General Behavior: Ambrós is typically the silent type. Once in a while he will hold a conversation, but not very often. He does not like to talk about his past; though, and will avoid doing so by changing the subject. While he typically prefers to be alone, he can not stand complete silence, unless he is hunting. This often results in him holding muttered conversations with himself. That being said, he also does not like for there to be too much noise. When people yell, scream, and carry on, it tends to make him cringe and immediately go on the defensive. Many of his actions are those of someone who has had a difficult life. However, he hates the look of sympathy on people's faces when they learn about him. Which plays a big part in him avoiding the subject of his past. The other big factor is that he has learned to distrust people. Most of those he has trusted have betrayed him at one point or another.

Ambrós was born the middle child of Arlen and Adelaide Whelan. For some time his childhood was normal, at least for back then. It wasn't until he and his siblings got a bit older that things really started to change. Breasal developed a jealousy of Aodh being the heir just because he was the eldest son. He did his best to diffuse his brother's anger, but it seemed that the harder he tried, the angrier the boy got with him. He would not know the true extent of his brother's anger until a few years later.
When Ambrós turned twelve, his mother passed away. Barely a year later, his father married a woman who used to treat him like he was a prince. The woman was incapable of having her own children, and he truly believed that she loved him. His siblings did not have the same experiences with her. They claimed she was a vile woman, but he wrote it off as his little brother's jealousy. He even managed to convince himself that his sister had just begun to side with Breas. He did this because his step mother always seemed to side with him when his brother would throw his jealousy fits.
However, the day finally came when he got to see his step mother's true colors. It started off small. She yelled at Etain for something that was not her fault. But then it got worse. One day he noticed that his little brother was being whipped, and when he demanded to know why, no one could give him a sufficient answer. Not even his step mother. He confronted his father, but Arlen Whelan was a changed man. He spent far too much time in his cups to know; or care, what went on in his estate or family. That was when Aohd knew he had to do something, but what could a fourteen year old boy do? He decided to send word to his uncle, Cahan O'Halloran.
When Evelyn learned what he was doing, she became enraged. The woman attacked him with a sword, running it through his stomach and out his back. He thought for sure that his life was over. "Finally got what you deserve, I see," his little brother's words echoed in his head as he spat on him. He was left for dead by the whole of his family, and Breas even helped to transport his body into the woods. If it had not been for an old woman passing through he surely would have died. The woman managed to save his life, and for that he declared himself in her debt.
He spent a good few years traveling with the woman, for she had many things to teach him. Through her he learned archery, herbal remedies, and how to fight with two blades. With time; and much patience, she also taught him to trust again, but to heed the warnings from others at the same time. She was a grandmotherly figure to him, and he spent a lot of time "defending" her against the insults that people slung at her. Which meant she spent just as much time trying to get him passed the hotheadedness of his youth.
When she passed, it broke his heart in a way he hadn't known possible. With her death came a huge hole in his life that never seemed able to be filled. Eventually he took up bounty hunting to get himself out of the forest, and hopefully passed Eibhilín's death. He proved to be an excellent bounty hunter, but killing for a living took its toll on him. When he hit about 20 years old, he was captured by the men of one of his past bounties. He was thrown in a prison that was barely more than a hole in the ground. Dead silence and absolute darkness surrounded him. That was bad enough, but the other tortures were worse. He got just enough food to sustain his life once a week, and was beat on a daily basis.
It took several months for him to formulate an escape plan, but he finally came up with something. They would throw the food down to him once a week, and so he would dig a hole in the dirt floor of his one man prison to stash it away. Eventually he had enough to build up his strength over several days. When they came to get him for his daily round of torture one day, he managed to take them by surprise, and disarmed one. With the stolen sword he killed off both of his guards and managed to escape. Imagine his surprise; however, when he found himself face to face with his step mother.
"I thought I killed you years ago." Those words ring in his head to this day. "It takes a better woman than you to kill me." Had been his retort. Probably not the smartest thing he could have said. The fight was on from there. She was in better shape than him, but he had the upper hand with proper sword training. It didn't take long for him to win the fight, but he refused to kill her. He abhorred people who killed women and children, and would not become the thing he hated most. He let her live, and gained his freedom.
He spent the next year traveling, and mostly avoiding large towns and cities. So it was that he came upon a young woman who was severely injured in the forest; much the same way he had once been. He took her in and tended her wounds as Eibhilín had taught him once upon a time. The woman was grateful for his help, and turned out to be a "forest dweller" like him. They agreed to travel together, and eventually wound up in love. Shortly after their first night "together" she came to him with news of her pregnancy. He was over joyed, but also terrified. After much consideration, they decided to take up residence in a small town nearby. Fighting was all he knew as a way to make money, and soon he returned to his bounty hunting ways.
For a time, all was right with the world. She would sooth his conscience over taking another person's life, and he would provide for her. It seemed his life was finally going right. He had a woman who loved him, a roof over his head, and would soon be a father. Given the harshness of his past, he could hardly ask for a better present, and was delighted when they finally got the money and time to get married shortly before she was due to give birth to their child.
However, as seems to be typical of his life, things took a turn for the worst. Once again he found himself facing men of someone who he had collected a bounty on. Only this time was much worse than the last. This time he had a pregnant wife who was about to pop. And they used that against him. They managed to confine him and raped his wife several time in front of him before they killed her, driving a sword through her stomach to make sure the unborn infant would die as well.
A rage and hurt so powerful that he managed to escape his confines consumed him. Despite his much smaller stature he managed to attack and kill each of the men, leaving behind a bloody mess as he escaped back into the forest. His broken heart kept him from really living over the next several years. Until word reached him that those men who killed his wife and unborn child had not actually been men of someone who he had collected a bounty on. They had been men sent to track him down and find him by his step mother. She had ordered them to cause him as much damage as possible.
At that point he'd had enough. He was so tired of being broken by his family that he made his way back to his father's estate. He honestly expected Arlen Whelan to have died from the drink years ago, but it seemed that the man was still alive and well. He even tried to greet Aodh as a son, but he wasn't about to have any of that. Especially not when he learned from Breas that Arlen had learned of Evelyn's intentions and had done nothing to stop her; claiming that she was no longer his responsibility since he had managed to get a divorce from her a few years ago. That turned into a screaming match between Aodh and his father. He screamed at him that she had killed his wife and unborn child. That woman had completely destroyed his life, even after trying to kill him more than once. Arlen tried to calm him down, but he wasn't having any of it. His rage took hold and all he saw was red as he attacked both his father and younger brother. He came away pretty wounded himself, but they were both dead. And it was then that he did something he swore he would never do. He put a bounty on his step mother's head. All he wanted was peace, but with his father's death he was forced to step in as the Earl of Chastershire.
