Esras would frown when she asked why he was being so nice to her, and went rambling on about how he didn’t even know her, and she had beaten up her asshole brother and so on. He would merely shake his head and reach out to gently brush his thumb beneath her eyes, catching a few tears that she had failed to dry away, “Because…you’re an angel. And Knights are supposed to protect angels,” he would say softly, “Even if it means protecting them from bad feelings, or their not so nice brothers,” he would say with a shrug before sighing softly and taking a step away from her. He figured he must seem rather creepy to the lady, but he was just trying to do what he felt was right; she’d been so distraught over her brother that it only seemed natural that he would stick up for her and then try to comfort her.
When the Queen appeared and called out Renny’s name sternly before yelling at her he would turn around, his brows furrowing as he stares at her for a moment before bowing curtly and straightening. “Your majesty, I’m sorry if you don’t want me to speak but…” he would trail off, grimacing, “Her brother, wasn’t very kind to her. He threatened her,” he would say with a nod, letting his gaze flick to Renny and then back to the Queen. It wasn’t necessarily a lie- the phrase “This isn’t over” did seem kind of like a threat to him. “And, he spoke indecently to her about the…the carnal acts of marriage,” he would stutter, his cheeks turning a faint pink color, “I don’t believe that he realized who he was, or who he was talking to,” he would comment, a frown tugging down the corners of his lips. “You can…tell your nobles that the commotion was…an idiotic knight defending the Lady-in-waiting when she didn’t need defending,” he would tell her, forcing a smile onto his face.

Ranait O'Halloran
She sighed softly as he wiped away the tears that she'd missed. His words were extremely sweet and she couldn't help but smile at him, despite the fact that she'd been crying just minutes before. She dipped a curtsy to him, not really sure how to respond to him, but wanting to show his words were appreciated none-the-less. "Thank you," she whispered, but the whisper was drowned out by the queen's voice and she suddenly found that she felt horrible for what she'd done. She turned and dipped a curtsy to the queen, though it definitely didn't look elegant in her now stained up gown. It wasn't until that moment that she realized she'd split her right hand open while pummeling her brother, but she chose to ignore it for the moment while she addressed the queen. "Majesty," she started, but then Esras immediately jumped in to defend her.
She reached out and placed her bleeding hand on his arm and stepped forwards, dipping her head to the queen once again. "I did, for a moment, forget who I work for," she said on a soft sigh. "And I thoroughly and humbly apologize for any stain this may have on your name," she whispered in a very contrite tone. "My own name isn't a problem. He's my brother and if he lets this stain my name, it will stain his twice as bad. Alasdair is far too conceited to let such a thing happen," she mumbled softly. "I had a lapse in judgement, and for that I do apologize, but only to your majesty," she said, her tone a bit stronger than it was before. "My brother knowingly pushed me to the point that I would retaliate, and for that reason alone I will not apologize to him. He wanted me to react like this, and he knew that if he said what he did, especially shortly after pretty much telling me that he was not sorry that our father died. I regret that I didn't keep a hold on my anger, and I will accept whatever punishment you see fit, Majesty," she said as she dipped another curtsy. "But none of this was the fault of Esras. He may have stopped me, but it still would have happened eventually. I won't have him blamed for my actions," she said, though her tone was more pleading than demanding.

Moira looked at Esras and looked away for a moment, like as if she was calmly understanding the happenings. Her stern gaze returned to him and then she listened to Ranait again. She was fair, and it showed as she let both speak. The fact that Esras gave her such a broken description sort of amused her in the sense the carnal acts of marriage crossed her mind and she gave a small crease to her beautiful brow. Looking at him with a bit of respect she shook her head. "Don't stick your neck out like that Esras. Someday you will need that neck of your's. Possibly even for my lady in waiting. Her actions are her own.. As are your's." She paused for a moment and she closed her eyes. Breathing out. "I am very well versed in the carnal issues in marriage. But not the kind you are considering."
As she listened to Ranait after when she stepped forward and curtseyed she gave her lady a once over. Sighing under her breath at the dress and her wound. Mostly her wound. As she began telling her what had happened and ensured that she wouldn't apologize to her brother. She watched her for a moment of silence. She was thinking. "I am sorry to hear about Marquess O'Halloran." She said softly to her Lady in Waiting. Frowning sharply. "As long as he will not blame you for beating him to a pulp then Ranait. Upon your punishments. You should know me better, I have had you as my lady in waiting for some time now and I will not ask you to take punishment besides your own embarrassments and the act of apologizing to whom you see fit. To be a Lady these days tends to be who is the prettiest and who is the most qualified. In my time. To be a lady insisted that even a Queen must show humility in every wrong she takes." Looking to the two and sighed. "Shall we get the silly woman looked at then Lord Kavanaugh?" She nudged her head towards the Queen's Rooms. "Get you in a good dress and patched up. I wouldn't want that getting infected. And maybe something sweet for the news of your father.."

Esras frowned when he felt Renny's hand on his arm, accompanied by a warm stickiness he could only identify as blood, "Oh my..." he would mutter softly before turning, gently capturing the lady's hand between his own before looking down to inspect it. When the Queen told him to not stick his neck out for the lady he would have to refrain from laughing, "Forgive me for being blunt, but...isn't that what Knights are supposed to do? Stick their necks out to help people?" he would ask, swallowing as he hoped that the Queen wouldn't take offense to his question. He would remain silent during the duration of Ranait’s speech to the Queen, not necessarily ignoring it, but more focused on her injured hand. It really bothered him, mostly because he had been the only knight here, and he took that on to mean that he was supposed to protect her. Even from herself.
He was distracted for a moment when the Queen told Renny that she wouldn’t punish her, which caused him to smile softly. He was glad that she hadn’t gotten into any trouble for what she had done, because he really would’ve felt bad about it because he knew that he could have stopped her if he wanted to. When the Queen asked him if they should get Ranait looked at he would blink, his brows furrowing as his gaze flicked from Renny’s hand to the Queen and back again. When she went on to tell Renny that she would be gotten a good dress and such he would frown slightly, “Well…I suppose she does need to be taken care of,” he would murmur, taking that to figure that she was excusing him; there was no need for him to be around while she was changing and whatnot, in fact he felt that it would be rather inappropriate. He hadn’t let go of her hand by then yet, so when he came to that conclusion he would glance once again down at her injured hand, his frown deepening as he bends his head down to gently press his lips against her hand before letting go and moving away.

Ranait O'Halloran
Ranait's attention shifted between Esras and the queen as they both spoke. "It's your duty to stick your neck out for people who are worth it," she said on a sigh when Esras asked if that wasn't what he was supposed to do as a knight. "I'm a woman. Not just that, the only title I have claim to is lady-in-waiting to the queen. Which, no offense," she said glancing to the queen. "Means that I'm supposed to be nothing more than a glorified servant. I mean. The queen does treat me better than that, but then again she has a heart of gold. She has to, otherwise she wouldn't be the woman that she is," she said softly. No, she wasn't trying to flatter the queen, merely speaking what she saw as the truth. She curtsied to the queen when she said she should get cleaned up, but when Esras lifted her hand to kiss it, her heart fluttered inside her chest and that familiar blush from earlier in the day spread across her cheeks. "It was nice to meet you, Lord Kavanagh," she said softly before turning her attention back to the queen.
And then it hit her. The queen. Of course! As the queen's lady-in-waiting, the queen herself had to approve of the marriage before it could happen. She would just have to figure out a way to convince the queen that this marriage wasn't a good idea. Of course, she knew nothing about the man, and it wasn't uncommon for girls her age to be forced to marry men much older than them, but she just couldn't. She'd rather be the wife of a farmer or some other lowly servant if it meant that she got to marry for love. She didn't care about her name or her station. She only cared that she was loved, loved the person she was going to marry, and was treated well. The wheels in her mind began turning as she tried to figure out a way to present something like this to the queen. She had no idea how to ask the queen to speak out against the marriage. Especially if the Duke was actually a decent man. "Majesty," she began as she followed the older woman back towards her chambers. "I know I shouldn't ask anything of you, especially not after what just happened. But, if the Duke isn't a suitable husband, would you speak out for me?" she asked in a very soft tone, her head hung down as she presented the question to Moira. Her heart raced in fear. Half fear that the queen would tell her that she had to marry whomever her brother chose, no matter what kind of man, and half in fear that her brother would find someway around the queen's disapproval. Also, partially in fear that the queen would approve of the man.

She calmly looked at Ranait and moved over to them and smiled to Esras. "You are right, but don't tell my husband you won a word battle with the Queen. Alright?" She smiled calmly and then looked down to Ranait and frowned for a bit. She bowed her head to the description of herself. A small smile happened on her lips. "A glorified and yet good servant. A good Queen can't be good without her servants." She looked up to Esras and then tilted her head a little slightly. "Please, if you wish to stay around and see to my lady in waiting after. You are always welcome in my part of the castle without previous consent. You have my honour for staying by Ranait's side during trivial matters. And you are allowed to come study whenever Ranait has time off." She said very kindly to him and smiled genuinely. A smile that would do a good husband's heart some good. However she didn't have one of those. So she only had time to pass this smile on in small doses to those who earned her trust.
As they began walking, she heard Ranait call her majesty and she looked down to her as they walked. Flipping her very long hair over her shoulder out of habbit. When she got to the door and she began asking her about speaking against the marriage she looked down to Ranait and frowned calmly. "Ranait, in these rooms you are welcome to talk to me about anything. I will see what I can do. I wouldn't want you put into my position. Now would I?" She'd smile and chuckle a little at herself. "Did you want me to bandage that after you get dressed? I know it's not that big but it's always the small cuts that get you." She pointed to her hand.

While they got her cleaned up the time went by quickly, though the sun had already started fading by the time they got inside. Eventually everyone would at least go to their separate chambers. Whether or not characters slept is entirely up to their players.

((OOC: The next day.))
Ranait O'Halloran
Renny had spent much of that morning working on trivial things and debating some way to get out of this marriage that her brother had thrown in her face the previous evening. There had to be some way that she could convince the queen that he wasn't a suitable husband, even if the queen could find no fault with him. She simply couldn't marry a man that she didn't know and was twice her age. There had to be a way around this, but she'd been racking her brain most of the morning and hadn't been able to come up with anything other than to hope with everything she had that the queen wouldn't approve. A sigh drifted from her lips as she wandered through the gardens. This was her sanctuary, even though it really belonged to the queen. The gardens were just the place to come to get away from the world and to take the time to try to really figure things out. While she was anywhere else she felt obligated to be doing some kind of work.
After a moment or two of simply wandering she found a large rock by the small fish pond that was in the center of the garden and walked over to sit down on it. When she was alone, this was her favorite part of the garden. She pulled her dress up to her knees, kicked her shoes off onto the rock, and allowed her feet to dangle in the water. A smile crossed her lips as she watched the fish dart around in the pond water, several of them coming up to suck at her toes as if they thought they were food. Fortunately none of the fish in this particular pond had teeth. That was probably the only reason she felt comfortable dangling her feet in the water. A contented sigh drifted from her lips as she lost herself in thought while watching the fish and occasionally wriggling her toes beneath the water to tease them.

Alpin had been wandering mindlessly through the Queen’s gardens, having been invited to meet her this morning, but she seemed to be missing. The door to her personal garden was open, so he had taken the opportunity to take a look, and had found himself lost in the beauty of nature. It had been quite some time since he had found time to wander through a garden, and he had to say that he had missed the practice. He used to take a book out to the gardens at his estate and remain there all day, reading to his heart’s content, but that had been over ten years ago, before he had been made a Duke. As he was walking he heard the faint hum of water and would follow the noise, knowing that he had to see it before he left the gardens. When he finally caught sight of the water he was distracted, though, as it seemed that somebody else was already at the water’s edge. A pretty young lady was sitting on a rock with her toes in the water, smiling rather prettily. He would approach quietly, trying to decide if it annoyed him that she wasn’t acting like a lady, though eventually he found he didn’t mind; the ladies of the court these days were usually off gossiping, and this one was merely sticking her toes in water- he couldn’t quite bring himself to mind that.
He would move closer, deciding on a whim to remove his shoes as well before shifting to sit beside her, though at an appropriate length away. He too, would let his feet dangle into the water before turning to look at her and offer one of his award winning smiles, “Hello,” he would say kindly before directing his gaze back towards the water, “A philosopher once told me that there was no better place to seek wisdom than in the midst of nature’s beauty,” he would murmur, half trying to charm her with his wits and half trying to strike up a conversation.

Ranait O'Halloran
She began to hum softly as she wiggled her toes in the water and lost herself in thought. Really, though, she wasn't focusing on trying to get out of the marriage that her brother was trying to force on her. Instead she was thinking about something, or rather someone, that she shouldn't have been. Her inward thoughts were mainly focused around Esras and how much fun it had been to study with him and get a decent conversation out of someone that was closer to her age and not the queen. Not that she didn't love the queen dearly, but sometimes it was nice to make a new friend. Friend. Hmm. Could she really count Esras as a friend? He'd been sweet enough. She smiled at the thought. He'd been a little more than just sweet, telling her that she was an angel, even after she'd pummeled the crap out of her brother right in front of him.
Her head snapped up and around when she heard the sound of a voice not far from her. She'd thought she was alone in the gardens. Her eyes widened slightly as she looked at the man who had pulled off his own shoes and chosen to dangle his feet in the water in much the same manner that she had. After the shock left her face it was replaced by a light blush and a soft smile. "Hello," she said sweetly. Though she could tell that he was well to do by the state of his clothing, she couldn't tell exactly who he was or what his station would be. She did, however, dip her head to him, much the way she would have curtsied had she been standing up. "I think, then, that this philosopher of yours was a very smart person," she responded to his comment about finding wisdom in nature.
Her attention turned from the man momentarily as she fidgeted with the bandage that was still wrapped around her hand from the day before. It would probably be smart to remove the bandage all together at some point in time that day. The wound had been a small one, anyway, and likely had stopped bleeding hours ago. She forced herself to stop fidgeting and turned her attention back to the random stranger who had seen fit to join her, though he could just as easily have chastised her for being un-lady-like and dangling her feet in the water like she was. "I would have to sat that more answers to life's dilemmas come to me when I'm surrounded by the peacefulness that is nature than when I'm anywhere else," she said softly.

He would nod in agreement when she said that his philosopher was a smart one, “I like to think so,” he would say, a smile still curving up the corners of his lips. He noticed the faint blush on her cheeks, but couldn’t guess why it might be there. Maybe she was embarrassed about not acting like a lady or something of that sort, though he wouldn’t ask her about it; it wouldn’t have been honorable. He had been gazing at her, so when she began to fidget with the bandage the smile that had graced his face would slip into a frown as he wondered why a lady would need a bandage on her hand. He was just about to ask about it when she spoke again, causing the smile to resurface on his face, “Indeed. Though, I haven’t taken the opportunity to walk in the beauty of nature for quite some time. Sadly, I just couldn’t find the time,” he would sigh softly, looking regretfully down at the water.
After a moment he would let his gaze return to the lady, “Though, I have found that the answers to life’s dilemmas can surface through wise counsel, hence why I know of such an intelligent philosopher,” he would murmur, not having to try hard to keep the conversation going. A cross between a smile and a grimace would pass over his face as he felt the fish beginning to go after his toes, wiggling them about in an attempt to get them to go away to no avail, “That is the weirdest sensation,” he would murmur softly, letting his gaze flick to the lady once again, “How can you bear it?” he would ask, his words followed by a deep, rumbling laughter.

Ranait O'Halloran
She smiled when he spoke again, finding that she rather enjoyed the sound of his voice. He seemed to be a rather pleasant man; one that she might be able to get along with. Though she doubted he'd have much interest in her. She could tell he was a good deal older than she was. A small frown tugged the corners of her lips when he said that he just couldn't find the time to enjoy nature much these days. She didn't know what she would do if she didn't make the time to come wander or sit in the queen's gardens from time to time. It seemed to her that this little sanctuary was the only thing that kept her sane most of the time. Of course, she really didn't get along with any of the other ladies of the court. She found no enjoyment in their gossip and giggling behind their hands at other people. "I'm sorry to hear that," she said sincerely. "I'm not sure I would know what to do with myself if I couldn't find some sort of time to enjoy nature, even if it was just a few moments here and there," she said softly.
When his laughter rang out, she found herself smiling again. The sound was quite pleasant, though very different from Esras's laughter. Nothing about this man was the same as Esras, and yet she found that he was pleasing to the eyes at the very least. But, then, this was an actual man. Esras might be nineteen, but he was still very boyish. Not that she minded that. He had a very sweet charm about him, but this man. This random stranger. He was very alluring to her. She didn't know what it was, or why she was attracted to him; not that he wasn't an attractive man, but she was. "I don't know. The sensation is weird, but I guess everyone experiences things differently," she said with a soft giggle. "I've kind of gotten used to it, and I'm honestly just thrilled that there aren't any fish with teeth in this pond," she said with an honest and open smile. She wiggled her toes in the water and several of the fish came darting over to her feet to suck at her toes, falling, as they always seemed to do, for the little 'trick' that she played to get them to come to her. She let her toes fall still under the water and after a moment or two the fish got bored since her toes were no longer moving. "I think, though, that they're mostly interested when you wiggle your toes," she said, though it was more of an off-hand remark and not really meant to be responded to.

When expressed her sympathy and then went on to say that she didn't know what she would do if she couldn't find time for nature he would reach up to brush his fingers swiftly through his hair, “Oh, I assure you, it is unfortunately easy to forget about the little things that make life worth living,” he would comment, his brows furrowing slightly as he tried to figure out why he had just said that to the lady though he didn't find himself regretting that he did. There was something inviting about her that just begged him to continue talking, which was rather intriguing to him because when he tried to converse with women he often got the feeling that they would rather be speaking to somebody else. Probably because he couldn't find it in himself to gossip; he had too much honor to do such a lowly thing.
Upon hearing her response to his question he would grin, wrinkling his nose in a playful manner, “That they do, but I can’t imagine why somebody would want to subject themselves to this experience, their perception slightly different or not,” he would say, though he didn't pull his toes from the water. Upon hearing her say that she was used to it he would tilt his head slightly to the side, peering at her as he wondered why that might be. She must be close to the Queen or maybe the King, to be able to wander the personal gardens often enough to get used to the fish. When she commented about wiggling her toes he would grin, though it was more genuine than the one he had offered to her earlier, “Well, I will keep that in mind,” he would murmur, wiggling his toes just to see if she was right. It seemed that she was, as the fish swarmed over to his feet and began their sucking. When she commented about being glad that there were no fish with teeth he would snicker, “I would have to agree with that, especially since you tricked me into wiggling my toes,” he would accuse her, though there was a certain quality to his deep voice that spoke of teasing.

Ranait O'Halloran
She frowned at his admittance of the fact that it was easy to forget to stop and enjoy the things that made life worth living. "That's unfortunate," she said softly. "Perhaps, then, my lord, you need some bigger things in your life that make it worth living, and then you could remember the little things," she said softly, though she wasn't sure how true that might be. "I might be wrong, though. I guess being my age and rather sheltered by first my parents and now the queen makes it easier for me to hold on to the hope that life will always be worth living," she admitted with a slight blush. She dropped her head and found herself fidgeting with the bandage on her hand once again. At least until he spoke again, and oh did she really enjoy the sound of his voice.
"Ah. Well. I hadn't really thought much about it, to be honest," she said on his comment about subjecting oneself to the experience of fish sucking on their toes. "I guess I really didn't think it would happen the first time I dipped my feet in the pond, and then when it did...The sensation was odd, almost like tickling, but it wasn't horrible to me," she said with a slight shrug. "I love the water and since this is really the only place where I can even dip my feet in it," she let her voice trail off. However when he made the remark about her tricking him into wiggling his toes, she tossed her head back and laughed, a genuine laugh. "If you did the opposite of what I told you, then the fault lies on your shoulders, sire. However I would be lying if I said that there wasn't at least a small part of me that was hoping you might wiggle your toes," she teased gently.
She didn't know why she was teasing him, except for the fact that she didn't have a clue who he was and for whatever reason teasing him seemed to be an easy thing. Not that he was fun to pick on or anything, but she felt at ease around him. She wasn't the ball of nerves that she'd been around Esras. Probably because this man was so much older than her and she knew he'd never be interested in anything more than this one passing conversation. She pulled her feet out of the water and inched closer to the edge of the rock, doing her best not to lose her balance. She tucked her feet up under her so that she was kind of squatting and reached a hand over the edge of the rock to drag her fingers lazily through the water. However, she had apparently misjudged the way that she was perched on the rock, because within a matter of a few seconds she found herself losing her balance and falling into the pond. Smooth, Renny. Really smooth.

When the lady said that perhaps he needed some bigger things in his life that made it worth living he would blink, staring at the woman as his heart began to thud forcefully in his chest. He felt then that this woman was absolutely remarkable, though he didn’t even know her name. When she commented that she might be wrong he would shake his head, “No, quite the opposite. You’re absolutely right,” he would murmur, his voice low though rather fierce, rumbling up from his chest. When she began to fidget with the bandage he wanted desperately to reach for her hand, though he would refuse to give into the wild notion that it would give him some sort of satisfaction.
When she continued speaking he would grin and shake his head, “No, not horrible at all. But it feels queer,” he would snicker. Upon hearing her say that there was a part of her that wished he would wiggle his toes he would grin, “I knew it,” he would say triumphantly, followed by that deep rumbling laughter. “I should’ve known as soon as you said it that it was your plan, though I don’t think knowing would have changed the outcome,” he would admit, shaking his head slightly. He watched as she pulled her feet out of the water before inching towards it and squatting, a smile teasing his lips as he tries to figure out what she might be doing, only to gasp when she suddenly tumbled into the water.
He would immediately move in after her, not even thinking as he scooped her up in his arms and carried her out of the water, holding her against his chest, “Are you alright?” he would ask, his brows furrowing as his gaze trained on her face, though he didn’t put her down. If she was hurt it would be ridiculous for him to put her down instead of rushing her inside to a physician.
