Alpin stared at the woman for a moment as he tried to figure out how he felt about Renny being violent towards her brother, though eventually he would decide that he was satisfied. It sounded like the douche had gotten what he deserved, especially when he was told what the man said. "I would never..." he started, only to shake his head. He wanted to be honest with her, "I would be lying if I said that I didn't crave heirs, but I would never ever force you into my bed. I would wait until you accepted me into yours," he would say honestly. He wasn't some horny fool just trying to get up every woman's skirt. "Perhaps I'll talk to him. He should know better than to be so cruel to a Duke's betrothed," he would murmur with a shake of his head. He was definitely going to have to do something about this man. When she responded to his reassurances that she was attractive he would grin, "Yeah, well ladies are hard to keep from bleeding out. Shirts can be replaced, a beautiful young Duchess-to-be by the name of Ranait cannot," he says, his tone rather amused. When she said that her head had been throbbing horribly but the ice had helped he would grin, "I'm glad it did," he responds, quieting afterwards. He would gaze back into her brown eyes, gently stroking his thumb over her hand, so he would notice when her eyes strayed once again. He would swallow thickly and watch her for several moments, longing filling his chest. After what seemed like forever he would softly clear his throat, "I'm trying to be a gentleman, trying not to force myself onto you, but it's hard when you act as if you want to kiss me," he would say quietly to her, his voice gruff as if it had rumbled up from deep in his chest, "It's not fair."

Ranait O'Halloran
The relief on her face when he said that he'd never force her into his bed was enough that it might be amusing. "Well, I can understand you wanting heirs, but I'm glad to hear you said that you would never force me," she said softly. A blush settled across her cheeks when he suggested that he should talk to her brother. "He's my brother. I think it's his job to be cruel to me," she said with a nervous laugh. "I mean, it would make me feel better to see him brought down a few notches. But I think that's mostly because he's always been extremely arrogant. He likes to think that because he was the first born son of five, he's something special," she said on a sigh. Although, the fact that she had five brothers was a pretty good indicator that her genes would likely produce male children. Of course, this wasn't something that she knew about.
She couldn't help but smile at his comment about shirts being replaceable, but her not being. Of course it only served to cause her blush to deepen, but hey. When he went quiet and seemed to look at her as though there was some sort of inner struggle he was facing because of her she frowned. Her frown deepened and the blush on her cheeks darkened when he said that he was trying to be a gentleman but it was hard to do when she kept acting like she wanted to kiss him. She couldn't help it really. That one little kiss that he'd given her had left her wanting more. This was likely because it had been extremely brief, but she couldn't deny the fact that it had been extremely pleasant. Actually, it had probably been one of the most pleasant experiences that she'd had in a long time. She bit her lower lip and turned her head to the side, dropping it in embarrassment, though she did glance sideways at him and her gaze landed on his lips yet again. "I'm not a liar, and so I can't say that I wouldn't let you if you tried," she said softly. "For that matter, I would very likely kiss you back."

When she talked about her brother he would shake his head, anger flashing in his eyes, "No, Ranait. He is your brother, he should protect you not torment you," he would say, his words not harboring any of the anger he felt towards the man, but it was definitely stern. That was that, and he wouldn't hear anymore about how her brother was supposed to be cruel to her. Honestly he couldn't believe that anybody had allowed it to go on; if he ever witnessed the man being cruel to his sister, or any other woman for that matter, he would beat him senseless. He would forget about his frustrations towards the brother when the conversation turned to other topics, though.
When she bit her bottom lip before turning her head and bowing it he would feel like growling, the temptation to kiss her almost too much to take. Upon hearing her speak he would groan, retracting his hands in order to rub them roughly over his face before suddenly lurching up, sliding his hand around to cradle her head while his other cupped her cheek, "You, m'lady, are just too hard to resist," he would rumble before leaning in and pressing a very gentle but brief kiss to her lips, "Not fair," he would murmur again when the kiss ended, his eyes closing tightly for a moment before he was pressing his lips to her's once again. He felt as if he'd adequately warned her, so he wouldn't feel bad about kissing her now. Not even in the slightest.

Ranait O'Halloran
The comment that he made about her brother was something she wasn't sure if she agreed with, but she kept her opinion to herself. Neither of her older brothers had been overly protective of her. Alasdair had out-right tormented her for most of her life. Blain, on the other hand, just had a bad habit of saying the wrong things at the wrong times. Not to mention the fact that Blain wasn't exactly a large man, so he'd been easy for her to mow over and pummel. Al wasn't tall, but he was made of sturdier stuff than Blain, so it was rare for Renny to actually get the drop on him the way she had the previous night when he'd been a jerk. Her younger brothers were a variety of tall and lanky and short and stocky, but none of them were really old enough to tell how they would fully mature.
All thoughts of her brothers were wiped from her head when he released a groan that sounded pained. She turned her head back to him at about the same time that one of his hands cradled her neck and the other cupped her cheek. The kiss that he placed on her lips was soft, but very brief and she almost pouted. Almost because shortly after that kiss she found his lips on hers again and this time the kiss was much more satisfying. Her eyes fluttered closed and she found that her hands were gripping his arms, though she wasn't sure if it was to hold him where he was or to keep herself stationary. Surely she should be either floating away or melting into the couch at any given moment. When the kiss finally ended because they both needed to breathe her face was flushed, but she definitely felt better. Slowly her eyes fluttered back open and she couldn't help but smile up at him, even though she had no idea what to say.

He couldn't believe how amazing it felt to kiss this woman. He'd only known about her for a few days, though he'd only actually known her for a handful of hours. It was amazing how such little time could give way to something so spectacular. His surprise wasn't just the fact that she had been completely innocent before today, but because every fiber of his being seemed to buzz to life when he kissed her. When the kiss finally ended he would rest his forehead against Ranait's, keeping his eyes closed for several moments. He was breathing a bit heavily, trying to catch the breath that she had taken away though he wouldn't move away from her. He had a feeling that if he moved away he would end up right where he currently was again.
After he was able to catch his breath he would open his eyes, smiling at the woman, "Do you hate me yet?" he would ask jokingly, though he couldn't help but wonder if she might. He had just suddenly waltzed in on her life and not only stole her future, but her first kiss as well. He knew that it was the way things were supposed to go; women weren't supposed to even kiss a man before she got engaged or married to the man she'd been betrothed to but he also knew that nobody followed that rule. Before he would finally move he would press another brief kiss to the woman's lips, moving to sit beside her afterwards. He would pull her up against his side as he sat there, one arm draped over her shoulders while the other gently grabbed her hand again.

Ranait O'Halloran
The kiss, and then those moments afterwards where he just rested his forehead against her had completely melted her. She was like putty in his hands and he probably could have done a lot more than just kiss her. She didn't know what was going on with her, but every hormone in her body had revved to life with that one kiss and she felt like every molecule of her body was electrified. Who knew a simple kiss could do that? She definitely hadn't. Not that his kiss earlier hadn't been amazing, but this one. This one had actually lasted long enough to have a bigger effect than just leaving her to want another kiss. This one had made her breathe heavily after it was over and caused all sorts of butterflies to flit about in her stomach. She was completely stunned, but in a good way. If his kisses were that amazing she had reason to believe that she could spent the rest of her life blissfully happy married to this man.
"Hate you?" she asked and blinked at him in surprise. How could she possibly hate him? Sure there might be a reason to someone else, like the fact that she didn't really have a choice in the marriage thing, but at this point? She really wasn't sure she minded so much the idea of being betrothed to him. That kiss had seriously done a number on her. Her head still felt like it was spinning, and I assure you that none of it had to do with the fact that she'd whacked her head not that long ago. "I'm pretty sure that after a kiss like that there aren't many women alive who could hate you, sire," she said with a blush. When he pressed his lips against hers again she kissed him back softly and smiled when he pulled her against him as he settled onto the couch. Acting on instinct alone she settled her head against his shoulder and listened to the steady rhythm of his heart beating. Funny that his heart seemed to be beating normally when she swore hers was still pounding in her chest loud enough that it could probably be heard miles away.
She found, honestly, that she rather enjoyed having her head resting against his shoulder. This way his smell permeated her senses and she didn't have to feel weird about wanting to bury her nose against his shoulder and just smell him. She could kind of do it a little more discreetly, and that was fine with her. Who knew that something as simple as the way a man smelled could be so pleasing? She definitely hadn't ever noticed the way a man smelled before him. It confused her a bit, honestly, and a slight frown curved her lips as she realized that so much had happened to her when he'd kissed her that was honestly just confusing the crap out of her. She'd heard women talk about men forcing themselves on other women and had seen people kiss, but she'd never heard anyone talk about the way they reacted to a man kissing them. She'd seen some different reactions. Some women had slapped the man who had kissed them, some had kissed back, others had even gotten handsy, though she hadn't really understood that concept. But none of the women that she'd seen kiss men had seemed to react to the kiss the way she had. Maybe it was because she'd never seen someone who had been kissed for the first time in their life? A sigh drifted from her lips and it was partial contentment as she cuddled against his side, but it was also partially from the confusion that railed through her head. She seriously needed to talk to someone about this.

Upon hearing the woman's question he would nod, refraining from letting out a laugh. It seemed like she had taken his question more seriously than it was meant, though he wouldn't correct her; he wanted to hear what her answer might be. When she said that there weren't many woman who could hate him after a kiss like that he would laugh, "I'll have to keep that it mind. Especially if I'm going to get the Queen to approve our marriage," he would laugh, obviously joking. It did do his pride some good to hear her say that, though; he'd been afraid that Ranait wouldn't like to kiss him. It also made him a little less insecure about the marriage, figuring that she wasn't unhappy about it.
When she rested her head on his shoulder and cuddled into him he would smile, letting his arm drop from her shoulders to wrap around her back in a more intimate gesture. He would let his hand rest on her side as he shifted slightly to lay his head against the top of her's, careful to avoid the spot that she had hit. He wasn't in the right position to catch the frown on her face, though when she sighed he would notice, "My philosopher once told me that repressing one's thoughts, or emotions, was bad for the soul," he would murmur, gently squeezing the hand that he was holding. "What's on your mind?" he asked, wanting her to be comfortable enough to share her thoughts with him, no matter what they were. He wanted to know what she was feeling, realizing that if he didn't that their relationship just wouldn't work like he wanted it to and right now he was absolutely oblivious as to what might be running through her mind.

Ranait O'Halloran
She'd made a face at his crude comment and was tempted to stick her tongue out at him, but part of her knew that he was joking and the whole cuddling thing kept her calm. Not to mention she was extremely distracted by all of this. When he spoke again she lifted her gaze to look up at his face and couldn't help but smile in response to his comment. However she wasn't sure that this was something that she should be discussing with him. Would he know how to answer her? Worse. Would he think she was stupid because she felt so confused by all of this? She bit her lip as she considered how to answer him, but in the end she was nothing if not honest, and so she spoke what was on her mind. "I guess I'm just confused," she began tentatively. "I've seen other people kiss before, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone react the way that I felt," she said with a frown. "Maybe it's a first kiss kind of thing, but I don't know."
She sighed and ducked her head in embarrassment again. "I've heard people talk about kissing before, but they never said that it was going to be like that," she admitted with a frown. She wasn't sure if she should explain what she meant by telling him how it made her feel, but then, Renny wasn't exactly the type of person to leave details out, so she continued by explaining. "I guess the best way to describe it is I felt like I was surely going to float away at any second," she giggled, realizing how ridiculous that sounded. "And, even though I knew that I needed to breath, I didn't want the kiss to end. And then there were other things. Like I wanted more than just a kiss, but I honestly don't know what," she said with a frown. She knew how her body had reacted, but it all felt so weird and foreign to her and there were some parts of it that she was pretty sure she shouldn't discuss with him. About the only one that she'd feel comfortable talking about that sort of thing to would be the queen; maybe her mother, but she hadn't had the sort of relationship with her mother that she had with the queen.

When she looked up and smiled at him he could actually feel his heart melting. It both scared him and filled him with wonder; the only other person that could make his heart melt was his daughter and that was a completely different kind of melting. Which also brought up another worry; how would the woman feel when she found out that he had a child from his previous marriage? He knew many woman that would go ape shit over it, but he also knew of some that would be accepting of it. He wasn't sure how Ranait would react but he had a feeling that while she wouldn't be angry, she wouldn't necessarily be happy about it.
He would rein in his thoughts when she finally spoke, saying that she was confused before going on to explain. A grin would split his lips and he would gently squeeze her hand again, "No, it's a good kiss kind of thing," he would assure her, though he honestly wouldn't really know; he'd never kissed a woman that had made him feel like that before Ranait,"Believe me, I did NOT feel that way with my first kiss," he would laugh softly. When she sighed and ducked her head he would shake his own, though he was glad that she was being honest despite feeling so embarrassed, "That's because there are no words that could accurately describe the way one feels during a perfect kiss," he would admit, tugging her just a bit closer with the arm around her back. When she said that she felt as if she was going to float away at any second he would laugh softly, "Really? How strange. I felt the same way," he would say, his tone light and happy.
When she went on to say that had wanted to continue kissing him despite the fact that she needed to breathe, and that the kiss had made her want more but she didn't know what he would nod. He knew what she was talking about, he just didn't know how to appropriately describe what he felt she had been craving. After a few moments he would attempt to explain, "I think that... you wanted more intimacy," he would murmur, "Which is completely normal. I know because I wanted more as well but...I'm not about to take advantage of you," he would murmur, shifting to gently kiss her forehead. He had this distinct feeling that he was falling. Where, he couldn't quite say but the sensation was there nonetheless.
After a short pause of silence he would speak again, "Don't be afraid to share your thoughts with me. I will try my hardest to never belittle you for them," he would promise her, letting go of her hand in order to reach up and gently stroke her face, "You won't ever be punished for it either. I want you to feel comfortable with me," he would admit, his voice rather gruff as he attempted to keep from sounding like he was begging her.

Ranait O'Halloran
She definitely felt a lot better when he explained things to her, even though the explanation was a pretty generic one. "Then I guess I got lucky that my first kiss was from you," she said with a soft giggle in response to his comment about his first kiss definitely not having been like that. When he said that he felt the same way when they kissed she blinked and looked up at him. For a fraction of a second she almost didn't believe him, but the honesty on his face and the fact that he just struck her as the type that didn't lie about that sort of thing stole that disbelief from her. For whatever reason that statement made her even happier than she already was and when he pulled her closer she couldn't help but nuzzle against his shoulder a little bit. She glanced up at him again when he said that what she wanted was more intimacy. A frown settled across her face because she wasn't really sure what he meant by that. And then it hit her. Oh. Wait. That was something people actually wanted? Head tilt.
Those thoughts drifted from her head when he spoke again, encouraging her to share her thoughts with him. She smiled and nodded. "Thank you," she said softly. Because, honestly, that was one of the best things that he could tell her. Especially as a man that she was betrothed to. She'd seen a lot of women punished for speaking their mind, and she could definitely be a bit opinionated herself from time to time. Not to mention the fact that talking about things was just part of her nature. She didn't talk about things that other women did; like gossip and such, but she did enjoy an actual conversation, and learning was one of her favorite things to do. The whole learning thing was probably the only reason she'd let him coax her into telling him what had been on her mind. It was all so foreign to her and she didn't know anything about it, so having the opportunity to have something like that explained to her had gotten her to talk about it, even if she had been a bit embarrassed to do so.

Alpin couldn’t help but laugh when she says that she got lucky that her first kiss was from him, “Well, hopefully I’ll be the first and last person that you kiss,” he would say, half-joking. He meant it to be funny, though as of right now he knew that it would kill him to see her kissing anybody else. When she frowned upon hearing him say that what she’d wanted was more intimacy he would frown as well, the frown deepening when she tilted her head, “What is it?” he would ask softly, reaching out to gently tip her chin up so that she was looking at him again. He wondered if he had completely missed the mark on that one, and felt kind of embarrassed. He’d just admitted to wanting the woman, and if he had been wrong about her wanting the same then he would feel like the biggest idiot.
When she thanked him he would smile, shifting to gently kiss her cheek, “There is no need to thank me, Ranait,” he would murmur softly, “It isn’t something that you should have to thank me for,” he would continue, leaning his forehead against her temple. He really wished that she didn’t have all of these negative expectations about being married, though he would do his best to alleviate her of them. He couldn’t imagine the things that she’d heard the ladies at court talking about but he was pretty sure that she had heard all of the horror stories, instead of the love stories. “I can promise you now that I will never strike you,” he would whisper, “And I will try not to control you,” he added, his forehead still pressed against her temple and his lips moving just inches away from her ear.

Ranait O'Halloran
When he tilted her chin so that she was looking up at him and asked what it was she frowned a bit. "I just..I guess I didn't realize that sort of intimacy was normal to want," she said with a frown. She'd heard the phrase "good lover" before or "good in bed," but she hadn't really caught on to the meaning. Funny. As well read as she is you'd think that she'd at least know what some of these things mean, but she didn't typically read about that sort of thing. She frowned as she thought about that. There were some women who had mentioned what they called 'love stories' that were written in books and she wondered if that was something that she might ought to look in to. "I think," she said with a giggle as she thought about that. "That maybe I need to read some more." She had no idea if he would catch on to what she was talking about, but the blush settled across her cheeks anyway.
She smiled at his promises and turned her head to press an affectionate kiss to his nose. "That may be the case, but you alleviated a lot of fear with those promises," she assured him. Her thoughts shifted and she suddenly had the urge to go search through the queen's library and see if she could find one of those books that she'd heard about. She, of course, had no idea what kind of shock she was in for once she actually started to read them. But, then, that's what happens with the innocent. She had seen the lyrics to the song that were in the book that Esras had picked out the other day, but the few dirty words that she'd understood had made her blush and not want to read farther in to it. Something told her that if she was going to read one of those books that it was probably something she'd be better off doing in privacy, so she resisted the urge to look for one of them for the time being. Instead she decided to continue on the subject of marriage. "The times I've heard anything about marriage they came from people who were unhappy in their marriages. My parents never much talked about theirs. I think, for a while, they were content, but towards the end; even when I only saw them once in a while, they seemed less happy with each other," she said with a frown. "I know all marriages can't be that bad, but I've never known one that was both loving and truly happy. My parents weren't, I don't think, ever truly happy, and that might not be a bad thing...But I've always liked to entertain the hope that I might be able to have a truly happy marriage. If not one based in love, then at least one based in friendship," she said with a frown. "I know some people consider that to be a childish notion, but," she shrugged.

Alasdair O'Halloran
He strode down the palace halls like he owned the place. He might be just a Marquess, but he'd always been far too arrogant for his own good, and now that he was a Marquess instead of a Baron...yeah. He was here for a reason, though, mostly just to pester his sister and taunt her about having to marry the duke. Or at least that was what he thought he was here for. He had no idea that he was about to walk into the queen's sitting room and find the two of them cuddled up on the couch. So, needless to say when the servant opened the door for him he about shit a brick at the sight of them cuddling on the couch. "Ranait O'Halloran!" he shouted at her, completely in shock and not really knowing what else to say. He was kind of pissed because she had this giddy look on her face and he definitely didn't want her to be happy, especially not with the duke!
"Get your little whore ass off of that couch," he growled at his sister before shifting his attention to the duke. "And you! How dare you take advantage of my little sister?! You might be her betrothed, but that does NOT give you the excuse to take advantage of her," he growled. He was pissed, but there was a part of him that wasn't sure he actually believed that the Duke had taken advantage of his little sister. The man was all about honor and shit after all, but the fact that Renny seemed perfectly happy to cuddle up to the man after she'd attacked him over the marriage the previous day? Oh hell no. That wasn't going to fly with him. He wasn't above accusations without proof if it meant pissing off his little sister. "How would you feel if it was your daughter that someone was taking advantage of?" he all but yelled at Alpin.

Alpin would frown when she said that she didn’t know that it was something that people wanted, “Oh…yes, it is,” he would laugh softly, feeling even more embarrassed about it. When she commented that she should read more he would stare at her for a moment before a devilish grin would take place on his face, “Or could you just wait for the real thing. Books aren’t as good,” he would tease her, though he did kind of mean it.
When she leaned in and gently kissed his nose he would absolutely beam, “I’m glad that I can,” he would murmur honestly, waiting quietly as she seemed to be thinking about something. When she finally spoke he would nod slightly, having figured that it had been the case. He would remain quiet until she finished speaking, only to shift forward and gently kiss her lips again, “I will do anything to make you happy, Ranait. I was married before and that relationship…it just wasn’t good. I don’t want to be stuck in something like that again,” he would admit, his tone laced with a sort of ache that revealed that he wasn’t always cool and calm, “So, no. It’s not a childish notion,” he would murmur softly.
He was just reaching up to brush his fingers over her cheek again when he heard the door opening, actually kind of happy to see her brother. He wanted to thank the man, but before he could even opening his mouth the man was yelling Ranait’s name. It caused anger to rise up in his chest and he would shift slightly away from the woman, placing his hands on either side of him. He stared at the man, his eyes narrowed and his lips pursed, waiting for him to say something else. He wasn’t disappointed, though, as the very next thing out of his mouth caused his anger to spike drastically, “You have NO right!” he would boom, lurching up off of the couch, and taking a step closer to the man. He hardly heard the rest, though the sound of his voice only served to heighten his anger, and when he was close enough to the Marquess the first thing he would do was take a swing at him. The satisfying feeling of his fist colliding with Alasdair’s face wasn’t enough, though, and he would shove the man back, only to step up on him again, bowing up on the younger man as a growl falls from his lips, “You will NEVER talk to her that way again,” he would spit out, reaching to grab the boy by the front of his shirt with one hand and shake him sharply, “DO YOU HEAR ME?!” he would yell in the man’s face. “She is not yours,” he would declare. He was trying not to be as violent towards Alasdair as he would have liked, but it was extremely difficult.

Ranait O'Halloran
She would blush when he mentioned just waiting for the real thing. "I was only going to read so I might know what to expect," she said in a tone so quiet it would make nearly anyone have to strain to hear what she had to say. When he kissed her again she practically melted and couldn't help but kiss him back. Although a part of her had known that it was a very big possibility that he had been married before, for some reason a flash of jealousy went through her. It was odd, really, and she didn't let it show, but it was something that she felt none-the-less. She nodded to his statement about not wanting to be stuck in a marriage like that again and for a brief moment fear flashed through her eyes. She was completely besotted with this man, and he'd admitted to feeling the same way that she had when he'd kissed her, but what if he ended up not liking her after all?
When her brother burst into the room and yelled at her she recoiled automatically from the duke. It wasn't that she was ashamed of the fact that she'd been cuddled up to him, so much as the fact that her brother was throwing around accusations like that. A growl rose in her throat when he turned his attention from her to the duke and she immediately jumped up from the couch. She was about to attack her brother and defend the other man, but Alpin had already beat her to it, and damn had he moved fast! About all she could do was stand there with her mouth hanging open as she watched him punch her brother in the face and then proceed to tell him that he wouldn't talk about her that way and that she was not his. Part of her wanted to scream in horror; the little sister part that felt like she should be doing something. The rest of her? It wanted to cheer Alpin on.
She snapped her mouth closed and squared her shoulders before clearing her throat and stepping forward. She laid a gentle hand on Alpin's shoulder before she walked around him so that she was face-to-face with her brother. "Part of me wants to apologize, but you really deserved that. How dare you accuse him of doing something without having any proof? Just because you don't have any integrity does not mean that he doesn't," she said with a frown. "As for me being a whore, even if I had slept with the man I'd still be less of one than you," she growled at him. "All I can say, other than that, is be glad that he got to you before I did, dear brother," she said in a tone that was entirely too sweet. Her attention turned back to the duke and she dipped him a curtsy. "Thank you for defending my honor, my Lord," she said to him in a sincere tone. "But I can assure you that nothing that my brother says about me has an effect on me. He wouldn't dare to spread rumors about me because it would put a stain on his name just as much as it would mine. He's too self-centered to say anything against me, but I wish that I would have moved faster than you, because I know he isn't above tarnishing anyone else's reputation with or without proof," she said on a sigh. "I apologize for my brother," she said softly a she ducked her head, feeling certain that Alasdair's actions would have a negative effect on how the duke saw her.
She was used to that, truth be told, and hated that other people thought poorly of her more often than not because of her older brother. She wasn't the only younger sibling of his that his words, actions, and reputation effected, but it seemed to come down on her more because she was a woman. They all expected her to be the same way. Likely because a lot of women were that way, but she wasn't. She would never accuse someone of something without proof that they had done it. Jumping to conclusions like that just wasn't who she was.
