Aeden had an early breakfast this morning, and was now at the training arena, waiting for the new squires. While they typically trained under one specific knight each; they would occasionally train together under one or two of the knights together. And today happened to be one of those days. Today the squires would be pushed to train with mock weapons that were outside of their usual comfort zone. This was one of his favorite parts of training squires, but mostly because he usually got to jump into the fray to correct usage of the mock weapons and occasionally demonstrate how certain moves should be executed. He was pretty proficient with the mock weapons, just as he was with most of the real things. He stood at one end of the arena with his arms behind his back as he waited for the squires to show up and shuffle in. It was relatively early, so he expected there to be a lot of grumbling about the hour, if nothing else. A smirk curved one corner of his mouth as he remembered both his own grumbling when he'd become a squire, and the grumbling of his nephew when the boy had become a squire.

Nessa walked daintily towards the training arena, twirling the stem of a flower between her fingers. She had been avoiding meeting the knight that she was going to squire under, though now she figured that she might as well get it over with. She had thought that she might come up with a way to dignify her going back on her decision to become a knight, but she couldn’t think of a reason and had decided that it was about time that she met with the man. She had received word that he would be in the training arena with other squires today, and had gone there. As she moved towards the area she saw a knight standing at one end of the arena and immediately knew that he was Aeden McCoy; he’d been described thoroughly by so many ladies that it would be difficult not to recognize him. She would put on her best smile before dancing towards him, her eyes wide and hopeful as she considered the fact that he might just go easy on her, “Aeden McCoy?” she would ask, blinking up at him. When he assured her that it was him she would beam up at him before speaking, “I’m Nessa O’Hara, I believe that my parents have arranged for me to squire under you,” she would say with a nod, still twirling the flower in her fingers. At least she wasn’t wearing a dress, nope, she was wearing a billowy white shirt and tight britches; obviously girly, but something that she might be able to train in.

He watched squires start to shuffle into the training arena, and his head cocked to the side and tilted downwards when a particularly tiny little girl approached him and asked if he was Aeden McCoy. He nodded, expecting her to say that she had been sent by someone to ask something of him or bring him some word. So when she went on to say that she was the squire he'd been set up with by a pair of southern nobles he starred at her incredulously. I mean. He knew he shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but damn. She was a beensie little thing, twirling a flower between her fingers, and dressed in clothes that were entirely too girly for this sort of thing. It was all he could do to repress a groan and keep from closing his eyes to pray to the gods that she was full of more fight than she looked capable of holding. Instead he responded with a "Nice to meet you, Lady O'Hara. Please stand with the other squires, and I will begin the training session momentarily," in his best civil tone. When she went to stand with the other squires he addressed them all at once. "Welcome, squires. I am Aeden McCoy, and I will learn your names all in time. For right now, though, I must give you an introduction to today's session. Today you will all be sparring with mock weapons. Mock so that no one gets seriously injured before you learn how to properly handle weapons. Remember that while these might not kill as easily as a real weapon they can still be used with deadly force, and they can cause a lot of pain. You will all be allowed to choose which mock weapon you will use, but if you have experience with any weapons already, we encourage you to step outside of your comfort zones. I will be here to demonstrate proper maneuvers and correct anyone who thinks just swinging a sword or ax about willy nilly is the way to doe this."

When he directed her to go stand with the squires she would blink, letting her gaze drift towards the other boys before immediately flicking it back towards him, reaching out to grasp his shirt only to drop her hand. “But, sire…” she would say, fear dancing through her eyes as she stares up at him, “I don’t know…” she would start only to shake her head slightly and move to stand with the much bigger individuals that she was supposed to train with. She stood just a bit away from them, and could feel a sort of hatred emanating from them; she was different and not many people liked different. When Aeden began to speak about how they would train today she immediately knew that it had been the wrong day for her to seek him out. She would stare at him for a moment, dropping the flower that she had been holding out of shock. She didn’t even know the first thing about weapons, and he was expecting her to just pick one up and start training with it? She would poke out her bottom lip, a pout developing on her face as she just continues to look at him, not even realizing that she was giving him such a pathetic look. When he finished speaking and the other boys moved off to pick out their weapons she would flit over to her mentor, coming up beside him and reaching out to gently tug on his shirt to get his attention, “Sire…I don’t know…” she would start, staring up at him with wide eyes, “I’m not familiar with weapons…”

He noticed the looks that the other squires cast her way, but there really wasn't much he could do about it right then. So he continued addressing the squires until they all stepped forwards to choose their weapons. Except for the little girl named Nessa. She walked up to him and tugged on his shirt to get his attention and he looked down at her expectantly. When she said she wasn't familiar with weapons he held back a grimace, but nodded. "It's alright," he said in his best tone of reassurance. "I can help you. It's what I'm here for," he said with an awkward smile. He titled his head to the side and walked her over to where the mock weapons rested. "We'd better find something that's light enough for you to handle the real thing when the time comes. The heavier your weapons and armor are, the harder strain they will put on you when you fight. And as a potential knight there will be times when you have to fight for very long periods of time, so you need to make sure your weapons and armor aren't adding too much to the strain," he explained carefully. He bent down and picked up a mock short sword that he handed to her. "How does it feel? Is it too heavy?"

Nessa couldn’t help but smile when he said that he could help her, “Thank you,” she would respond instantly, following him over to the weapons rack. She would listen quietly as he spoke about finding the right weapon and why it was important, trying to make some mental notes on it. “If we need to be sure that we won’t struggle under armor, then why aren’t we training in it?” she would ask quietly, not trying to be rude; she was merely curious and her inquisitive tone proved that to be true. When he bent down and grabbed a short sword she would blink at it, trying to figure out how she was supposed to hold it when he handed it to her. She would take it nonetheless, and held it awkwardly away from her body, “It’s not that heavy,” she would murmur, “But…it feels weird,” she would comment, staring at her hand. Honestly, any weapon he handed her would feel weird because she had never held a weapon before, so it wasn’t something that he should be concerned with, though he might want to check her grip; the way she was holding it she was likely to drop it before she’d even hit something with it.

He nodded to her thanks, though frowned at her question. "Good point, but that's something that we'll be doing later on. Since this is only the first of many training sessions to come, we want to perfect your skills with weapons before we add the weight of armor," he said with a shrug. He tried not to cringe at the way he saw her take the sword. Instead of commenting on it, though, he reached over and corrected her grip automatically. "You don't ever want to hold a sword so loosely," he said. "Not if you don't want to drop it and cut your toes off, anyway," he said with a soft chuckle. "Also. Any weapon you handle is going to feel weird due to your inexperience with them. However, don't feel too bad about it. It might take a little while to get used to it, but by the time you've been training for a while, your weapon will start to feel like an extension of your own arm," he assured her with a smile. "Most people who are as new to this as you are say the same thing that you just did," he said with a laugh.

She would listen quietly to his answer, nodding lightly when he finished explaining, "It makes sense," she would say with a smile, though she figured that she might begin to wear some sort of armor more often. Maybe she'd go running with it on or something; if she was really going to do this then she might as well give it her all. When he fixed her grip and explained why she would nod, though she found his reasoning to be rather silly, "I think squires would be more motivated if you used a different outcome. Like...'you don't want to drop your sword in battle and have your neck slit open for it'," she would say sweetly, not in any way trying to give him sass or mock him or anything. She just figured that it would work better; threatening toe severance just sounded silly. When he spoke about the weapon feeling weird she would smile and nod, "Makes sense!" she would practically chirp, now rather enthusiastic. "So, what do I do with it?" she would ask with a grin, figuring that it was the next logical question.

He chuckled at her comment about motivation and shook his head slightly. "I was more motivating you for the here and now, not the possible in the future," he said with a grin and a shake of his head. She was definitely something else. "But, yes, good point again. Keep your suggestion in mind," he said with a laugh. He definitely liked her enthusiasm in this. "Well. You defend yourself from attackers, or you become the attacker," he said with a chuckle. "Here, let me start you off with a few practice maneuvers so that you can get a feel for the weapon before you try to go up against someone whose actually used a weapon before," he said gently. In doing so he bent over to pick up another mock short sword. It was a bit light and short for someone of his size, but he wanted to demonstrate how she should use the weapon that she would be using. "Follow me," he said as he made his way over a few paces towards a wooden pole that was in almost the center of the arena. The pole had a lot of dings in it from people using it as a training post. "I'll slow down my movements so that you can see better," he said as he swung the short sword at the pole in slow motion, hitting it against the post a few different ways. "Now do what I just showed you," he said as he took a step back. "Remember to keep a firm grip on the sword. You don't want it flying out of your hands and skewering the person who just saved your ass in battle," he teased gently. He was prepared to watch her and correct any mistakes that she made, though he did have to occasionally glance over his shoulder to watch the other squires, too. Actually. He hailed one of the servants on the other side of the arena and ordered the man to have another knight brought in. In a low tone, low enough that Nessa wouldn't be able to hear, he explained that they had a squire who had never been around weapons before. The man nodded and scurried off to go fetch one of the other knights. "Hey! The point is to not gouge each other's eyes out," he shouted at one of the other squires before he turned back to Nessa. "Go ahead and practice what I just showed you a few times. I need to go correct bad behavior before it turns into someone getting themselves seriously hurt," he said as he darted off across the arena to begin correcting some of the other squires.

When he said that he was motivating her for the here and now she would shake her head, “But, I’m working towards the future. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if something happened because I didn’t train properly, or take your advice. I’d like to know what could possibly happen if I screw up; it’ll make sure that I don’t,” she would say with a shrug, turning her attention back to the short sword. When he moved to show her some practice moves she would follow after him, watching him closely as he moved, everything from the way he was standing to how he moved the sword. Even moving slowly it looked as if the weapon belonged in his hands, and she hoped that one day she could say the same about herself. When he told her to do what he’d just showed her she would smile and nod, though when he told her to hold it tightly because she didn’t want it to fly out of her hand and skewer the man that had just saved her ass in battle she would blink, though a wide grin would develop on her face. She knew then that training under this knight would be a good thing, and would move to try to mimic what he’d showed her. She didn’t do all that badly; she’d always been a good pupil and honestly kind of ignored him when he spoke to the servant. She didn’t even hear him tell her to continue practicing those moves; she was doing it anyways. Though, after successfully completing them all in row she would turn to beam at Aeden, only to realize that he was no longer watching. She would frown a bit and glance around, trying to pick out where he might be though she didn’t have very much luck; she was too short to see over the heads of some of these other squires, and it was rather pointless to try. So, she would turn back to the practicing post and repeat the moves over and over again, trying to do one and flow directly into the next until she didn’t even have to think about it anymore.

He'd smiled at her words before the distraction had come in the form of him needing to act like a teacher to more than just one squire. He had quickly corrected the bad behavior among the other squires, and by that time another knight who was used to helping with these sorts of things had arrived. He instructed the other man to stay with the group of squires while he went over to check on Nessa. A smile tugged at his lips as he watched her execute the moves that he'd shown her, and with each time she seemed to grow more fluid in her movements, and more capable of performing them properly. "Good. Keep it up and you'll be the best squire in this group in no time," he said with another smile. Aeden had never been the type who was afraid to praise his students; especially not when they surprised him with their abilities. He stepped in and picked up the short sword that he had been using earlier. "Now that you have the basic maneuvers for the offensive, you need to learn those for the defensive," he said. "Slowly, I want you to come towards me and use those moves in an attempt to attack. Slowly so that you can watch how I counter them."

He startled her when he spoke and she would jump, dropping the sword rather awkwardly as she turns to look at him. “Oh jeeze,” she would huff, shaking her head though a sheepish smile had collected on her lips. When he moved to pick up his own short sword she would stoop down to retrieve hers, shaking her head again when she straightened. She’d been so focused on her actions that she hadn’t even realized that he’d come walking back up to where she was training, honestly she’d figured that he was just going to leave her to do that for awhile. Though, when he informed her that she would need to learn defensive moves, and then instructed her to come slowly towards him and use the moves that she’d already been taught she would nod uncertainly, not quite sure if this was really the best idea. However, she would do it anyways, moving slowly just as he had instructed and watching him closely; she wanted to watch every single move he made. It would help her to fully be able to understand what movements she was suppose to make; she knew that when dancing a simple foot out of place could be a disaster when trying to learn, so she figured that this would be the same way.

He'd frowned when he'd startled her into dropping her sword. "And that's why I said you need to keep a firm grasp on your sword," he'd said gently. Though he did feel kind of bad for scaring her. If he'd known about her analogy of dancing to sword fighting he probably would have cringed inwardly, but agreed outwardly. While he might not like the analogy, it was pretty accurate. When she took up her sword he gave her a brief nod and smiled faintly as she started on the offensive. He went slowly through the motions of defensive moves so that she would be able to see everything that he did. "Some people say that a good offense is the best defense," he said as he moved his sword to parry hers carefully. "And if you're smart with your defense you can use it offensively in a way that the enemy will never see coming," he elaborated as they finished. He encouraged her to attack again. "And, not to be mean, but you're going to need to be smart with your defense with your size. Chances are most of the people who you will fight against will be much larger than you are. But don't let that get to you. I've watched men half my size take down men that were twice my size," he said with a chuckle. "It's all about focusing on getting around your opponent's defenses. Once you get the basics down, it will be easier to see where your opponent is flawed. What they're trying to compensate for. And once you can spot that; the way to use their flaws to your advantage usually just comes to you," he assured her.

She would listen when he spoke about some people saying that a good offense is the best defense, only to go on to say that if she was smart that she could use her defense in an offensive way. Logically, what he was saying made sense, though she wasn’t quite sure how she might accomplish that. She would shrug when he spoke about her size, “I know that I’m small, and that almost anybody who got their hands on me could probably break my in half,” she would say honestly. She didn’t hide from the truth; hiding only made things worse. “So, how do I use my flaws as an advantage?” she would ask, wondering how she was supposed to use being small in a good way. She couldn’t really think of any way that she could, besides the fact that she might be faster than most, though she figured that if anybody could come up with a way for her to do so it would be him. When he encouraged her to attack again she would do what he wanted, though she would move faster this time, and instead of just attacking in the same order as the moves that he had showed her she would shuffle them. She had a feeling that her biggest goal being his squire would be to just land a blow on him, not to hurt him but to show that she was capable.

He smiled when she questioned him. It made him feel a lot better that she was aware of her small stature and that she was smart enough to ask questions. Maybe she wouldn't be as hopeless as he had feared at first. "I've found that, typically, people who are bigger like to think that they have to use bigger weapons. Which means that they have that much more slowing them down. Your slight build, so long as you do not over burden yourself with weapons and armor, will be to your advantage against those kinds of people," he said as he parried her blows with ease. "You will be able to move faster than they do, and the chances of you getting at their weak spots will be much greater than someone who is larger than you," he continued to explain. He was impressed that she would switch things up so quickly and actually manage to pull it off. It told him that she was a good study. "One thing that many people don't think about is the underside of the arm below the shoulder. It's not easy to form armor for awkward areas of the body. And it might not seem like much of a weak spot, but I've seen some of the best soldiers taken down with a sword to the under arm," he said with a smile. "Alright," he said as he parried her most recent blow. "Time for you to try the basics of defensive moves."
