Nessa is outgoing and goofy by nature. She enjoys doing things just for the sake of seeing people's reactions to them. To her young mind; life should be about having fun. And what's more fun than shocking other people? She adores animals, and is actually rather girly. Which begs the question of why she wants to be a squire. The reason behind this, however, is mostly because Abaigael went and married another woman and became a queen. So if Abi can do something as outrageous as that, she can darn well be a squire! She feels like a bit of an outcast among her family, despite their best attempts to hide their feelings towards her. Perhaps this plays a big part in her wanting to become a squire. It certainly plays a part in her kind of not minding the fact that she's being sent to the northern kingdom to become a squire. Maybe she can at least forge her own identity if she's away from her family.

Nessa was born the youngest daughter and child of Braden and Cassidy O’Hara; merely minutes after her twin brother had been born and pronounced dead. She was born a healthy bundle of joy, and her parents resented her for it, though they knew that it was bad they still had the thought that somehow if it wasn’t for her that their baby boy would have come into the world filled with life and vigor. Her siblings all fed off of their parents’ ill-emotions towards her, and it wasn’t long at all before there developed a distance between Nessa and her family. Honestly, if it hadn’t been for a wet nurse the girl might have died shortly after her brother; her mother went into what would nowadays be called postpartum depression, and couldn’t care for the child. As she grew and developed it remained the wet nurse who looked after her and cared for her, though soon enough the woman also passed away leaving Nessa alone as the black sheep of the O’Hara family. Even family friends and neighbors noticed the distance between the girl and her family; as the youngest it should’ve been her that was spoiled and treated like a princess, but she was cast aside like an old rag doll though nobody could quite understand why.
As she grew older she depended on socialization through her tutors and such, and clung to the individuals like glue; she did anything and everything to make them happy, and even took on the hobbies that they had expressed that she should like (like decorating, dancing, and caring for animals). Honestly, she was molded into what might be considered the perfect lady; she enjoyed making tapestries and wearing dresses, though there was a downside as she noticed that she was the outcast of her family and occasionally acted out because of it. When she was fifteen and learned of her sister’s marriage to the Queen of the South she grew rather irritated with it all, and expressed the unfairness to her parents. She knew that Abi had been their favorite, and demanded that if her sister was able to do what she wanted then she should be allowed to as well. Unfortunately, the only outrageous thing she could think of was to become a Knight, and that was the first thing that tumbled out of her mouth (“If Abi can marry a woman then I can become a Knight!). Despite her parents being shocked by the idea, and honestly rather angry because she would shame their family, after a while they caved and allowed her to go become a squire. They had realized that her leaving would help them feel less guilty about the feelings that they harbored towards her, despite the fact that they knew she would further shame their family.
