Ranait O'Halloran
She flushed when he finally entered the library after her, and for a moment she found that she felt bad. It seemed that he was a little less sure of himself than he had been when he'd first entered, and she thought that she might be at fault. When he settled at the table across from her she couldn't help the small smile that tugged at her lips and she found herself ducking her head again, that soft red blush settling across her cheeks once more. She wasn't usually like this; okay, she was a bit soft spoken and shy at first meeting, but normally she didn't blush like this and feel so..awkward. Normally she was pretty confident in herself, but for some reason she wasn't now. Actually, not for some reason, she knew that it was because she thought the young man was handsome, but she was really far too innocent. Flirting wasn't something that she knew how to do, nor was it something that she would recognize, so she was kind of just stuck sitting there blushing and trying not to make herself look stupid to a man who she couldn't stop starring at.
And yeah, if one actually paid attention and followed the direction of her eyes instead of her head, they'd easily be able to tell that she was starring at him. "History," she said softly in reply to his question on what she was studying. "Mostly recent from the creation of the four kingdoms to the most recent kings and queens before the ones we know now," she said in a slightly stronger tone, though it wasn't much louder. She bent her head and flipped through the book until she found the part of it that she was looking for. Her gaze scanned across the page as she began to read, though occasionally her gaze would flick up ever so slightly to catch a glimpse of the man across from her.

Esras grins upon hearing her answer, shifting to gently coax the bird off of his book before pulling it towards him, "I love history," he murmurs in response, letting his fingers brush lightly over the cover. "Have you studied anything before the creation of the four kingdoms?" he would ask with a tip of his head, gently ruffling the pages of his book while he waited upon her answer. He was still rather nervous, as exemplified by the tapping of his foot against the ground and the dancing of his gaze from book to Ranait and back again. Despite that he was rather relieved to find that they had a common interest; at least this way the studying might not be excruciatingly awkward as it currently was. Maybe they could delve into a conversation about history or some such, and he would no longer have to think about how she probably thought he was the most retarded person that she ever met. Honestly, he wasn't quite sure how to act around her; she was different than every other Lady of the Court that he had met- she was quiet and polite and she didn't succumb to his flirting like every other woman he had encountered. She also wasn't gossiping about how the Queen had fallen asleep on the couch like he knew any other lady in her position would be doing right now. This Ranait was definitely an intriguing individual.

Ranait O'Halloran
Her face lit up when he admitted to loving history. It was one of her favorite subjects because of all the differences in eras, and the fact that it was almost like reading a story more than it was reading about things that had actually happened. "Oh. Yes, actually, I have. I'm just currently studying the more recent parts of history," she said softly, still feeling a little too shy to say much. Though, that little snippet that she said right there was probably the most she'd said to him since his arrival at the queen's chambers. "I think it's interesting to note the differences between the different eras," she said with a faint smile as she scanned a few more lines in the book that she was reading. "Things used to be a lot different before the four kingdoms came about. Some things read like they were better, but there's also a lot of things that read like they were worse before the kingdoms," she said with a frown. She gave a small shrug and returned to the book that was in front of her, though she glanced at his book with mild interest. Since he'd brought it with him, there was no telling what might be in that book. The queen had an amazing library, but even Ranait, sheltered as she was, knew there were books aside from those within the castle walls.

Esras nods enthusiastically upon hearing her answer, his gaze flicking to the page that he had interrupted her reading. When she began talking about the different areas he would look back to her, leaning in slightly so that he was better able to hear her soft voice. "That's so very accurate," he'd agree with another nod of his head, "But, I find the differences between individual rulers more interesting. It's intriguing to me how one ruler can change things so drastically while still being able to call it the same political system," he'd say with a grin as he opens his own book, flipping immediately to the correct page and holding it out to her. "Like with the creators of the four kingdoms. You can guarantee that they never would have accepted a queen to rule without a husband for more than a few months, but now we have Queen Morgan in the South and yet we still think our four kingdoms to be exactly the way when they were first created," he would explain, pointing to the page of his book that highlighted the first rulers of the four kingdoms. The book that he was holding actually showcased every ruler since before the four kingdoms, and even afterward, speaking not so much about their reigns, but the individual rulers themselves and their beliefs and histories.

Ranait O'Halloran
She listened avidly to what he had to say, though her gaze remained on her book. When she looked up it was to find his head significantly closer to hers and that familiar blush settled across her cheeks. She leaned her head away slightly and looked down at the page that he had opened his book to. Her eyes scanned the page as she read and she nodded a little bit. "I know what you mean, but I do have to say that I don't think there's anything wrong with a woman ruling as a queen without a husband," she said softly. "Rulers change, and so do the rules that they play by from time to time, but it's all the same sort of system, isn't it? I find Queen Moira to be a lovely woman and queen, but just because there are subtle differences in the way she and King Cahir rule as compared to the way her sister rules the southern kingdom doesn't necessarily make it a completely different system. In most kingdoms, whether there are one to two monarchs or four, there's always someone who has more say in the way things are run. The king, in a pair of dual monarchs, usually has more say and sway than does the queen, but they're still both considered monarchs. Which, I find kind of funny when you consider that 'mon' usually indicates singular, but that's not the point. The point is that the kingdom is still really ruled by one person. Sometimes that one person isn't even the one who is recognized as the monarch, but someone who is using the king or queen as a means of appearances only," she frowned and paused in her words as she scanned the pages before her.
"Political beliefs and values change over time, but that doesn't mean that the system is so drastically, or entirely, different that it needs a new name. I think, reading in history, that that's one of the interesting things about politics. While some people fight the changes, it's all sort of been designed for change. If it was designed so that change wasn't meant to take place then either it wouldn't, or the change would be so entire that it would actually have to be considered a different political system," she paused and glanced over towards the queen who was asleep. "Maybe I'm wrong, and maybe you disagree with me, but I do hope that that it can be kept to a civil kind of disagreeing," she said sweetly before she dropped her head and resumed her own reading. She read for only a few more moments before she closed the book in front of her and stood as if she were going to put it away.

Esras laughs softly and shakes his head as she realizes that she misunderstood his intention, "No, no. There's is absolutely nothing wrong with a queen ruling without a king, and I absolutely agree with you. It's just so radically different," he would explain, though he would quiet afterwards to listen to her speak. He would lean his elbow against the table as he props his chin on his fist, watching Ranait as she argues circles around his theory about individuals rulers and how their entire political systems were different from one to the next. To say the least he was completely enraptured by the young woman; his eyes had turned into twin saucers and his lips were parted in awe. He couldn't believe what he was hearing out of this shy lady's mouth. When she was finished speaking he'd simply stare at her for a moment before lifting his head from his hand, a grin settling over his face, "You are..." he'd start before quickly shaking his head. "Excuse me for being blunt, but you are by far the most intelligent individual that I have had the honor of meeting," he'd practically gush, his eyes gleaming with excitement. Later he'd probably be horrified and utterly embarrassed by the way that he had responded, but right now he was too awed by the Lady-in-waiting to really think about it. "And people call ME smart, oh gods..." he'd say with a laugh and a shake of his head. When she stood he would leap from his chair, eager to see what book she might be choosing next. "What title are you looking for?" he asks, his brows raising as he takes the book from her, stepping around her and moving towards the collection, "I would be more than happy to find it for you," he'd say, pausing and looking back as he waits for her answer.

Ranait O'Halloran
She blushed, like deep crimson majorly obvious blush. His reaction was so completely opposite of what she'd been expecting that she was silenced for a brief moment, unsure how to respond to his reaction. "Thank you," she said and dipped a curtsy. "I'm sure I'm not the most intelligent person that you've met, though," she said on a soft giggle. When he leaped up from his seat she was a little startled by his sudden appearance beside her and, if it was possible, the blush on her cheeks darkened even more. She pushed the book that she held in her hands carefully back into the place that she had pulled it down from and frowned slightly at his question. "Well, I wasn't really looking for any book in particular. Sometimes I would rather scan through books that I don't know and see if they have more information, rather than read the same titles over and over again," she admitted a bit sheepishly. "This is one of only a handful of times that I've been in the Queen's personal library, but she has books in here that the other library in the palace doesn't, and they're so much more interesting to read than the common ones," she grinned. "I particularly enjoy reading the ones in Latin and languages, especially if I've read it's counterpart that's been translated. You find there are different ways to translate certain phrases, and some things may have been translated one way when they were actually meant to be the other way," she explained, though she wasn't sure why she shared that information with him.
She stepped to the side and scanned the shelves for a new title. It took a while of looking over the different books, but eventually she pulled down a book that was clearly written in Latin. "It also helps me remember my different languages when I read books like this," she admitted with a smile. While it was somewhat common for ladies of the court to be bi, or even multi-lingual, such wasn't always the case. She knew several women who believed that speaking and understanding foreign languages was a waste of time, but she thoroughly enjoyed learning a new language. It wasn't because she thought she would need to know the other languages, so much as it was because she just enjoyed being able to speak them, and being able to read books in the original language that they were written in. She toted the book, this one that was probably half her size, tucked against one hip that was slightly cocked, back to the table and laid it down as gently as possible. Unfortunately, due to the massive size of the book it made a slightly louder thump than she wanted it to. She cringed outwardly and glanced over to the queen, ready to apologize profusely if the accidental thump had awoken the woman.

Esras completely ignored her blush in favor of contradicting her, "No, you really are. I honestly can't think of another individuals that could hold a light to your intelligence," he says, being completely honest. His praise wasn't him flirting either; he had completely abandoned the idea when she hadn't reacted well to it when he'd first encountered her. When she said that she wasn't looking for any particular title he'd laugh softly and nod, "Of course, I should have expected that," he murmurs, moving to her side once again. As she looked he would listen intently to what she had to say, though he did kind of disagree with her take on foreign languages; he was absolutely horrendous at learning them, and viewed the process as the worst torture imaginable. When she pulled a rather large book down from the shelf he'd sort of gawk at her, not quite believing that she would actually sit through such a humongous book in a completely different language...but then hadn't he labeled her as the most intelligent person he'd met? "Well, if you're so interested in other languages, maybe you could help me find a way that isn't torture to learn one," he'd say with a soft laugh, though he wasn't joking about wanting the lady's help. He knew the extreme basics of several languages, but he could never advance far beyond that without wanting to fall on his own sword. When she lugged the book back to the table he'd follow, grinning at the sound that it made when it connected with the table. He'd quickly move to pull her chair out for her; ever the gentleman. After she was comfortably seated he would move to sit beside her, letting his gaze roam carefully over the cover of the book that she had selected.

Ranait O'Halloran
She laughed when he persisted with his conclusion of her intelligence. She hadn't really given much thought to whether or not she was overly intelligent, so it wasn't completely impossible that she was. However, she'd always thought of the queen as the most intelligent person that she knew, but then again, that might have to do with the fact that she really didn't talk to anyone else. Not that she didn't want to, but she was far to busy studying, being a lady-in-waiting to the queen, and being really shy when it came to meeting new people. Her complete innocence made it really hard for her to get along with very many other people in the castle, especially other ladies of the court. But then, she'd never really understood their constant giggling over men. Not that she hadn't found a few men attractive before, because she had, but she also found that there were vastly more interesting subjects than who was chasing after who. Maybe that was what had earned her such favor with the queen, but she would never claim such a thing without knowing for sure, and possibly not even then.
"Learning a new language really isn't all that hard, though I think the average tutor goes about it all the wrong ways. As babes we learn to speak before we learn to read and write, so it only makes sense that you should learn a new language the same way," she explained softly. "The easiest way to learn to speak a language is to repeat something someone says and then say the meaning of the word in your first tongue. Because the best way to learn a new language is to speak it, there are a lot more fun ways to learn it through repetition in speech than repetition in writing," she said with a giggle. "Mother used to have me sing songs in a foreign language, correcting me when I would mess up on a word, and then make me sing the verses that I had the most trouble with over and over again until I got them perfect. Then she would have me translate them and sing them so I would understand what they meant," she said with a smile. "It wasn't always easy though, because translating can be a lot trickier than you might think. There are words and phrases in this language that don't exist in others and vice versa. There are also phrases and words that have multiple meanings, which is why it's so easy to mistranslate things," she said with a small smile.

Esras listened avidly as she began to speak about the best ways to learn a new language, and he couldn't help but nod his head eagerly like an idiot. It made perfect sense to learn a new language that way, and he wondered why the tutors hadn't thought of that method yet. He found himself grinning every time Ranait giggled or laughed, her amusement contagious and honestly rather adorable. By the time she was finished speaking his cheeks ached from smiling so much, though he honestly couldn't stop if he tried, "So, are you going to help me?" he'd ask, though he figured he already knew the answer so instead of waiting there for her answer he would jump to his feet and stride towards the collection of books, pulling out one after the other until he found one in a different language that appeared to be filled with songs. He couldn't be certain though, so when he moved back to the table he would hand it over to her, "Songs like this?" he'd ask hopefully, looking for all the world like a child asking his mother for a piece of candy. Honestly, he was just hoping that it wasn't filled with poetry or children's songs or something of the sort; he didn't want to look like a complete idiot, though he even had to admit that he'd kind of been acting like one by drooling over her intelligence and whatnot. He would ignore that fact for now though, saving it for later when he could beat himself up over being a dolt in private.

Ranait O'Halloran
She blushed more when she noticed that he seemed to be hanging on to her every word. It was really weird to her that he would do such a thing, but she chose to attempt to ignore that fact as she continued her prattling about learning a different language. She couldn't help but giggle however when he asked if she would help him learn a new language. "Sure," she said with a grin. When he leaped up from his seat and went searching through books she just shook her head as she sat back, torn between watching the boyish expressions on his face as he searched and reading the book that she'd pulled from the shelves for that purpose. It seemed, however, that she was going to be stuck watching his face as he skimmed through several different books, because that was all she seemed to be able to do. Another giggle rose in her chest when he finally seemed to find what he was looking for and set the book down in front of her. She glanced down at the book and had to hand it to him that he seemed to be pretty adept at at least finding what he was looking for, even if he didn't know much more than the basics of any foreign language.
Her face lit up as she scanned the lyrics before her, but then a blush settled over her cheeks as she realized just what kind of lyrics they were. "Um. Maybe not quite this song?" she said in a hushed tone and flipped through the book, trying to find a different type of song. It seemed, however, that the entire book was filled with such lyrics, and the blush across her cheeks darkened even more. "Um. Maybe, actually, let me look for a different book," she said as she tried not to let out the embarrassed laugh that had built up in her chest. She scooted her chair back from the table, picked up the book that he had found, and returned it to the shelf. After a moment or two of thought she recalled a book title and skimmed through the proper area of the shelves until she spotted it. Pulling the book off the shelf she returned to the table and opened it to one of her favorite foreign songs. "This is probably one of the easier songs to learn in this language. It sounds a bit complicated to the untrained ear, but it's really easy once you learn the translation," she said with a smile.

Esras grins as he notices her face light up when she began to read the lyrics, only to frown as he noticed her blushing, and heard her say something about maybe not using that song before flipping rapidly through the rest of the pages. He would lean in to stare at the book as she flipped through it, trying to figure out what was wrong with the songs only to have her blush darken before she eventually got up and returned the book to the shelf. By that time he was frowning rather deeply, and as he watched her look for a different book he would sigh softly. Obviously there was something wrong with the lyrics. Maybe they weren't even lyrics at all? He'd probably picked up a novel or something. When she returned to the table he glance at the cover of the book, though it didn't give him any insight as to what might have been wrong with the last one. "So...didn't like my choice?" he asks with a tip of his head, embarrassed for his crappy choice but also wanting to know why it had been a crappy choice. He was kind of an odd person in that respect.
When she said that it was one of the easier songs to learn he would smile slightly, "Well, you've never tried to teach me a language before. I'm positive that soon enough you're going to regret agreeing to help me," he'd half-joke. He'd look down at the lyrics that she had chosen, though he honestly couldn't make much out of it and would let out a soft, somewhat nervous bout of laughter, "Well, are you going to sing it to me?" he'd ask, though his cheeks developed a pinkish color; he had never sounded so desperate when he asked a lady to sing for him before.

She giggled nervously when he asked about the book that he had chosen and her blush deepened even more. "Let's just say they weren't appropriate songs to be singing in court," she said with a giggle and more blushing. Her head canted slightly when he said what he did about her teaching him to sing, and then he asked her to sing to him and she had to giggle again. "Of course," she said brightly, forcing herself to focus on the lyrics instead of either on him or thoughts of the song book that he had chosen before she had taken it upon herself to find a different one. She cleared her throat before she began singing in Gaelic, which was a language that they would have both known if it weren't for the fact that times were already changing.
"You cant believe the historys real Come with me to the firelands You make me feel The risk of the night Stay with me in the firelands
Can you tell me If you love me Do you light fairies along the sky Can you give me Storms and sunshines Stay with me in the firelands
You make me feel My historys real Stay with me in the firelands You cant believe the risk of the night Come with me to the firelands
Can you tell me If you love me Do you light fairies along the skies? Can you give me Storms and sunshines Stay with me in the firelands."
She finished the song and blushed, even though it sounded as good to her ears in Gaelic as it did in English. She smiled faintly at him before she translated the lyrics into English and tried to get him to repeat after her in Gaelic. "Pay close attention to the way I pronounce the words," she explained to him with a smile. "And when you think you can repeat them, do so. Even if you get it wrong most likely you'll only need a few subtle corrections."

Esras couldn't help but laugh upon hearing her answer to his question, "Oh...wow. I'm so sorry," he'd say, a sheepish smile taking over his lips. He wondered briefly what exactly was in the songs despite getting a small hint by her saying that they weren't decent for court. He figured his curiosity would be sated sooner or later, so he would focus instead on the lesson at hand. Though, soon enough he wouldn't even remember what he had been thinking of, as the Lady-in-waiting began to sing. He would stare at her as she sang, complete awe settling over his face for the second time that day. When she finished singing he would continue to stare at her for a few moment before finally being able to gather his thoughts, "You..." he would say with a shake of his head, "You are an angel. It's official. I need to spread the word," he'd grin, though his eyes were still wide, giving him a sort of boyish charm.
He would quiet when she continued, translating the song into English before repeating herself in Gaelic and trying to get him to repeat after her, "Oh gosh...I am truly sorry for what you're about to experience," he'd joke, only to try to repeat the words after her like she had requested. He really was a good pupil, but he had the worst image of himself so even if he did okay pronouncing the words, he would think that he was butchering a language best left un-assaulted by him.

She'd grinned when he'd apologized for the book he'd picked out, but she hadn't really said anything in response to it. However, when he complimented her after she sang that familiar blush settled across her cheeks and she couldn't help but shake her head at his reaction. "I think you like to exaggerate," she said with a grin, but couldn't deny that she was pleased that he liked her voice. She shook her head when he insisted that he was going to screw up, and when he actually did really well for someone who was speaking it for the first time, she found herself rather impressed by the young man sitting across from her. "I also don't think you give yourself enough credit," she said with a giggle. "That was definitely the best first time attempt at a foreign language that I've ever heard," she said and lifted her hands to clap softly for his efforts. She wasn't being in the least sarcastic, and the sincerity of her words shined brightly on her face. "I'll admit that I hesitated to have you sing the song at first because I've only ever heard it song by women, but your voice is pleasant," she giggled.
It was nice to sit there with someone who was interested in the same things that she was, and having a conversation with someone other than the queen; someone closer to her age, was proving to be quite fun. It wasn't that she didn't enjoy her conversations with the queen, but Moira was much like an older sister, and sometimes a mother to her. She hadn't really made friends since being at court, and had found that it was rather not to her taste because of that, but now she wasn't sure she minded it so much. Renny said a few more words for him to repeat, giving the translation in English only after he repeated them properly in Gaelic. Then an idea struck her and she glanced around the library to note that the queen still seemed to be asleep. "Would you like to go for a walk?" she asked a bit sheepishly. "Mom always made me learn the basics to a new language on top of learning to sing in it at first," she paused for a moment before explaining further. "And I figured it might help to have something to associate the word with," she finished with a shrug.
