Ranait O'Halloran
She'd giggled at his attempt to assure her that she was an angle, though she did rather disagree with that conclusion. She frowned when he said that she should be honest, because she had been. "I think I'm offended by that. Just because most ladies of the court like to over exaggerate and spread rumors doesn't mean we all do," she countered a bit hotly. However the little bit of heat left her when he burst into laughter and she couldn't help but giggle at what he said about sounding like a woman. "I didn't say that," she defended herself. "I just meant that I think the song was written by a woman," she said with a giggle. His laughter was infectious, and she couldn't help that she'd responded to it with her own laughter.
When he'd stood up and whistled to the bird it made her realize that she'd all but ignored the poor thing. She moved a bit closer to where he stood and tilted her head to whistle a soft sing-songy tune to the bird for a moment before he told her to lead the way. She dipped a small curtsy to him and lead him through the queen's sitting room to a different door that opened up into Moira's personal gardens. "I hope you don't mind the area that I chose. It's really pretty and peaceful out here, and with so much nature around I thought it would be best for learning new words," she explained softly as she wandered out into the garden. A soft sigh drifted from her lips and she did something that she usually did while she was outside, she kicked off her shoes and let her toes sink into the soft grass of the garden. She absolutely loved nature, and while running around barefoot wasn't exactly lady-like, she didn't much care.

Esras would laugh when she says that she just thought that the song was written by a woman, "What, so men can't write meaningful love ballads?" he would tease, his green eyes twinkling with mischief. "You know, I could prove you wrong. If you're lucky I might just write one," he'd tease, obviously goading her. He would grin when she approached him and whistled to his bird, listening as it repeated it back to her before she curtsied and moved out of the library. He would follow closely behind her until they reached the garden, choosing to quicken his step so that he was able to walk beside her. When she commented about hoping that he didn't mind the area she chose he would laugh and shake his head, "Well, it makes sense to me. And besides, how could I mind going anywhere when I have an angel at my side?" he would ask, his tone lightly teasing as he brought up the angel thing again.
When she kicked off her shoes he would watch her for a minute, wondering what else she would do to take him by surprise. He would lean down, scooping up her shoes and letting them dangle off of his fingers as he walked along beside her, carrying them for her without even thinking much about it. When they had been walking for a few moments he would lift the opposite hand, letting his bird fly off to some nearby flowers before turning his complete attention to the lady-in-waiting once again. "So, what words are next?" he would ask eagerly.

Ranait O'Halloran
She giggled at his jest about men and love ballads. "I didn't say that, nor did I mean it. I just meant that everything I've heard as suggested that the song was written by a woman," she explained. She grinned when he said that he just might write one. "I have no doubt that you would be perfectly capable of writing any kind of music that you chose to," she said honestly. A blush settled across her cheeks for the upteenth time since his arrival in the queen's sitting room when he teased her about the angel thing again. "Well, I'm sure that plenty of people could find many different things to complain about when I'm around," she said with a chuckle. "Like the fact that I just took my shoes off. Not very lady-like, and I assure you that my parents would both thoroughly chastise me over that," she said with a giggle. When he scooped her shoes off the ground she reached to take them from him. "I was just going to leave them there. You don't have to carry my shoes," she said with a frown.
He changed the subject on her though, and she couldn't help but grin. "I think we'll start with the simple ones," she said with a giggle as she darted off across the garden to a large shade tree that stood along one of the walls surrounding it. "The word tree, at least the generic version, is crann," she said with a giggle as she pulled herself up onto a low hanging branch and used her feet along with her upper body strength to get to a slightly bigger branch that could hold her weight. She patted the limb that she sat on and continued. "The word for branch is brainse," she said with another smile. This was actually really fun to her for some reason. She'd probably make a pretty decent instructor when it came to learning foreign languages. "Now, repeat and tell me the word in English right afterwards. That should help it stick better," she smiled.

Esras laughed when she said that there was plenty of things that a person could complain about when being around her, namely her taking off her shoes, "Oh no, m'lady. I don't mind at all. In fact, I would take off my shoes as well, but for the fear that they would stink and bother you," he would joke, a grin settling once again over his face. When she tried to take her shoes from him he would simply ignore her and hold them out of her reach, intent on carrying them for her. It seemed to work, though, as when he changed the subject she just went right along with it. When she said that they would start with the simple ones he would nod, opening his mouth to respond only to laugh as she darted off towards a tree. He would follow quickly behind her, and reached her just in time to hear her saying the word for tree. He watched again as she actually climbed the tree, settling on a branch before patting it in what he took as a gesture for him to join her. He would stare at the tree for a moment, knowing that the lower hanging branch that she had used to get up to a slightly higher branch wouldn't hold his weight, so he moved just below the one she was sitting on, dropping her shoes before jumping and grabbing the branch towards the base of the tree and pulling himself up.
Before he could even get settled she was continuing with the lesson, causing him to shake his head and chuckle softly. Ranait was definitely something else. When she commanded that he repeat and translate the words in English he would stare at her for a moment, trying to remember what she had said, "Brainse and crann," he would say the words slowly, "Tree and branch," he would say with a grin, letting his hands rest on the branch that they were sitting on. "Did I pronounce them correctly?" he would ask with a tip of his head, his expression growing serious as he waits for her instruction.

Alasdair O'Halloran
Al had made the ride to the palace that day, intending to bring to his sister the news of their father's death and his 'promotion' to Marquess of Sunil. He knew that she wasn't going to be happy when he announced to her that she was going to be married, but she would just have to deal with it. He'd never much cared for the fact that his sister had been coddled since she was born, and now that he was the Marquess; that was going to change. Innocent little Ranait was in for some serious life changes, and he was just the person to bring them about. Oh he loved his little sister, of course, but there was a part of him that had long harbored a jealousy over the fact that she'd been more spoiled than he. She, however, didn't act like the spoiled child. No, that was all his job. Not that it was something he'd ever openly admit to anyone but himself, but that's not the point. "Look, I don't care if she's with the queen herself. Ranait is my sister and I need to see her," he told the servant before him firmly. The poor man, not knowing what else to do, lead Alasdair to the queen's chambers, where Al spotted Renny outside in the garden with someone.
Ignoring the servant he opened the door to the queen's gardens and stepped outside. His gaze narrowed when it landed on some boy that was sitting in a tree next to her. And of course she didn't have shoes on; how very un-lady-like. He gave a light snort and shook his head before he called out to his sister. "Ranait O'Halloran. Get down from that tree and come greet your brother," he called out with a self-satisfied grin plastering itself to his face. He didn't really know why he enjoyed harassing her so much, except for the fact that he was her brother and that's what brother's did to their sisters. Especially their younger sisters.

Ranait O'Halloran
She smiled sweetly at him when he pulled himself up onto the branch next to her, though she couldn't help but giggle at the way he did it. "Perfect," she said when he asked if he'd pronounced them correctly. "Except crann is tree and brainse is branch," she teased lightly, though she knew what he'd meant. It was just the fact that he said them in the opposite order in Gaelic v.s. English. "Now," she said as she turned her attention to the end of the branch that they were sitting on. "Leaf is duille and tree trunk is stoc crann," she said with a smile. "Tree top is barr crann," she added, making it a little bit harder by giving him more than two words to memorize at a time. The sound of a familiar voice distracted her and her heart jumped in her chest. The only reason Alasdair would be here at the palace was if something serious had happened. Unlike her, he hadn't been sent to live at court. "Excuse me," she said politely to Esras before jumping down from the tree branch. She realized then that she didn't have her shoes, but she didn't have time to worry about that.
Straightening her shoulders and lifting her chin like a proper lady she also took the time to lift the skirts of her dress before walking across the garden to greet her brother. "Al," she said sweetly as she reached out to give him a hug. The hug was brief and then she stepped back to take in his expression. Strange, he didn't look upset, but rather excited, which could actually be misleading with her brother. He got excited over things that normal people got upset over, so she prepared herself to hear about something horrible. "What brings you to court?" she asked curiously. Though, honestly, she wasn't sure she wanted to know why he was here. It wasn't that she didn't love her older brother, but more that he tended to harass her whenever he was around, and that got tiresome. Especially because he never failed to do it. She swore that the day he failed to harass her she would bring in physicians from across the country to find out what was wrong with him and prepare herself for his death.

Esras laughs and shakes his head at her teasing, "Well, I hope you can forgive my error," he commented. When she then continued to tell him other words and their translation he would listen intently, repeating them over and over in his mind after hearing them, wanting to get them right when she asked him to repeat them. Only, a voice interrupted their session and she quickly excused herself before jumping down from the tree and moving towards the man that stood just inside the gardens. He remembered him saying something about being her brother, which was interesting because the tone of his voice was anything but brotherly. Even though he disliked his sister with a passion, he still treated her with nothing less than respect whenever he had to deal with her. He watched as Renny moved towards the man and hugged him before he would finally jump down from the tree as well. Once his feet hit the ground he would stoop down to collect the lady's shoes before slowly walking towards them, a friendly smile teasing up the corners of his lips.
He would move so that he was standing beside Renny, letting his gaze flick from her brother to her. It seemed that her brother was excited, which he figured meant that he would be bringing good news to the lady-in-waiting, and he wanted to see her expression when her brother shared whatever delight he had brought with him. Sure, she'd been smiling and laughing her whole time with him, but he had the insane notion that he would get to see her truly happy, or at least excited. He didn't realize that it would be awkward for him to stand there without introducing himself to the brother, nor that it would most likely be unwanted for him to hear whatever this 'Al' had to say to his sister.

Alasdair O'Halloran
Al grinned and hugged his sister as he would any other time that he had greeted her. "Darling sister," he said and nodded to the boy when he joined Renny, though his face said that he was anything but pleased by the boy's presence. "I come bearing news," he started, and frowned a moment. "Both bad and not so bad," he continued. "The bad news is that father is no longer with us," he paused to let that sink in. "The not so bad news is that now that he has passed I have inherited his title as Marquess of Sunil," this time he didn't give a lot of time to let that news sink in. Instead he went on rather quickly. "Now I know that you're going to say this isn't good news because father is dead, but it's not really you that it effects," he said with a smile. "Oh, also. I have decided that since your future is now my responsibility, you will be marrying soon. I have already arranged it for you to be married to the Duke of Carnaghan," he announced with a smile. "You, my dear little sister, are moving up in the world," he said, the smile not fading from his face for an instant.

Ranait O'Halloran
She was stunned. Literally. To find out that her father was dead. And here her brother was, standing in front of her, grinning from ear to ear and already claiming her father's title. What was wrong with him? How could he? How the hell could he be standing there smiling at her and not breaking down over the death of the man that she'd, apparently mistakenly, thought that she and all her siblings loved. And to tell her that he was going to, no apparently already had, taken it upon himself to marry her off to some man that she'd barely even heard of before now? She felt like he had slapped her. And, honestly, he might as well have, given the expression on her face. Her lower jaw was dropped and tears were welling up in her eyes, but she couldn't cry. No. Not in front of him, and certainly not in front of Esras. She wouldn't give her brother the pleasure of seeing her cry, and she wouldn't turn into a sobbing lunatic in front of the young man that she'd just met today.
No. Instead her eyes narrowed, and she held back the pain she felt at her father's death. Instead she let loose her rage at her brother. "You. You insufferable," she croaked, a growl slipping from her lips, and suddenly she didn't care if she was lady-like or Esras's opinion of her as an "angel" changed. "Our father has been dead for a few days at the most, and you're standing here grinning from ear to ear over being lifted from a mere Baron to the title of Marquess and telling me that you've already arranged a marriage for me, even though it couldn't have happened more than within the last few hours?! The Duke of Carnaghan is in his thirties!" she all but shrieked at her brother. "I can't marry a man that's twice my age," she exclaimed vehemently. "I don't care if it would make me a duchess! I'd much rather be the lady-in-waiting to the queen that I am now, or even a farmer's wife! You're only doing this because father had agreed that I could choose who I married. That I could marry for love and you. You always hated him for that!"

He'd never been this shocked before. Sure, the first time his uncle had banged him over the head with a sword when he was a squire had certainly been shocking, and when he had been knighted he'd definitely been a little shocked, but this...he was pretty sure Renny's brother was playing some sort of joke on her. He'd expected some sort of happy news, like he'd bought her a horse or his mother had recently given birth to another sibling or something of the sort, not that her father had died and she was going to be married off to some thirty-year old creep. He was watching Ranait as the news was delivered so he didn't miss the drop of her jaw or the tears that had gathered in her eyes. For some reason it caused his heart to ache; such a perfect angel experiencing these emotions didn't seem fair. He shifted towards her, thinking that he might hug her or try to offer some soothing words only to recoil when she exploded on her brother. His brows would raise and he would turn to look at the Marquess, his gaze flicking between the two as shock enveloped him again. So the angel had some spunk, huh? Who would've known.
He didn't say that though, nor did he make some sort of joke, instead he would step in front of the lady, standing between her and her brother, "You may want to leave now. Before I fetch the Queen," he would say sternly, wishing that he had a sword hanging from his belt. He wasn't really sure why he had decided to stick up for the lady-in-waiting, but he figured scaring off the man would be the best for him; Renny looked as if she might just tear his head off.

Alasdair O'Halloran
Yeah, that had effectively wiped the smile from his face. In fact, his expression turned to one of outrage when she yelled at him the way that she did. "How dare you accuse me of not being upset over our father's death," he shouted back at her. "You'll marry who you're told, like it or not! Father and mother might have coddled you, but father is dead now and mother is just a woman! I am the head of this family now, and you would do well to remember it! Like it or not, decisions regarding your future are up to me. Not you. You're a child, and you don't know what's best for you. Marrying a Duke will not only make you a duchess, it will raise the standing of the whole family," he growled at her. Yeah, so he really didn't like being told that someone wasn't going to do his bidding, and as far as he was concerned she'd do it one way or another. "This may not be something that you want, but you will do it. And you'd better pray that when he decides to take you into his bed you get pregnant and have a boy," he added that last part just to add insult to injury. What can I say? That's just the type of person that he is.
Another growl erupted from his chest when the boy, whoever he was, stepped in and told him that he'd better leave before the lad summoned the queen. "This is no business of yours, boy," he sneered. "No more than it's any business of the queen's. She's my sister, and my charge. I can command of her what I wish," he growled. However, despite his wanting to prove a point here, he could see the rage on his sister's face. There was a reason her nickname was Renny. Small but mighty definitely fit her, and he knew that if he pushed her over the edge he'd likely wind up with a broken nose. Shy though she might be, and seemingly sweet to those who had never faced her wrath, he knew that when she was pushed over the edge she would snap. And when she snapped, she tended to let fists fly. It wasn't a very lady-like thing for her to do, but growing up with all brothers and two of them older, she'd learned to scrap pretty early in life, and he remembered several times that she'd pinned Blain down and proceeded to pummel the crap out of him when he'd pissed her off as a child. He didn't particularly care to be on the receiving end of that treatment. "This isn't over," he said around the kid's shoulder. "You will do as your told, Renny," he said with a glare aimed at first his sister and then the young man who had stepped between the two of them. Then, without further ado, he turned on his heel and marched off.

Ranait O'Halloran
She glared daggers at her brother when he began arguing with her. However, when he said what he did about sleeping with the Duke and praying for a boy, she let out an ear piercing shriek. That was it! She'd had it with that insufferable asshole, and she wasn't about to sit back and let him treat her like that. "You," she screamed before she ducked around Esras and launched herself with all her might at her older brother. She tackled him to the ground and began hitting and kicking every part of him that she could manage to land a blow on. "How dare you," she screamed, each word accentuated by a blow. "I. Fucking. Hate. You. I. Wish. You. Had. Never. Been. Born. I. Hope. You. Rot. In. Hell," she screamed as she continued to rain blow after blow onto her brother. Normally she wouldn't have reacted this way. Normally she would never hit someone else unless they hit her, but he'd pushed her much too far. The funny thing is that they'd both known it was coming, Alasdair especially. He'd tried to avoid it, but she wasn't going to have any of that.
After a moment or two of realizing what she was doing she turned bright red and immediately leaped up. Violence wasn't the answer, and she knew it from a logical standpoint, but that man had a way of pushing her past logic. "You," she growled at him. "You might be my brother, but I swear to god if I have to fight you tooth and nail for the rest of my days you will NOT control me," she raged at him before he got up off the ground and took off. When he was no longer within earshot she choked out a sob, finally letting the tears fall that she'd been holding back since her brother had told her of their father's death. She fell to the ground, her dress pretty much ruined now thanks to the fact that her brother had saw fit to push her past her limit with her patience. Her arms wrapped around her knees and she sat there like that for a few moments, rocking back and forth and letting herself sob.
Then she shook her head and pushed herself up off the ground. She wiped at the tears angrily before turning her attention to Esras. "I told you I wasn't an angel," she said on a choked laugh. "I'm so sorry," she whispered and her head dropped significantly. She might be strong in most cases, but in this she felt utterly defeated. Truly lost. She had no idea what she was supposed to do, or how she was supposed to get out of marrying the duke. All she knew was that she couldn't. Couldn't marry a man that was twice her age. Couldn't do her brother's bidding just because he'd gained the title of Marquess with the death of their father. She might feel defeated at the moment, but she would never, never, let her brother know that. She couldn't let him win in this.

He knew she was going to do it. He just had this feeling in his gut that she was going to dart past him and start whaling on her brother, yet he didn't stop her. He simply edged out of the way as she ducked past him, taking a step back as he watches her tackle the Marquess. His eyes were wide as he watched her practically beat the shit out of the man, surprised upon feeling that the sight was actually rather satisfying; he didn't even know the man and he felt that he was a royal asshole and that he deserved every blow that the lady-in-waiting dealt him. When Renny finally leaped up and yelled at her brother before darting off he would finally let a smile break out on his face. "I told you. I told you that you may want to leave, and you decided not to listen," he would laugh before shaking his head and turning to go find Ranait. When he found her she was sitting on the ground with her arms wrapped around her knees and sobbing.
His heart wrenched and the smile dripped off of his face as he moved to kneel beside her, reaching out to gently pat her back as he tried to console her. When she pushed herself up off of the ground he would sigh softly, looking up at her when she said that she had told him she wasn't an angel. At that his lips would split in a grin, "No, you're wrong. You are an angel. You might be a fallen angel, but you're an angel nonetheless," he would say with a soft bout of laughter, only to cut it off as she bowed her head and apologized. He would immediately leap to his feet and move to hug her, "Oh no," he would murmur, "You have nothing to be sorry for," he says, trying to soothe her. He knew that she must be going through hell right now, and despite having only met her today he had the strong desire to comfort her and help her through this.

She couldn't help but laugh through her tears when he said that she might be a fallen angel, but she was an angel none-the-less. When he moved to hug her and told her that she had nothing to be sorry for her heart clenched, but outwardly she frowned. "Why are you being so nice to me?" she asked him, blinking up at him with that innocent face of hers. "You don't even know me, but here you are. Standing next to me and offering me comfort after you just watched me pummel the crap out of my brother for being a complete jerk," she said with a frown. Nothing was making much sense to her right now. Her day had been going along great, even with the moments of embarrassment that had come with meeting someone new that she found attractive. Then, all of a sudden, her brother showed up out of no where telling her that their father was dead and he was marrying her off to some duke that was twice her age.
All she wanted to do was curl up in a corner and sob. Actually, part of her wanted to go running to the queen. With her mother not around, Moira had become somewhat of a second mother/older sister figure to her, and when she was distressed, that was who she ran to. A sigh drifted from her lips as she did her best to square her shoulders and push through it. She didn't like to lose control of her emotions, especially not in front of someone that she didn't know. So, needless to say, she felt like a complete idiot for first having lost control of her temper, and then having sobbed like a child in front of Esras, despite everything that had happened to push her to both points.

Moira had been looking for her lady in waiting and the knight she had invited to study for her. Of course they had gone off. Hopefully; to study still but elsewhere. She went into the gardens, as a feeling past her that, that's where Renny liked to go. The garden was flush and beautiful. Another thing Moira enjoyed being around. She enjoyed walking with Ranait to the gardens. As she got there she saw the last bit of Alasdair and then Ranait. When she fled and then Esras gave his small little come back. Moira let out a sigh. "Guards." She looked over her shoulder and summoned them. They fled to the Marquess, and Moira walked towards Esras and Ranait.
"Ranait O'Halloran." She said sharply. Like a woman who damn well had to say something about that. She felt it, she felt that everlasting understanding when someone had to marry someone else because they had word over their's. If Esras would jump to her defense the Queen gave a face she and her sister shared. A face that had brought men to their knees. The face she had put men to their deaths with. If only she had a good husband herself to listen to that face all of his shenanigans would be a thing of the past. The face wasn't a thing Moira gained as a princess. But as an independent woman. "I know your brother is.. For lack of the better word, an asshole. But there are places you can not hide within my shadows on things." She looked at her with those dark set of eyes. "What was your commotion about? The commotion I'll have to explain to all of the nobles now? Or have you forgotten the name you work for, or your own name for crying out loud."
