up and spirited her away towards where Al knew the Duke's rooms to be while he was at the palace.
Now he walked down the hall towards the mans rooms with a clergy man and a physician in tow. The stupid clergy man had insisted that a physician check his sister. A lump was formed in his throat over that little aspect of this whole thing. He couldn't be certain that the man had touched her, but he was so focused on finding a way to end the betrothal that he didn't actually stop to think about what might happen if the physician said that nothing was wrong with his sister. As they approached the rooms that belonged to the duke he couldn't hear any noise inside and he frowned, wondering if the servant that had said they were in the chambers had lied or just been wrong. However, when the clergy man and physician entered the sitting room he heard voices coming from the inner room and he tried to hide his excitement at what was about to happen. It bothered him a little bit when they stopped to knock on the room to the inner door instead of proceeding through, but he'd kind of expected that.

Ranait O'Halloran
She couldn't help but smile and lean against him when he nuzzled against her neck. She turned her head and planted a kiss on his nose, though when he reacted to the news of the queen not being around with shock she frowned. It hadn't occurred to her that he might not realize that the queen wasn't within the kingdom. She figured that everyone knew. However she merely lifted her shoulders in a shrug. A giggle spilled from her lips when he seemed frustrated by the matter and she turned to face him, wrapping her arms around his waist as she did so. "I'm sure everything will be fine, she'll return when she's seen to whatever business she needs to," she assured him softly, though he went on to say that maybe they should follow her. Her eyebrows shot up at that suggestion, though she could see where he was coming from in saying that it was possible that the queen would visit her sister in the southern kingdom while she was away. And then she realized that he was still worrying about her brother trying to find a way to break the betrothal and keep them from getting married.
She leaned back and lifted the hand with the stitches to trace the tips of her fingers over his eyebrows. "It's okay," she said softly. "There is no possible way that my brother can break the betrothal. You said you had witnesses to it, and that's all that matters," she assured him gently. "And my brother might be stupid, but he isn't stupid enough to kidnap me and bring war to his doors," she said softly. She had no idea that Al had been plotting while she was busy getting her hand stitched and taking a bath, so when a knock sounded on the inner door to the Duke's chambers she frowned softly and released the hold that she'd had on him. She, however, did give him the privilege of answering his own door. They might be betrothed, but if she answered the door to his personal bedchamber it would probably look really weird.

Alpin was starting to calm at her words, his shoulders relaxing and a genuine smile teasing up the corners of his lips, “You're right, I shouldn’t worry so much about it,” he would murmur softly, leaning in to kiss her just as a knock sounded on the door. He would close his eyes and sigh, shaking his head slightly as the woman lets go of him. He would move to stand before letting out a soft laugh, “You might want to go sit in a chair,” he would say softly, knowing that whoever was at the door would spread rumors that he had the lady-in-waiting in his bed. He would wait until she moved before going to the door, not oblivious to his physical state. He knew that he had the woman’s blood on his clothes, and they were all rumpled and such from carrying her around so much. He obviously didn’t have time to change though so he would merely lift his chin and open the door, allowing a friendly smile to part his lips.
That was, until he saw a familiar face at his door. Several in fact, one of which was a clergyman who he often went to seeking advice and retribution for the sins that he feared he had committed throughout his life. He would swallow thickly, the smile disappearing as he realized that her brother was there as well, and knew that this visit could only bring trouble. “Bishop McCallen,” he would greet the man, reaching out to shake his hand before opening the door wider and gesturing for him to enter, letting the clergyman and physician pass, though before Ranait’s brother could enter he would move to block his way, “Marquess. You may wait in my sitting room,” he would rumble before closing the door in his face and turning back around. “I am truly honored by the pleasure of your visit,” he would say, forcing a smile back onto his face as he addresses the two men.

Bishop McCallen and the physician entered the duke's bedroom to see that Ranait was sitting on a chair in the corner. They both gave her a polite smile and then the Bishop turned his attention to Alpin. "Duke, Carnaghan," he greeted the man formally and flashed him a small smile. He rather liked the Duke and sincerely doubted Marquess O'Halloran's accusations against the man, but he had to take all such things seriously. "I am sorry to bother you, and I do hope you forgive this intrusion, but accusations have been brought against you," he said with a tired tone. "Not that I believe the person who is accusing you, but all such accusations brought to the church must be thoroughly studied," he explained carefully. "The new Marquess of Sunil has brought to our attention that he believes you may have...violated his little sister," he said and shuddered visibly. "While the two of you are betrothed in front of witnesses, we must make sure that she is still in tact, as a proper marriage has not yet taken place," he continued on a sigh. "I'm sorry to subject the two of you to this, but we must take all matters brought before the clergy as seriously as possible," he informed them both. The physician nodded and moved around the duke and bishop both to Lady Ranait's side. "The physician will examine the lady, and if it is proved that she is in tact, the Marquess will be properly dealt with. If, however," he said with a tone of warning. "The woman is found to have been violated the betrothal will become null and void and I will have to take this matter to the queen."

Ranait O'Halloran
She smiled at him when he said that she was right and he was worrying too much. He had just leaned in to kiss her when the knock had sounded at the door and she literally pouted. However, when he told her to move to the chair she nodded in agreement and immediately got up from the bed to move to the chair. Once she was settled the duke opened the door and she frowned when she saw Bishop McCallen standing on the other side of the door with a man that appeared to be a physician and her brother. Anger caused her to glare daggers at Alasdair as she knew this had to be his way of retaliating against the duke for earlier. She wanted to leap up off the chair and launch herself at her brother, but she forced herself to stay put and placed her hands in her lap like a proper lady. She had to hold back a giggle when Alpin unceremoniously closed the door right in her brother's face.
However when the Bishop explained the reason that he and the physician were there her jaw went slack. "That asshole," she exclaimed and leaped up from her chair only to force herself to sit back down when she realized she'd just sworn in front of the Bishop. A blush settled across her cheek and she mumbled an apology. The Bishop gave her a look that was a mix of chastising and approval. It seemed that he didn't much care for her brother either, or at least didn't much care for the accusations he had said against the Duke; she couldn't be sure which one it was. When the physician moved to her side and the Bishop explained that she would have to be examined she turned bright red. "The Duke never touched me in that way," she said in a strained voice, but she knew she didn't have a choice in this matter. A sigh drifted from her lips, but she nodded to the physician. "Fine. You have my permission to examine me," she said to the physician and then turned to the Bishop. "And when he finds out that the Duke never touched me I expect you to hold to your word that my brother will be punished for this," she said on a soft growl.

Alpin would listen quietly as the Bishop spoke, a low sigh falling from his lips as he revealed the accusations brought against him. He would lift his hands to his face, dragging them roughly over his skin before dropping them to his sides once again. When he said that they would have to make sure that Ranait was "in tact" he felt a sort of protective anger rise in his chest; he didn't want anybody touching her, but he didn't really have a choice in the matter. When the man apologized he would shake his head, "No, I'm sorry that you're having to deal with this," he would say with a shake of his head, "I'm afraid that the Marquess of Sunil doesn't realize the severity of his actions. Unfortunately he will have to learn sooner rather than later," he would say with a shake of his head. Of course they all would think that he was talking about the punishment that the clergy would give him, but he was actually thinking about the next time he got a few minutes alone with the bastard.
When Ranait cursed he couldn't help but grin, "Yes, he is," he would agree, though he would quiet when he realized that the clergyman wouldn't really appreciate the language used. When she said that she would allow the physician to exam her he would sigh, clenching his jaw for a moment before turning to the Bishop, "Shall we give them some privacy?" he would ask, though he didn't wait for an answer; he was already at the door, opening it for the clergyman. If another man had to touch her then he sure as hell wasn't going to watch, and he wasn't going to let another man watch either, no matter how religious he might be.

The Bishop nodded when Ranait consented to letting the physician examine her and he followed the duke out of the room as quickly as possible. He glanced to the Marquess and shook his head disapprovingly, but didn't say anything.
In the bedroom the physician gave Ranait directions and examined her. He found that she was indeed in tact still, not that he was surprised by this little bit and shook his head. He finished his exam, apologized to the lady, and then went to share his findings with the Bishop. He pulled open the door and smiled faintly at the men gathered there. "The lady is in tact," he announced.
The Bishop, of course, was livid with Marquess O'Halloran and he rounded on the young man. "You brought accusations against the Duke for nothing," he stated. This wasn't an accusation; no, this was a statement of truth. "You will be banished from the court and stay at Sunil until you have learned your lesson. You do not falsely accuse others, and if you are going to accuse someone of something, especially someone in as high of standing as a Duke, you had better have proof next time," he growled at the man before he turned back to Alpin and nodded to the man. "Again, I give my apologies to you," he said to the man before he and the physician left.

Ranait O'Halloran
She suppressed a giggle when Alpin agreed that her brother was an asshole. The smile fell from her face when he ushered the bishop through the door and she realized she was going to have to sit through this exam alone. She needn't have worried, however, because the physician was as gentle and quick about it as he possibly could be. When he finished the exam and apologized to her for it she just sort of nodded. She sincerely wanted to murder her brother right about now, and so when the physician went to exit the room she was hot on his heels after she straightened herself out. She heard his announcement to the room, watched her brother's face go white, and then even whiter when the bishop rounded on him. Normally that would have satisfied her, but her anger towards her brother had been welling up since he'd stormed in on her and the duke earlier, making the accusations that he had.
As soon as the door closed behind the physician and the bishop she launched herself at her brother, not caring that she was doing this in front of the Duke and not even thinking about the fact that both of her hands were already injured. "You foul," she shrieked at him as she plowed into him. "I can't believe you're so stupid," she growled as she drove an elbow into his stomach at the last minute, remembering that she'd already injured both of her hands thanks to him. "No. I can believe you are that stupid," she spat. "What I can't believe is that somehow we came from the same stock," she growled as she ignored his grunt from her elbow driving into his stomach. "I hate you. Just so we're clear. You've crossed the line one too many times in the last two days and this...This is just beyond ridiculous Alasdair. That you would stoop so low because you're jealous that I'm happy with the man you set up for me to marry and no woman in her right mind in this kingdom would ever think to look at you twice," she growled again. "I wish they would have done something worse than just banish you to Sunil," she said with a huff. She grabbed a hold of one of his elbows with the hand that was wrapped and pulled him towards the door which she carefully opened with her stitched hand. "Get out. Out of my life. I don't care if I never see you again," she said as she shoved him unceremoniously from the room.
Once her brother was out of the room she closed the door and leaned against it with a sigh. Her eyes fell closed and she shook her head at his stupidity once again. "I am so sorry," she whispered, hoping that the Duke knew she was talking to him. "I honestly did not think that he would take things this far," she swore to him. Her eyes opened and tears swam in them. She was honestly afraid that the Duke would decide that she wasn't worth marrying after this one.

Alpin wasn't at all fazed when the physician entered and declared that Ranait was in tact, he wasn't even surprised when the Bishop rounded on Alasdair and exiled him to Sunil. He was surprised, though, when as soon as the door closed behind the two men that Ranait attacked her brother. It wasn't that he hadn't expected that she would be angry, it was just that he hadn't expecting for her to get to him first. Which was probably a good thing, because he would've killed him. He was tempted to grab her and make her stop, afraid that she would hurt her hands more though he doubted that she would be too happy about it, so he would merely wait, watching as Ranait jammed her elbow into his stomach before berating him and finally throwing him out.
When she closed the door and then leaned against it he would frown, his brows furrowing as he moves to wrap her in his arms, "Shh, it isn't your fault," he would murmur softly, "Though now you see why I wanted to go follow the Queen," he would murmur, reaching up to gentle cup the back of her head as he holds her close to him. After a moment he would gently press a kiss to the top of her head, "I'm afraid I'll have to kill a physician though," he would joke, though he kind of felt as if he should, "Looking upon your beauty comes with a price. You stole my heart, so now I'm going to have to go steal his," he would laugh softly, trying to make her feel better. He knew that this all had to be extremely stressful on her, and he didn't know how to help her besides try to lighten the mood.

Ranait O'Halloran
She gave a soft sigh when he wrapped her in his arms. She leaned into his hug and nuzzled her cheek against his shoulder, feeling better now that he had reassured her. She tilted her head back and smiled up at him sheepishly when he said that this was why he'd wanted to follow the queen. "I'm sorry," she said again. "At least we shouldn't have to worry about him anymore," she said a bit hesitantly. She had no idea if there was going to be anyone enforcing her brother's banishment, but then she heard a scuffle in the hallway followed by a curse. Canting her head to one side she turned away from Alpin and opened the door to see her brother being carted off by two large men with swords around their hips. She shook her head and wished for a brief second that she could go to him, but she didn't. She knew that he was getting what he deserved, but he was still her brother, so she couldn't help that a part of her still wanted to help him despite all the damage that he had caused in the last two days alone.
She closed the door and turned back to Alpin to hear his remarks about the physician and she couldn't help but giggle. She walked back into his arms and froze when he said that she'd stolen his heart. Slowly she lifted her head to look up at him and then she completely melted. She stood up on her tip toes ('cause let's face it, he's almost a foot taller than she is) and pressed a kiss to his lips, curling her arms around his neck and pressing herself against him. She kissed him in a way that she hadn't before. This kiss was more demanding, despite her normally timid nature, and it was definitely a deeper kiss than any of the previous ones had been. She didn't stop kissing him until she made completely breathless by the kiss and then she lowered herself back down to her normal flat-footed stance and just laid her forehead against his chest, still breathing a little heavily from the passion behind that kiss.

When she apologized again he would laugh softly and shake his head, though he figured he would never be able to stop blaming herself. Or feeling mortified over her brother’s actions, whichever one was the reason behind her apologizing. When she went to the door upon hearing some sort of commotion outside he would frown slightly, only to have her shut the door and come back to him. He would smile down at her, wrapping his arms tightly around her only to have her freeze in his arms. He would frown slightly, his brows furrowing, “Sor-” he would start to apologize, only to feel her lips against his. He had thought that she didn’t like what he had said, thinking that it was probably too soon to say something lik this, but her actions proved otherwise. He would close his eyes, tightening his arms around her as he kisses her back. He couldn’t believe that she was kissing him like this; the innocent kisses from earlier disappearing and leaving passion in their wake. He honestly felt like he was burning from the inside out.
When the kiss was over and she rested her head on his chest he would blink, a little bit dazed and kind of out of breath. Though, after a moment he would let out a low groan, “Ranait…you shouldn’t kiss me like that,” he would say, deep laughter rumbling up from his chest afterwards. He was flushed with want, though, and he felt like he should probably put space between them but he couldn’t bring himself to do that, merely standing there with his arms wrapped tightly around her.

Ranait O'Halloran
When the kiss was over and he told her that she shouldn't kiss him like that she frowned. "Sorry," she said a bit sheepishly. She disengaged herself from him with a sigh. She really didn't know what to do now and found herself fidgeting with the over-sized shirt that he had loaned to her. She wandered around the sitting room for a few moments before another knock sounded at the door. This time she answered it without pausing to think because quite honestly she felt a little bit awkward after having kissed Alpin like that and she needed some sort of distraction. When it proved to be a servant with a dress for her she grinned with relief, anxious to be out of the over-sized clothes. "Thank you," she said to the servant as she took the dress. The woman curtsied to her and then scuttled off. On top of the dress she noticed a hair ribbon and folded underneath of it she could feel an under dress. She turned towards Alpin and smiled. "I'm going to go change," she said.
She walked across the sitting room to the adjacent bedchamber door and opened it so that she could walk through. Once she was on the other side she pulled the door closed and quickly changed out of the kilt and shirt that Alpin had let her borrow until a servant brought her own clothes to her. She slipped into the dress, frowning when she realized that was the type that laced up most of the back. It was also a bit low-cut for her liking, but at this point she wasn't going to complain about the style of the dress. She was just happy to be wearing something that actually fit her. She picked up the brush that the duke had left on his bed and ran it through her hair before she pulled it back and used the ribbon to tie it into a bun on top of her head. Once she was finished she returned to the sitting room and approached him carefully. "Would you mind lacing up my dress, please," she asked in the sweetest tone she could possibly manage, offering her back to him if he would oblige her.
