She'd excused herself from the room where Moira had Esras getting stitched up, using the excuse that she couldn't stand to watch it happen. It had been making her stomach roil. And she didn't particularly care for the idea of everyone watching her empty the contents of her stomach for the second time that day and yell at her for it. So instead she'd left. She'd stopped by Davan's rooms for a moment to check in on the girl and had found her playing happily with one of her care takers. She hadn't had the nerve to introduce herself to the girl, though. Mostly because she really didn't know how the girl would react to "Hey. I'm the lady that just married your daddy." Instead she'd flashed a smile at the care taker and ducked back out of the girl's room. Then she'd wandered the short distance to Alpin's chambers and slipped into the sitting room area. She'd ended up settling on the couch with a book, though she couldn't really seem to focus on it. Her brain seemed to still be having a hard time processing the day's events. Tears welled up in her eyes and she ended up putting the book on a table that was next to the couch. With a sigh she sank back into the couch, letting the sleeves of Alpin's shirt roll down a bit so she could just curl up into it.

Alpin had taken care of his business at Carnaghan as quickly as possible, though he had found himself waiting just a bit longer for a special project he had asked of the metal worker. As soon as he received it he was making his way back to court. Honestly, he felt bad for being gone at all, and just wanted to get to his wife and daughter. The only consolation he had was the item that he had crafted. When he finally arrived at the palace he wouldn't even speak to the stableboy that he had handed the reins off to, entirely too eager to get to Ranait to care. He wasn't sure where he might find her, though he figured that his rooms might be a good bet and would go there first. It seemed as if he was right, because when he entered he caught sight of the woman curled up on the couch, wearing his clothes once again. He would smile softly as he shuts the door quietly behind himself only to grin widely, "You still look good in my shirt," he would comment, watching her expectantly. He kind of figured she'd launch herself off the couch and tackle him or something; that's surely what he would do to her if she wasn't so small and fragile looking.

The events of the day had gotten to her finally. She'd let her emotions free finally, not having any clue that Alpin would be back from Carnaghan so soon. She'd curled up on the couch and just kind of let herself sob. Something she definitely wouldn't have done if she had expected him back this soon. When the door to his sitting room opened without a knock she jerked her head up and saw that it was her husband. Despite her tears she flashed him a smile and managed a soft laugh at his comment about her still looking good in his shirt. She wiped away the tears that had been streaming down her face and stood up. She crossed the room and when she got to him she wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug. Which should have made her feel better, but it just made her start crying again. The poor girl. Hell. Poor Alpin, too, for that matter. He was probably going to be extremely confused by her sobbing into his shirt. After a moment or two she managed to get a hold of herself and lifted one arm, wiggling it so that the shirt sleeve fell back from her hand and she could wipe the tears from her face again. "You have no idea how happy I am to see you," she said with a half laugh as she looked up at him and tried to put a smile on her face for his sake.

He didn't notice that she had been crying until she crossed the room and started to sob into his shirt. He would blink, a little shocked, though he would wrap his arms tightly around her and pull her close, "Shh it's okay," he would murmur softly, wondering why she was crying. Which was when he realized that she must have been crying when he came in; she'd wiped her eyes on his shirt and such. "What's wrong, love?" he would ask softly, his heart wrenching as he listens to her sob. When she leaned back to wipe her eyes once again he would look at her, his brows furrowing in concern at her words. Sure, he was ecstatic to see her as well, but not so much that he could justify crying over it. But she wasn't crying over that; she'd been crying before he'd shown up. "Why, what's wrong?" he would ask, reaching up with one hand to cup her cheek and tilt her head up slightly; making her look at him. He figured he would be more likely to get an answer from her that way. Honestly, he'd been hoping for a happier encounter as he had a gift for her, but he couldn't really be upset about it; he would just have to wait until he'd made her feel better before he gave it to her. He didn't want any ill emotions to get in the way of her reaction to the item.

When he'd wrapped his arms around her and whispered about it being okay was when she'd allowed herself to relax a little. She'd been waiting all day to hear someone say that to her. A shaky laugh erupted from her when he asked her what was wrong. "I've had a hell of a day," she said on a sigh. When he tilted her chin up she'd look at him and pretty much melt. She stood on her tip toes and pressed a kiss to his lips. "I love you," she said before she explained anything. "When you left this morning I wandered into the audience chamber because it's probably the prettiest room in the palace," she began. "I ran into a friend there; or more like he ran into me," she said with a frown, but continued. "The king showed up and he, apparently, didn't like the fact that I was pointedly ignoring him because he came over and threatened me in front of the friend and his uncle; both of whom happen to be knights," she paused and chewed on her lower lip for a moment debating if she should tell him what the king had threatened her with. "He basically threatened to rape me, but with prettier words," she said on a sigh. "That didn't sit well with my friend, and so he got irate with the king and...I don't remember who challenged who, but they dueled and...well..long story short the king is dead," she said on another sigh. She spared him the details of the fact that the sight of the king's dead body had made her empty the entire contents of her stomach on the floor of the audience chamber. "I fought with said friend when he yelled at me because I told him after he killed the king that I was married. Then he came to find me and apologize and the queen and I pretty much had to force him to see a physician because he got injured in the duel with the king. I couldn't stomach watching the physician stitch him up, so I came back here," she finished and shook her head. It felt good to get all of that out of her system.

When she said that she loved him he would smile, gently kissing her back, "I love you more," he would murmur softly. He would remain quiet while she told her story, though he tensed the second that she said the King had threatened her, and only grew more rigid as the story progressed. Honestly it made him really, really angry, but there wasn't anything he could do about it. "Who is this knight?" he would ask, his tone gruff though he wasn't thinking about harming him; he was actually thinking about offering him a position in his guard. Or rather, his wife's guard, "And where was your guard? I left one here for you," he'd say, now a bit agitated. Which made him think about her story again, "Why would this Knight kill his King for you? And why would you argue when you told him you were married?" he would ask, feeling jealously suddenly roar to life in his chest. He would drag her closer against him, wrapping his arms protectively around her, "I'm not leaving you alone again," he would vow, his deep voice rumbling as he clutches her to him.

She leaned against him, and when he asked who the knight was she frowned, but didn't hesitate to tell him. "His name is Esras Kavanagh," she said with another frown. "His uncle is Aeden McCoy," she said with a shrug. She had no idea if he would know the names any better than she did or not. "My guard was with Davan still. I hadn't returned to your chambers at all after seeing you off this morning," she said and suddenly felt like he was mad at her as he continued to fling questions at her. She stepped back a little bit and a blush settled over her cheeks when he asked questions about Esras. "I don't know. I mean. I think it might be possible that he was interested in me," she admitted, chewing on her lower lip for a moment. "He tends to call me an angel, so I guess that means he was," she said in an uncertain tone. When he said he wasn't leaving her alone again and all but crushed her against him she frowned slightly, but wrapped her arms around him in return. "I'm not a child, Alpin. I can handle myself," she said, a little bit of irritation slipping in to her tone. "Just because you men tend to over-react to things and think that horrible things are going to happen to me without actually figuring out the facts first," she said on a sigh. She pulled back from him a little bit and lifted her head to narrow her eyes at him. "You have to be able to make sure that things are running smoothly at Carnaghan while we're at the palace," she pointed out. "And I don't think Moira would much care for me running off as often as you'll need to."

Upon hearing her mention both of the knights' names he would grin, "Oh yes, Aeden is a good man," he would say, only to have the smile fall from his face upon hearing about how the knight's nephew must have been interested in her. Okay, so now he was REALLY jealous, "You...why would you let him flirt with you?" he would ask, though he honestly didn't care very much. He knew that his wife loved him, it was just the jealousy talking. When she spoke to him again he would frown, actually becoming agitated when she said that she wasn't a child and that he'd overreacted. When she pulled back from him he would let go of her and take a step back, his brows furrowing together, "Do you think I care about Carnaghan as much as I care about you? Seriously?" he would ask, his voice edged with anger, "And what if that knight hadn't been there, huh? The King wouldn't have been against raping you, and he would have merely ordered his men to help him if you struggled," he would bite out, his eyes flashing with both anger and fear as he thought of the possibility. He would take another step away and reach up to drag his fingers through his hair, trying to calm himself though he found it didn't work as he could only think of the hundreds of different things that could have happened to her while he was gone.

She frowned at his question about Esras flirting with her. "I hardly have control over his actions. And I met him before I even knew you existed," she said with a frown. "Moira brought him in as someone to study with me," she said and shook her head. However when he reacted to her irritation with anger she would step back again and try to shove down her own temper that threatened to flare up. "I never said that," she snapped, though she hadn't meant to. "I could have handled myself," she defended. "I grew up with five brothers and both of the ones that were older and my father taught me how to defend myself and disarm someone even if I don't have a weapon of my own," she growled. "I'm not the type to stand back and play the victim, Alpin. I'm also not as stupid as you seem to think I am," she said, her temper getting the better of her as she argued with him. "Fuck," she cursed as tears welled up in her eyes and she wiped at them angrily. "You know what? You can sleep by yourself tonight, husband," she growled at him before spinning on her heal and storming out of the room. She wiped angrily at the tears that fell down her cheeks again, but they wouldn't stop flowing. Why? Why did everyone think they had to fight with her today?

When she said that she could handle herself he would stare at her incredulously, his brows lifting as he tries to figure out how she could have won in a situation like that, "I understand you grew up with brothers, but none of them would have seriously hurt you! The King would have found as many men as he needed to help him with you," he would say, his voice raw with fear. He really wasn't trying to argue with her, she just didn't seem to understand the severity of what could have happened. When she said that she wasn't one to play the victim and that she wasn't as stupid as he thought she was he would frown, "I never said that you were stupid. In fact, I think you're one if the most intelligent women I know. Intelligent, but also head strong," he would say, only to feel guilt form in his chest when she cursed and wiped away her tears.
The guilt didn't last for very long, though, as she said that he could sleep by himself tonight and made for the door. Before she could reach the door he would grab her wrist, pulling her back though he was careful not to hurt her, "You can't do that! Just because you're upset with me doesn't mean you can just storm off. That's not how this marriage is going to be," he would say, hurt filling his eyes as he looks down at her. He couldn't believe she had tried to storm off, though honestly he really shouldn't have been surprised. She was so hard to predict that anything could happen. "I wasn't trying to put you down, but you have to realize how fucking terrifying it is to think that your wife could have been hurt because you weren't there to protect her."

"I know that they wouldn't ever have actually hurt me. But you seriously over estimate the king if you honestly believe he could have convinced any men to hold me down. The men in this kingdom are loyal to Moira," she growled. She snorted, a very un-lady-like action, at his comment about her being intelligent but head strong. "I wouldn't have survived at this court for this long if I wasn't at least a little bit head strong," she said through the tears that streamed down her face. Right now she was so mad that she couldn't think clearly. The last thing that she'd wanted was to fight with him. All she'd wanted to do was spend the rest of the night wrapped in his arms so that she could feel better about everything that had happened when he was gone. But apparently that wasn't going to happen. Or at least not the way that she had hoped it would.
When he grabbed her by the wrist she growled and spun around, lashing out with her free hand to break his hold on her. She cringed when she realized what she'd done, though. She hadn't even thought about what she was doing, just reacted on pure instinct. When he yelled at her about this not being how their marriage was going to be and she saw the hurt flash in his eyes she cringed again. "Fuck," she cursed again and wiped at the tears that streamed down her face. "I hate this," she growled through the tears. When he spoke again she shook her head. "You can't prevent every potential bump and bruise, Alpin. Shit happens, and if it's gong to happen you being around isn't going to do much good. If you really think that Cahir would have been able to use his men against me you can't possibly think he wouldn't have used them against you if he was really that intent on getting to me," she said, shaking her head as she wiped at the tears again. "I don't want to fight with you," she said, her tone almost desperate. "I've had enough fighting for one freaking day. I'm tired and this day just can't seem to go right," she said as she closed her eyes and covered her face with both of her hands before rubbing them over it in another attempt to wipe away her tears. "I'm so tired of being yelled at over shit I had no control over," she growled and stalked across the room to the couch. She flopped down on it with a sigh, figuring that if he wasn't going to let her leave she could at least sit down.
She leaned forward and rested her elbows on top of her knees, burring her face in her hands and sobbing as quietly as she could manage. The poor girl had just had enough suffering for one day, and she didn't have the energy to keep her day going in the direction that it was. "Please," she said on a sob. "Just. Enough with the yelling," she muttered into her hands.

He would cringe when she spun on him, immediately dropping her wrist and taking a step back. He would starec at her, a little hurt that she would round on him, and even more so that she thought she needed to. When she cursed again and said that she hated this he would take another step away from her, feeling his heart throb painfully as guilt resurfaced. When she said that he couldn't prevent every bump and bruise it was his turn to snort and be un-lady-like, "I can damn well try," he would say, feeling like a complete ass hole. When she went on to say that he wouldn't have been able to protect her had such a thing happened he would shake his head; maybe he wouldn't have, but at least he had guards and he could have tried.
Upon hearing her say that she didn't want to fight with him he would sigh, "I don't want to fight with you either," he'd say, frowning. He could only shake his head when she said that she'd had enough fighting for today, and that she was tired of getting yelled at. He would take a step closer to her, only to stop when uncertainty clouded his mind, "I'm sorry for yelling at you, I wasn't trying to be a prick," he would say. When she moved to sit down before beginning to sob he could feel his heart breaking, and couldn't help but move to sit beside her, wrapping his arms around her, "I'm sorry, love. I'm so sorry," he would whisper softly to her, hoping that she wouldn't grow angry at his close proximity.

She shook her head when he said he could damn well try. "It's pointless to try, is what I mean," she said. "Bumps and bruises are going to happen whether you want them to or not." When he said he was sorry for yelling at her she just shook her head. "It happens," was all she said in response. However when he came over to sit next to her and wrap his arms around her she leaned against him for a moment before crawling into his lap and resting her head on his shoulder. "I forgive you," she mumbled and was finally able to actually wipe the tears away. A soft sigh drifted from her lips as she wrapped her arms around him and just snuggled against him. Finally she was able to feel better. Probably because all she'd wanted for the majority of the day was to sit in his lap and snuggle up to him, especially given the horrible events of the day. "I love you," she muttered. "And I understand why you got upset, but nothing happened. Well; at least not anything too serious, to me," she sighed. "It did make me wish I'd just gone to Carnaghan with you, though. None of this would have happened if I wasn't being so stubborn about that," she admitted sheepishly.

When she crawled into his lap he would wrap his arms tightly around her, smiling a bit when she said that she forgave him. He brushed his fingers gently over her back when she snuggled against him, shifting to gently kiss the top of her head as he holds her against him. "I love you more," he murmured softly, gently squeezing her in his arms. Upon hearing her say that nothing had happened he would frown slightly, "I know, but the idea that something could have happened scares the shit out of me," he would admit, finally understanding why she had been so insistent about her brother before he'd left. Though, when she said that it had made her wish that she had just gone with him he would grin and shake his head, shifting to reach into his pocket before pulling out a small pouch, "If you had come I wouldn't have been able to get you this," he would murmur, handing it to her. He had gotten the metal worker to craft a small golden ring with a small diamond set into it; the stones were rather rare but he had managed to get his hands on one awhile ago. He figured he would keep the diamond to sell if he ever got into any financial trouble, but he felt as if it would be better used this way. He had been wanting to wait to give it to her until she was in a better mood, or until they were sharing a more intimate moment over something, but he figured that it would make her happy now and so he'd given it to her.

She'd smiled faintly when he said that the idea that something could have happened scared the shit out of him. Good, maybe he would understand the next time she said she was worried about something happening to him. She didn't put voice to that, however, not feeling up to it possibly turning into another argument. No. For now she would be content just curled up in his lap and having him hold her. However, when he said something about not having been able to get something for her if she'd gone with him she would frown. At least until he handed her a small gold ring with a diamond set into it. Her eyes went wide and she stared at the item for a moment or two. Carefully, so as not to hurt the ring, she took it from his hand and slipped it onto her finger. "Oh, Alpin," she muttered. "It's beautiful," she said and turned to beam at him. She wrapped both of her arms around him again and hugged him tightly before pressing a tender, but passionate kiss to his lips. She let the kiss linger for a while before pulling back to smile at him again. "Thank you," she said. Part of her felt bad accepting a gift like this, but she didn't want to hurt his feelings by not taking it.
